shapes of fall at Eileen Fisher
As I mentioned on Instagram on Sunday, I had the pleasure of attending a fall fashion show at the Eileen Fisher store on Robertson Blvd. The silhouettes reflect the same shift toward long-over-long I’ve also noticed in collections from many other designers. The looks are soft and focused on drape and movement. (Afterward I had a “d’oh!” moment when I realized I should have captured some of these looks in videos to really show to best advantage.)
That jacket is a very thin, soft suede. So luxe and elegant! I really like the colors included in this fall collection, especially Passion Flower (a darker version of Marsala), Red Saffron (Bordeaux red) and Surplus (muted olive).
That poncho looked SO soft and cozy.
This coat is very soft and not the stiff boiled wool that I remember.
This sweater is really soft and light. Right before the show, I tried it on in the surplus color and it came home with me. It can be worn pulled forward a bit so the neckline isn’t quite so high as she’s wearing here. The tunic is a great layering piece, and this one has a slimmer fit and not a lot of volume (yes, I bought that one last month, and you’ll see it on the blog soon).
There were a couple more outfits shown, but the photos I took weren’t in focus. Those models moved pretty fast! One of the outfits included a midi pencil skirt, which has piqued my interest. I’ve ordered one in Petite and will give it a try.
After the fashion show, a makeup artist from Make Up For Ever was on hand to do some “touch ups” and light makeovers. Knowing she’d done the models’ makeup for the show, I wanted to know what the pretty lipstick was she’d used on both. It was this one: “N47.” She applied some and I loved the color, so picked up a tube on my way home.

I wonder if you have any thoughts or ideas concerning how — for those of us who are petite yet amply endowed at the bustline — to avoid the “figurehead-on-a-ship-under-full-sail” look when wearing some of these gorgeous and comfortable pieces? I’m thinking especially of the pullover tops and sweaters. The more tailored, button-front white shirt seems to be a better look for me — but maybe I’ve missed something. p.s. I already own several supportive, minimizer-type brassieres.
Hi Judith, I’ve learned to avoid pieces that have “cascading” front details or lots of gathering or volume. I also usually mix a longer, softer top with a narrower bottom (a look often referred to as “long over lean”) to keep things balanced. I’m really excited about this season’s styles as they’re cut with a little less volume than in recent years and there are some great “column of color” options. But I think tailored vs. fluid is also about your style expression and what kind of look you feel most comfortable with. (I happen to love movement in my clothing while a very stylish friend of mine prefers everything to be more crisp.)
Those outfits are lovely. That long lean look is great. Makes me want to experiment with some of my clothes to see if I can pull that off. Wish Eileen Fisher tops didn’t just look droopy and dowdy on me. I love them on you.
I would love to go to one of these shows. I just tried on several of these looks and loved them. But, how about the shoes. Have you worn them. They look so cool, but how is the comfort?
Pam, it really depends on the shoe. I tried those fabulous open-toe pumps with the curved vamp and they were too tight across my instep where the vamp closes. The “Bluff” wedge boots, OTOH, I find very comfortable. I have those “sneaker sandals” from earlier this year and find them to be Walk All Day comfortable.

I’ve been eyeballing that one but at around $650 or so I would want to be “wowed” by it! Since I don’t live near a store I am looking for any input! I also bought the surplus tunic and wore it yesterday—LOVE!
I have a closetful of Eileen Fisher items (dresses mostly) but continue to find that tops with any kind of volume at all make me look larger than I am. Yes–droopy and dowdy. They look great on the models, but not so great on me at all.

Entranced by the long over lean, and have adopted using your blog guidance, even a long, black/white, sheer kimono top and a silk, long, black, sheer EF piece (sale). The surplus color is gorgeous, and have invested in EF tencel pants as part of my fall/winter base garments. Boiled wool looks too hot, hot for southern California, but that poncho. Oh, my. I love these looks. Just bought a pair of EF jeans… however, I am sad she doesn’t use older models.
I love your articles, and am learning how to dress at last – I am 55! I have to make do with clothes I can find here in Australia, that are similar to the EF- but love yur tips for dressing stylish, and have to check in to your reports!!! is the red brick lipstick really bright? it does not look that bright on the models? Im sort of a rosey lipstick girl. -(I have decided at last) or a soft coral as I am blondish with fair – not ivory, with freckles, so find my “look” changes a bit.
peonyflower, thanks so much! If I had to describe the “tone” of the lipstick, I’d say it leans more natural/earthy (though again, not brown) than bright. I’ve been wearing this color non-stop this week and really love it.
I love the check print tunic, with the surplus sweater. I’m usually a size L in Eileen Fisher, but sometimes her sweaters are very large. Should I stick to a size L for both pieces, or could I get away with a medium for the sweater ?
Hi Agnes, I find that both of these pieces are less voluminous than some of her recent collections. Both fit me true-to-size, and I’d recommend going with your usual size.

Thank You for turning me on to Eileen Fisher. I am 55 and petite (5’2″). Being a size 4/6 I have struggled with department store clothes as they just don’t fit well and petite cuts always seem skimpy in the fit. My go to stores for years have been Banana Republic, J. Crew, Express. As my body has undergone the hormonal changes that occur at my age I find these brands are failing me as well as being on the edge of age appropriate at times.
When I saw your blog for Eileen Fisher I liked the look and was surprised to find she has a store in my local mall. (never noticed it before). I was skeptical of the fit, afraid it would be frumpy on me and took awhile to recover from the sticker shock. But once I tried on her basic black dress (the racer back was on sale) I was hooked! The combinations are endless with this dress as a wardrobe anchor and I have some pieces in my closet that I can already pair it with. Also got the boots which fit like a dream and go perfectly with EVERYTHING! AS a first time customer I received 15% off my entire order which also helped with the cost. I have decided to go with less this fall/winter in exchange for good quality pieces that will serve me well all season.
