Vanity Fair Hollywood

Love it, hate it or somewhere in between, you have to hand it to Diane Keaton for staying true to her style.

She wore her own clothes for the Vanity Fair cover shoot, and looks relaxed, happy and comfortable. Notice she’s the only one smiling…

When actresses on the red carpets so often seem to be engaged in a competition as to who can flash the most skin, her Quirky Gentlewoman looks are a breath of fresh air.

And speaking of fresh air…

skiing Beaver Creek view
Yep, cold. But what a view!

We’re back from our Colorado ski trip, and spent most of yesterday re-stocking the fridge, doing laundry, sorting through the mail, storing the ski stuff until next year, and just enjoying being home. While it was mostly colder and cloudier during the week than we’d have preferred, we also had LOTS of fresh snow, the best that I can remember. We enjoyed some amazing meals, which I’ll post more about later this week. As often happens, by the end of the week we were on Gastronomic Sensory Overload so it’s nice to be home and enjoying simpler and lighter fare.

lip plumping treatment

Right before we left, Brian from Makeover Workshop gave me a bottle of this Re-Creation Lip Treatment to try. I brought it along with me, figuring the dry, cold air would be a good “road test.” I applied two or three times a day, (plus a bit of SPF 30 chapstick while we were out skiing) and for the first time that I can remember, my lips did not chap AT ALL, even on the really snowy days. It’s great under lipstick too.

Swinging between extremes, we returned from temperatures in the teens (Farenheit) in Colorado to the low 80’s in Southern California. It’s sandal weather this week, and I’m crushing on these from Dansko….

So cute and really comfortable! I think the blue would be great with jeans. Time to schedule a pedicure….

What’s on your mind this week?

  1. The picture of the stream is so inviting! I wonder what the photo would look like if they all wore what they wanted to…I respect Diane for her decision…life is short, be true to who you are.

  2. I have mixed feelings. She looks happy and cute but it also seems a bit gimmicky. Another way of looking at it is that she is an older woman left to the finge. She is hiding her neck and most of her body.

  3. They are all computer air brushed……no one has skin, hair, etc that look perfect in front of the camera…….hats off to Diane for being true to herself and comfortable in her skin!

  4. Diane Keaton is beginning to look like a clown, Charlie Chaplin perhaps? She does not look like a gentle woman, no gentle woman would wear men’s clothes.

      1. I”m chiming in here. The slim cut of a man’s suit can look fantastic on a woman. I think that a touch of the masculine in clothing can actually make a woman more intriguing and stronger. Two of my favorite articles of clothing are a sweater of my dad’s. I can feel his presence when I wear it–and a wool cap he bought in Ireland. I wear it now and I love how it looks when I stuff my long hair into it. I am also a big fan of men’s cologne in the winter. The scents are better than women’s scents. Keaton looks fabulous and I once read that she is just more comfortable covered up than not covered up. It’s her choice and it’s who she is!

  5. Have loved her style since Annie Hall. Tried to imitate it when I was in college. I do think it’s her happiness and evident sense of fun that makes it work so well, tho.

  6. I think it is hit or miss with her, sometimes she gets it right and sometimes it is just a bit too much. The top hat is kinda cool never saw a girl rock that style, I kind of like it….
I know it is her look but it is like all the time she does this, to the point of it not being very special/surprise anymore, it is expected when you see her in photos.

  7. I think it’s great that Diane Keaton wears her own clothes in the shot. But the idea to do so wasn’t entirely down to her. The article says it was a collaboration between Diane and style director Jessica Diehl, trying to find something that suited Diane. And then Annie Leibovitz suggested that Diane already looked “pretty great” in the clothes she had on. She definitely has her own sense of style but let’s give the people behind the camera some credit for choosing to add a shot of whimsy to what is usually a pretty predictable photo, every year, actors dressed to the nines with very serious expressions. Anyhoo… still love Diane Keaton, and her style.
P.S. Re: those lovely sandals…. it must be great to go from winter to summer all in a day!

  8. I didn’t care for the Annie Hall version of her menswear–it was too rumpled. Now she looks like a Victorian dandy, and it’s so steampunk–I like it. It’s all about silhouette and pattern/texture instead of shouting LOOK AT MY FIGURE. That being said, she does have a great figure, which helps. (I’m not crazy about her hair, though–too messy. Oscar Wilde wouldn’t approve.)

