not your standard-issue denim jacket

White House Black Market lightweight denim jacket

Between wonky schedules and minor technical difficulties, I haven’t been able to get a full outfit post done for this week. But I did want to show you this lightweight denim jacket while it’s still available, so grabbed a quick snap right before leaving for work yesterday.

The fabric and cut are a bit more polished than a standard western-style denim jacket, so this works for a casual or Business Casual workplace. The curved princess seaming creates a flattering shape, and it hangs nicely. As I mentioned earlier, I’m not crazy about the shiny silver buttons, and may replace them. I’m still working up to double-denim; here I’ve styled with black knit pants, but will try this with my white jeans next.

How do you wear your denim jackets?

  1. I wear my standard western-style denim jacket with summer dresses to fend off over-air-conditioned places. Love both the J. Crew and Madewell jackets above. Waiting for that EF blazer to go on sale.

  2. You look very chic as usual. I’d love to know what shoes you wore with this outfit. BTW, I’m smitten with your metallic Gucci pumps with the block heel!

  3. I love the way this looks on you Susan…the jacket is lots of fun! I hope you will stop by to see my post on the Eileen Fisher show…it was our first one to ever happen in Texas! Have a great day!

  4. How cute and fresh you look! I love your paired necklaces and the nonchalance of your rolled back sleeves revealing your striped shirt underneath.

I don’t own a regular indigo colored denim jacket– that dullish dark blue next to my face is “blah”. But I have collected a few colored denim jackets in the colors that do flatter me– purple, pink, white, spring green. That way I can wear them with knee length denim skirts, without that double denim look which doesn’t appeal. Also wear them with twill skirts and tights…

  5. I love denim, even more once I read how Diana Vreeland was the first “fashionista” to fully embrace it for garments we can wear for things other than manual labor 🙂 I’ll wear a denim jacket over dressy tops or even a maxi dress, to bring it down a couple notches and enable me to wear something fancy to work because I’ve balanced it with denim. Love your new jacket…seriously cute!

  6. I actually own this as well; I bought it after wandering into Black Market/White House at the mall while I was waiting for one of my daughters to finish perusing Forever 21. I’d never been in one of those shops – but this jacket called my name. To me, the fabric doesn’t read denim – though I don’t know what else you’d call it. In any case, I wore it with a pair of more faded boyfriend jeans and a fairly fitted striped top and my black brogues – and I felt darn cute. This is my long way of saying I think it works with denim as long as the jeans aren’t the same color. Oh – and I unbuttoned the sleeves and rolled them up and felt very Miami Vice.

  7. Ii ordered this jacket after you showed it originally and agree, it is flattering and a little different from the usual denim jacket. It is a perfect fit in my usual size. The only problem I had is that I had to order it from WHBM and it arrived a wrinkled mess.

  8. Nothing double-breasted or with lapels, just a collar. Dark denim or a deep colour: deep green, burgundy. NO pastels or overly loud colours, but like a change from black. Not too boxy, but no belts.

  9. I’ve been longing to see you showcase that denim jacket with the lovely cut and you have not disappointed, Susan, it looks super on you and great with that j crew top, I’m pleased you’ve shown that too. Looking forward to seeing you work the jacket into other combos now!
    Thanks for that, hugs, Mary.

  10. You are right. This is a fantastic jacket. Believe it or not, I don’t own any denim jacket. Denim near my face is not a good idea. Which is why my denim dress is a huge exception. I have imilar problems with silver or gold buttons, but I have to say I rather like them on this jacket of yours. Well styled.

    1. Your red leather jacket is splendid, though! Sorry about those nasty thieves and vandals… Also, being Dutch, you have the long legs to look good in jeans and trousers. I feel like a dwarf when I’m working there, much as I love the country.

  11. I like the jacket and the silver buttons. You have paired it very well with silver jewellery. This afternoon I am showing my new denim jacket on my blog. For me, such jackets are a challenge as jeans near my face is not a good idea. But once in a while you just think “oh what the heck, I don’t care”. Then you buy it and every time you take it out of the closet you sigh and think “oh dear, how am I going to style this?”
