shopping in Paris: Ines de la Fressange

That’s Hélène, the manager, who was as sweet and helpful as could be.

Our timing was very good for visiting the recently opened Ines de la Fressange boutique, at 24 rue de Grenelle in Paris’ left bank shopping epicenter. The crowds that we’d heard had jammed the smallish space a few days before had thinned, and when we showed up a few minutes after the store had opened, we had the place mostly to ourselves. The staff was very welcoming and gracious, and responded “yes, of course!” when I asked if I could take some pictures. They also made sure I had the correct hashtag, #inesshop . 😉

More than a clothing shop, this store fits into that category of “lifestyle boutique,” and feels like a very personal reflection of Ines de la Fressange’s style and aesthetic. Wit? Charm? Personal branding? In spades!

I was quite taken with this bag initially…

The clothing wasn’t really my style, but I can certainly see the appeal, as it captures much of Ines’ “tomboy chic” look.

The clothing, bags and shoes aren’t inexpensive, but seem to be very well made. But there are also items for home, stationary, gifts and even toys, all with that Ines de la Fressange touch and in all price ranges…

And purchases go home in this roomy (and re-useable) cloth shopping bag! Yes, that red bucket bag was too much to resist.

Ines de la Fressange Paris at 24 rue de Grenelle is definitely worth a visit, but be warned, you will be charmed and may not leave empty-handed!

  1. Your husband has a good eye! I think the bucket bag fits your aesthetic more than the rectangular bag. Thank you for sharing these photos!

  2. Not Ines’ first time to this party; she had a clothing line maybe 10-12 yrs ago. Well-designed, preppy, extremely narrow cut clothes. Bombed in North America. I really like that blue plaid dress.

    1. Duchesse, the clothing mostly was not my style, and I assumed as with her Uniqlo pieces that the lines would be too tall and narrow for me. But all very much reflective of her look, and very cute. It will be interesting to see how it does.

  3. Like Duchesse, I love that blue plaid dress, but like you, I suspect that it would suit someone tall and slim rather than someone of my short and short-waisted shape. I’ll definitely be checking the shop out this fall. Thanks for the preview!

  4. Thanks for showing us round . That plaid dress is a little too much like my school uniform from ******* years ago though

  5. I definitely like that “lodge pole pine” chair in the 7th photo down. I am a bit of a fan of “rustic” decor. The branches in that chair are thinner than what can usually be found in that style here in the states. It captures the “cabin by the lake” feel with out the bulk. The coffee table in the background is cool too.

  6. I want her to be my friend. My stylish friend, who could cook a good boeuf bourguignon when asked:). I’d love to see how you might integrate her brisk Gallic look into your LA asymmetrical:).

  7. Love the red bucket bag–Le Monsieur has good taste! What a great looking boutique. BTW your new haircut is great and very flattering! I agree with Duchesse: the clothing is retro (1950’s?) and would look ridiculous on me. It would suit a young slender 20-40 year old perhaps 😉

  8. I agree with the the ladies posting here. Cute, but not made for we femmes de. Love the bucket you took home! I’ll be in Paris next spring and will have the boutique on my list to visit.

  9. Love the blue dress too and can’t help but thinking about the “Villager” brand we wore in the fifties. I’d still wear it, even in my seventies, still find the preppie look appealing. I really am truly trying to get past it. Thanks to your posts I have ventured into Eileen Fisher as my replacement. I can’t wait to visit the shop in the fall!

  10. I thought, oh please tell us you purchased the red bucket bag, and then you did! It looks beautiful! I recently purchased a blueberry bucket bag and I love it too. Get compliments all the time and love that dash of color it adds to my outfits. Loving your European adventure stories and pics.

  11. bj May be your oldest reader(77) & may be only 2- generation reader as my daughter (53) enjoys your blog also. We love to discuss fashion and travel gear. Never check bags and we ‘repeat’ outfits often. Admire your wonderful writing skills and high energy level.

  12. I love that red bucket bag and I’m a fan of Ines’. You really know your “fashion” stuff… she’s a icon –not only in France. I’m planning a November trip to France– and will visit her store–Thanks for posting about it!!

  13. Based on my huge admiration for IDLF’s personal style, I’m kind of disappointed by what I can see online of the offerings of this boutique. A lot of the stuff looks busy and girly, which is not how she actually dresses. If you look at photos of her, she never wears dresses, skirts or heels yet I see a lot of offerings in those category, including sky-high heels – yuck. I think her personal look is quite tailored and very uniform, leaning towards neutral solids, usually if any pattern just a blouse under a solid blazer or trench, or a breezy scarf. Sadly (to my eye anyway) there seems to be a disconnect between her designs and her personal style (case in point: look at the way she is dressed on the home page of her boutique website). When she herself, with her iconic look, *is* the genesis of the brand, it surprises me that her product seems to convey “I wouldn’t wear this, but you should!”

The red bag is smashing though. 🙂

  14. Great red bag, good pick! I really love the grey sweater you were wearing. I did not see it included in your travel wardrobe. Was it? Or, did you purchase it while ther also? I could really use this color. Thanks!

    1. Hi Amelia, this was a lightweight sweater I purchased in Amsterdam while shopping with Greetje. It’s actually a sage green color. I’ll be posting more next week, but it’s a brand called Tony Cohen.

      1. I love that sweater and that colour. I’m glad you were able to find something in Amsterdam which wasn’t too long for you! They are so very tall: it is a great destination for stylish clothing for tall people.

    1. Greetje, sadly no. I couldn’t decide between a couple of styles, decided to sleep on it, and then we ran out of time and I couldn’t get back to the store before we left. She who hesitates…

  15. That red bag is beautiful. It is a great finishing touch to your outfit. I love how happy you look in the photo–isn’t it lovely when you find something you know looks great?
