making the best of it…

Eileen Fisher long silk shirt

As of yesterday, it seems (finally!) that we are getting a slight break in the heat. Can’t come soon enough for me! Actually what I’m most weary of is air-conditioning, that constant draught of cold air and hum of the compressor motor. Even with the thermostat set higher, it’s been running almost constantly the last few weeks. I’ll be grateful for some brisker evenings, when just throwing open doors and windows for an hour or two is enough to cool the house down.

That said, I’m still getting a lot of wear from my warm weather clothes. When I first tried on this long silk shirt, I knew I’d probably wear it most often like this, open as a light top layer.

long shirt: Eileen Fisher | tunic tank: Eileen Fisher | necklace: French Kande |
bracelets: Alexis Bittar (similar here and here) |
bag: Clare V. (similar) | jeans: AG (similar) | shoes: Eileen Fisher (similar)

Wore this out to dinner Saturday night. The previous Sunday during our “staycation” we’d wandered into Wally’s for a late brunch, and it was so good we decided to go back for dinner. Funny coincidence, one of the wines recommended by our waiter turned out to be from one of the wineries we visited during our stay in Bordeaux!

The wine, of course was amazing. 🙂  Here’s more good news about the health benefits of red wine.

Do you wear tunic-length shirts? How do you like to style them?

    1. Pam, “Great red wine will get you through any weather…” That’s my story and I’m sticking to it. 😉 Thank you!

  1. I love longer tops over slim jeans. And I love those nude sandals, Sue. We’re having the opposite weather up here. Yesterday, Hubby and I started our walk under threatening skies and finished in a snow squall. Home to a fire in the fireplace, a nice cup of tea, and a good book. I was longing for cooler weather in September … but not this! I can definitely wear my sweaters now….just have to wear them under my winter coat!

  2. MMMM… Yummy wine, now actually sitting with a glass of red. Funny thing is I live in Europe I discovered my favorite red is a Californian wine. Turning Leaf Zinfandel, right now I have a 2013, 2012 is also nice. It is better the next day, it has almost dare I say chocolate after taste. It is lovely on it’s own and is def for Autumn/winter.
To your outfit, I love love the pop of animal print, not too much, just enough. Somehow you found that great way to make jeans look elegant. I have lately started for the first time wearing a bold lip with simple makeup. I would love to see this on you with a red that falls in the soft orange side, (meaning not a blue red).
I always wear something over top. I usually wear a tank, 3 quarter sleeve knit, or fitted black turtle neck. In Netherlands the weather is crazy, you never know what will happen so I have to have layers. The top layer is usually a blazer or sweater, here in NL we have casual office and when I say casual, I mean casual. I am the fanciest dressed when wearing jeans and a blazer.

    1. Melissa, you might want to check the residual sugar level of that wine. It sounds as if it may be very high, as can be the case for California Zinfandels. The only Turning Leaf wine I see listed at our Québec wine and spirits monopoly (beer, cider and some wines are also sold in grocery stores and corner stores) has a high residual sugar level.

Yes, the Dutch can be very casual indeed…though some Dutch people are very stylish in the northern-European vein. Very blustery weather, like in Britain. Where do you live in the Netherlands? I love the photos in this blog by a MUCH younger woman, from Romania, who lives in Amsterdam, but her latest photos are from Utrecht: http://amsterdamming.com/

I’m very fond of the Netherlands.

      1. Hmmm never thought of the sugar content as when I say chocolate I mean the cocoa flavor but is by no means sweet. It is barely there. But I did figure it wasn’t a higher end wine because while it isn’t cheap here, I knew it was of the lesser variety back in the states.
I am no way a wine buff, just know if I like something and guess I am pretty good at picking them as friends usually defer to my choice of restaurants or wine, this coming from Europeans….
I actually favor red wines when there is a real hint of the oak quality. Unfortunately, I heard some wineries use oak flavoring.
I’ll check out her site, thanks.
Yes the weather is something here, planning to retire one day to the warmer countries, I not only like the weather better, but have more in common with the culture.
NL is small that is about as specific as I get, as this is internet afterall.
If your name says anything, I have been to Montreal 3 times and loved it! Although too cold for permanent living for my blood.

    2. Melissa, I have not tried that one, but yes, we have some fantastic wines here in California too. Regarding the “bold lip” I’ve actually been wearing a reddish color often, it’s Makeup Forever N47 which is a nice earthy red.

  3. Wow, you look beautiful! I love the way you pair your French Kande pieces with your outfit. Alas, FK is not in my budget currently but I love her pieces….
I know what you mean about air conditioning: having lived in Honolulu for the last year (and another 3 months!) I love it when the trades blow and we can open the windows for a soothing breeze. It’s been too hot for the last 4 months to do anything but non-stop air conditioning. You continue to inspire me. When I return to Sonoma County in late January I will be scrambling for my EF layers and raincoat!!

    1. sybes1, thank you so much! Le Monsieur talks about retiring to someplace with a “tropical” climate but I know he’d want to have a/c going all the time, and that would make me crazy. 🙂

    1. Frances, thank you. Oh my yes, the Bordeaux wines we tried were amazing (as were those from the Loire Valley, as were those from Provence…). I think we need to find a way to become professional wine tasters for our next careers!

  4. I love tunic length shirts (both wovens and knits) and tunic length sweaters, but for me, they need to be pullovers. I’ve become intolerant of long cardigans or unbuttoned shirts flapping out around me as I move through the day. Also, at 5’1″, open tops seem to be yet one more thing that makes me look wider than I am tall. I *wish* I could wear your look above, Sue–you have made jeans elegant. Beautiful.

    1. Linda, thank you! It’s funny, we each have our own “bugaboos” don’t we? I love the movement of this, but my friend Karen also hates movement in her clothing and says this would drive her crazy.

      1. Yes, we all sure have our internal “rules.” 🙂 One of the many reasons I love your blog is that you expand my thinking while still sharing my essential sensibility. I’ll bet others feel similarly. Thank you, Sue!

  5. I love the combination of the light, long shirt and the slim jeans! It gave me an idea for my dinner outfit later this week, so thank you 🙂 Here in Dubai we’re still waiting for that break in the heat… I can’t wait for it!!!!

    1. Minna, thank you. I can’t imagine dealing with the kind of heat you must experience in Dubai. That must be challenging to dress for!

  6. Hah! I have a similar top and wondered what I should do with it. I like how you repeated the spots on the bag with the circle designs of the bracket and carried it through with the round pearls. The pearls really dress the outfit up and your air of confidence carries everything off. I think it’s very French. I just have a hard time with the jeans. They look chic because of the ankle length but right now I don’t have a great bode like yours to wear them, but I’m working on it. You’re convincing me on the shoes. Brand please?

  7. I love long shirts or tunics over jeans or slim pants, or leggings. And I love long sweaters i.e. boyfriend sweaters. Especially for those of us who are “height challenged”, a tunic length shirt can add height in just the right way!

  8. This is such a lovely long tunic shirt. It must be because it is Eileen Fisher. There is something about it that oozes quality.
And I adore the necklace. Wouldn’t mind it myself. You see, that is the wretched thing with blogging…. you keep seeing things you like for yourself as well.
    Greetje

    1. Greetje, thank you very much! There’s just something about silk…and yes, I have the same struggle with seeing lovely things on others’ blogs!

    1. Alice, thank you! I keep hoping that it won’t get quite as warm, and that the nights will stay cool (which really helps!).

  9. Your look is so effortless and stylish – you look great. I love sassy leopard print against the simple white – genius! Thank you so much for sharing.
