Leaning Into Fall

Everlane silk shirt, NYDJ jeans, Givenchy bag, leopard pumps

Fall has always been my favorite style season. But in Southern California, we really don’t see the kind of typical fall weather that has us reaching for sweaters, boots and jackets until mid to late November, so I’ve had to learn to Get My Fall On in other ways. A lightweight silk shirt in a yammy color will do nicely. I love pairing earthy tones like this with charcoal grey.

Shirt: Everlane from last season, same style, similar color // Tank: Eileen Fisher, similar // Jeans: NYDJ // Bag: Givenchy // Shoes: Cole Haan

What’s your favorite style season? Do you have to find ways to accommodate a climate that isn’t always in sync seasonally?

  1. My favourite season is fall as well….and even though we have a “typical” fall in Ontario…September is usually too warm for fall clothes. I shop now but don’t normally switch up my closet until after Thanksgiving ( early October, here.)
Love that “yammy” colour….and really like that word. Me… I’m looking for tops in “jammy” colours….the colour of raspberry jam:)

    1. Those are very lovely colours, and the “yammy” soft or burnt orange is a very common colour in central Italy, in particular in Rome where so many buildings are that hue. Makes me dream of Italy, and the aroma of wonderful coffee in “bars” early in the morning.

I can no longer wear stiletto heels at all, even if they are as small as yours (My favourite shoes have heels that are probably the same height, but sturdy German urban walking shoes). Arthritis. But then I also walk a lot, when I’m not cycling.

        1. There is a caffè in the neighbourhood where Duchesse and I live, where the coffee is actually comparable: Caffè San Simeon. What’s more, it’s not at all pricy or posh.
http://www.caffesansimeon.com/ http://zurbaines.com/fr/meilleurs-cafes-patisseries-montreal/san-simeon-petite-italie/ Yes, it opens at 6 a.m., and Caffè Italia opens even earlier, and there are builders, police officers etc. there before their shift.

          Still, I miss Italy terribly.

  2. What a beautiful way to ease I to Fall. That is such a gorgeous colour on those heels are stunning! Winter is my favourite season. I love the layering the textures, the out wear … I could go on:)

    1. I presume you don’t live anywhere with winters as cold as ours, especially the last one (Montréal)! I was very seriously depressed from not being able to go for long walks, as I simply couldn’t breathe. Though it was unusual; normally I walk for at least an hour if I don’t have a huge rush of work. I do like autumn though; people look so chic!

  3. Thanks for recommending that CC cream with sunscreen. I got it from Ulta and love it! The first one I’ve found in a shade that matches my skin tone and the consistency is wonderful.

  4. I love Fall most of all, but it definitely means something else here in MN. It will be 80 today, but it could be 60 next week, and already there is more of a need for layers, with cool mornings most days now. But the glory of fall on the northern Mississippi…I could never give it up!

  5. Living in Texas, I do have to adapt a fall look for very warm weather. I do it with cotton sweaters–and some of them have short sleeves.

  6. Beautiful way to transition to cooler weather (what is “cooler weather”?) The skirt is a wonderful shape and color and you look fab. Thanks for sharing with Visible Monday.

  7. In British Columbia, September is usually a sunny dry month with cooler temperatures. A light jacket or sweater coat will be warm enough. How do the Everlane blouses fit? Are they cut well enough to avoid pulling buttons across the bust? On the other hand, with the shell underneath, it’s not a problem. I really like the blouse.

  8. We moved to Montecito from Carmel last year, and I was amazed at how mild the winters are. I have a closet full of cold weather items I never got to wear ! Thank you for inspiring me about what to wear in cooler months. I too love to dress for fall.

  9. Gorgeous colour! I won’t really be able to get the sweaters out for another month — September is usually still quite warm during the day, and the building I teach in is south-facing AND non-air-conditione AND has all windows closed at night for security. A true heat trap!
I notice that you’ve featured heels in quite a few outfits recently. Are you wearing them pretty regularly? My own have been languishing, at least through the summer. . . .

    1. Frances, I find I’m liking the look of heels these days, but do alternate every other day with a very low heel or flat. And “heels” for me is usually 2.5″, 3″ max (and those only on days I know I won’t have to do a lot of walking).

      1. They do look good on you! I’ll probably get back to wearing them perhaps twice a week, once I’m back on campus every day.Like you, mine are 3″ or under, so quite manageable, depending what the day holds. I’m so glad there are so many wonderful flat options these days.

        1. Materfamilias and pseu, I almost died of the heat at Université de Montréal during the wintertime. Those windows that don’t open, and central heating. Often I had to wear a little t-shirt under a woollen sweater (and all the other winter clothing) because it was so bloody hot, and usually I was studying in the early evening, after a day at work (in an office that wasn’t nearly as overheated). My thesis adviser was Sicilian, but had taught in Moscow (colder than here, more like Winnipeg) and said it was even worse there.

