ski resort wear

Well yes, I have Ski Trip on the brain at this point. I used to stress out about what to pack for a somewhat posh ski resort, but no more. Sure, there’s the Ostentatious Display contingent, but there’s no need to feel intimidated by those folks; they pull their ski boots on one at a time too. 🙂 As with everything else these days, the vibe off the slopes is mostly casual.

Yesterday Susan of High Heels In The Wilderness penned this great post about happiness and acknowledging those negative feelings that sometimes trip us up. This was timely for me, as even though I very much enjoy and look forward to travel, I find that right before we leave for a trip, along with the excitement I also experience strong waves of sadness or anxiety. I think some of it is just feeling overwhelmed by all of the preparations, and some guilt about leaving jeune homme and knowing how much I’ll miss him and our dogs. But just allowing those feelings to surface and acknowledging them releases the “charge” and they don’t overpower me.

I’ll share my ski trip packing list on Monday.

If you enjoyed my post about Crisp White Shirt alternatives (and it seems that many of you also struggle with this one…so glad to know I’m not alone!), next week I’ll have the second installment of “when must-have’s are no-go’s” featuring another “classic” item that doesn’t work for everyone.

And, I’ll have a fun giveaway launching in a few days, so stay tuned…

Bon weekend!

  1. I love what you wrote about letting your feelings surface, and accepting them – I too get anxious before a trip with the “what ifs”. Don’t let them crowd your mind, as Mark Twain said, “I’ve had a lot of worries in my life, most of which never happened.” xox

  2. Somehow it helps me to know you struggle with some travel anxiety…I struggle with MUCH travel anxiety which has worsened as I age. Thank you for admitting it…your confession might actually help me to get on the next plane! Have a wonderful time and, again, I appreciate the honesty…nice to know I am not alone.

  3. Oh… I feel that anxiety before a big trip too, Sue. Mixed with excitement. WRT to ski fashion…When we were still downhill skiing we stayed at one or two snazzy ski resorts. I was often bemused by the elaborate outfits, co-coordinating accessories, even matching lipstick donned for a day of outdoor activity. I’m all over earrings and make-up and mascara for most activities… but skiing…nope. Hope your trip is wonderful. I await your packing post. Winter sweaters and boots are so bulky and hard to pack. Unless you’re driving like we usually do…then all bets are off:)
Thanks so much for the mention and link. Much appreciated. 🙂

  4. That’s a lovely posting by Susan of High Heels. I too get travel anxiety–definitely worsened by age. I love that you’re going skiing! I’ve only tried cross country and never managed to go up and down those darned hills. So more power to you!! Have a great time.

  5. I think you should get as gussied up as you want for the slopes. Nothing wrong in attracting attention for being well put together, especially if it makes you glow and have a good time. Lipstick is always in order avant de, pendant and apres ski! I promise you will ski better, faster, stronger in a good lippie.

  6. I believe you said it was a couple of years since your last ski trip, and if so, I can confirm that those “posh” resorts have gotten even more casual since your last visit. My family and I had the good fortune of being in Vail over the MLK weekend, and with the exception of four, maybe five women we saw in the village (not on the slopes), everyone was dressed in very casual attire. We were fortunate enough to secure reservations at a couple of the top rated restaurants and my black EF ponte pants and tunic looked dressy compared to what some were wearing. I’m sure that whatever you pack will be just right. Can’t wait to see your choices.

  7. Thank you for discussing this. And, thank you Sandra for naming it. Those feelings started for me after the birth of my son and almost 4 decades later, are getting worse. I travel often and once the plane has taken off, I feel a sense of relief that I actually
got past my anxiety or fear and kept on moving forward. I now think of the feeling as ‘growing pains’. If you don’t stretch, you’ll get cramps.

This details what Sandra mentioned: Threshold Anxiety

“Kierkegaard, the nineteenth-century Danish philosopher, first described what has come to be known as ‘threshold anxiety’. He describes the feelings of a young man who is about to leave home to go out into the world to seek his fortune. As he stands on the threshold of the house, about to leave, he feels that he’s turning his back on everything that is warm, familiar, and secure — what he has known all his life. Beyond the threshold lies the world, filled with all that is unknown and strange. If the young man turns back at this point, he is lost. If, however, he can take the fear of the unknown and turn it into the excitement of the unlimited possibilities which are open before him, he grows in the moment and is alive, as never before.”