    1. Lagatta, yes it is. Don’t know what happened to the El Niño that was supposed to bring us all the rain…

  9. Regarding Diane Keaton’s style of dress: I love it that she expresses her individuality in her dress. I heard her on an interview once that she feels more comfortable when she is covered up. I can relate because I’m always cold so layering is definitely one of my fashion “go-to’s”. Just think where we would be if everyone’s aesthetic was the same! Not only would we all be fashion carbon copies but it would greatly impact art, literature, architecture and on and on. Viva la difference!

  10. I love that you posted about Diane and how she is truly unique. It takes guts to “swim against the stream” as she has in this photo. It’d be much easier to let the stylist select what you should wear. I am a die-hard fan of hers, and can’t imagine a world without “Somethings Gotta Give”. My love of the movie has permeated my entire family! From my hubby, to my 30 year old, super-cool son–we’re all fans. Kudos to DIANE, and to you for choosing her!

  11. Clearly the shoot stylists emphasized Diane Keaton’s outlier image by placing her in the darkest corner almost out of the frame, which she brightens with her smile. I’m not sure which I admire more: her style or the chutzpah it takes to stand out as an individual.

I always laugh because it’s men who most seem to hate women in men’s clothing. On one blog post I did wearing manly attire the only man who commented said I looked like Stephen Hawking, whom I greatly admire.

Your ski holiday looks so refreshing and cleansing. I’m glad you had a good time.

  12. After reading her memoir, my hunch is that Diane Keaton chooses to be covered up from a deep-seated self-consciousness about her body. She mentions it a lot in her book. I can see how sticking with the Annie Hall style helps with that. Of course I think it’s rather tragic that somebody with her cute figure would be so hard on herself. She always looks fantastic in movies in non-suit clothes. She commented how she loves her daughter’s carefree spirit and lack of such self-critique with her ‘curves and all.’ It’s her own mannish style and I respect her for it, and I find it refreshing from the slits-to-there that for me cancel allure and style. We all have boobs {yawn}. Catherine Deneuve knew how to make a suit sexy! (A double-breasted one even – that was just too easy.)

This abrupt CA warm-up is for the birds! I’m a New England gal and your snow pictures are what I need to see outside my window. I hope El Niño isn’t finished with us already.

  13. I like her style, Diane Keaton. That said, with respect to the Vanity Fair shoot, they could have styled her in a way true to her individual look but that fit in more with the theme. I would have put her in a full black ball gown skirt with cumberbund, white button up with a lovely red brooch, and black velvet opera gloves. No hat. While I like her style, like many unique styles, there is a fine line where it can cross over into looking like a costume. A few times she crosses that line.

  14. I love Diane Keaton and her inate sense of style, that is always true to herself. However, I did feel that her outfit, in my eyes, made her seem self absorbed and “all about me”. Kinda like a wedding guest going to a black and white themed wedding in red because that is “her” colour that she always wears. Yes, it is would be true to the guest’s style, but would nonetheless appear out of place and inconsiderate. True, it was not Diane’s decision alone, but as Elle commented above, there would have been many outfits that have could have still suited Diane’s style and proclivities, but was more cohesive with the whole.

  15. Just started following your blog and wanted to tell you it’s fantastic! I love your style and have so many great ideas now on travel wardrobes, travel tips, and just seeing how many options there are for different looks. You’ve inspired me to buy a Givenchy pandora and I loved Mt St Michel in person and didn’t realize I could get it on a beautiful necklace! Love! Love! Thank you so much!

  16. I have always loved Diane Keaton and her individual style since I was bowled over by the film Annie Hall .it was the film of my generation as far as I was concerned . I also admire the fact that she still does her own thing in so far as clothes are concerned .frankley most women of our generation ,without the benefits of photoshopping look better with rather more than less clothing no matter how many hours we put into the gym . However her stripped morning suit out fit is a bit too literal for my taste .i am all for a bit of androgyny as in YSL ‘Le smoking ‘ and the smouldering sexually ambiguous Marlene Dietrich but this is bit too much of a nod to fancy dress for me anyway .