It is lovely and warm here right now, though the sun is already on the wane. I’m sipping some white wine cut with Ferrarelle mineral water and eating peaches. Right now, life is good!

  10. I’ve come to realize my beloved Fall/Winter clothes have a very short season in Southern California–usually Nov.-Feb, but I’ve adopted your strategy by wearing light weight Fall colors. You look wonderful and I can’t wait to make that transition soon. It seems Fall is a favorite among most of us.

  11. Here in the North of England we will be swapping out T-shirts for sweaters in a month. I love the feel of cashmere/merino after cotton. Lovely and cosey. Away go the white jeans for daytime out come the jackets and sweater dresses. Sandals cleaned, wrapped in tissue and put away. Boots recleaned and ready to wear. Pity about the rain though!!!

  12. Beautiful color palate, Susan. I have a question for you that I am hoping you can answer when you get a chance. I know you own Equipment silk blouses – how do these Everlane blouses measure up on quality and fit? I am particularly interested in length (sleeve and bodice) and how roomy they are in the bust area. Equipment blouses fit me very well…looking for an “on a budget” option. The Everlane prices are much more reasonable.

    1. Adrienne, I wanted to examine both shirts together closely before replying. I’m comparing the Everlane shirt to the Equipment “Slim Signature” style. The Equipment is definitely longer. I think the quality of construction on the Everlane is comparable to the Equipment shirt. The silk fabric on the Everlane is slightly heavier and less “slippery” than the Equipment. I think the Everlane shirt is definitely a beautiful piece and a very good value.

  13. As another commenter said, “what is cooler weather?” It’s supposed to hit 100 today here in TX. So for me, Fall dressing mainly involves wearing darker colored shorts! I love the look of white jeans, but that doesn’t really work here. It’s too hot to wear jeans in the summer, and when the weather cools off even slightly, that’s well past Labor Day. Sigh. Flowy white linen pants, on the other hand, are great!

I do love Fall/Winter clothes though! Hope I can wear them by November 😉

  14. ————————————- You look great but PLEASE lets not rush fall! We barely have had a summer here in the midwest — its not FALL, its August, which is always summer!!

  15. You’ve never looked better. Every piece in your composition shines, as do you. Loving your hair and everything about your photos!

  16. I love Fall, but it’s been in the high 90’s here in Nashville and we don’t get cooler weather much sooner than you do. I’m taking the initiative and shopping for cold weather clothes that fit and flatter, which can be a tall order for someone as short as me. I love that shirt, especially paired with those pumps!

  17. I love this look, so simple and timeless. I’m struggling with thinking of fall when it’s 100 degrees here in the Southeast. I’m leaving in two weeks for two weeks in Paris and Barcelona and am narrowing down my travel clothes choices. We’ll be mostly sightseeing, so on our feet most of every day. This look is perfect and one I may copy on my trip… I’ve read and re-read your packing tips for October and April timeframes, but fear I’m planning to take items that are suited to cooler weather than we may experience. If you were going to “lighten up” your 12-piece travel wardrobe (from a temperature perspective), how would you change it?

  18. Same here, but it gets colder fast after that. Yammy! Of course. Brilliant with charcoal … less Halloweenie and more fall-like. I’m liking that with navy this time around, too. Pretty you, as always.

  19. Oh, yes, I like that feminine float of a shirt and the soft open collar giving definition to the shoulder line. And your earrings are a splendid touch, and subtly suggest fall to me as well!

  20. Fall is a challenge in Los Angeles for fashion lovers. We drool over all the new coats and sweaters but really don’t need them unless we are travelers.

It is so weird here in Australia–they are getting ready for spring fashion! Hard to fathom….

  21. Yes, sometimes the best we can do is wear fall colors. Last year it stayed summer pretty much the entire year. This cognac color looks great on you and yes to classic leopard pumps.

  22. After our miserable summer weather, I am not looking forward to autumn and winter at all. I think I should live in Southern California, that is definitely my climate!
The cognac cardigan is lovely, I have seen that colour in the shops and of course I always love leopard.

  23. Beautiful! I used to have shoes similar to yours. Oh how I miss wearing high heels. Thank you for sharing at the Thursday Favorite Things blog hop. Watch for your feature on Monday! xo

  24. I like this outfit. The shirt is flowing nicely and I’ve been wanting skinnies in grey for the longest time.

Here September is still too warm for what you’d consider a fall outfit, but I could start to pull out lightweight jackets for early morning and evening hours. Sleeveless is still okay for mid day. Tights are still a bit too much. I don’t mind. Winter is ugly here.
