casual vendredi: seeing red

olive utility jacket with red accessories

Lately I’ve been crushing on red. I find that red accessories scratch that itch for color, and really make an outfit pop. After yesterday’s post on utility jackets, I remembered how much I like the combo of red and olive, so put together this outfit that I wore for a casual office day.

Most of these pieces are now a few seasons old, but have remained favorites. I’m sorry to have teased you with the sandals yesterday on instagram, only to find out that they are no longer available in red  Thanks to reader Nancy who advised they are still available in red on amazon.com (link to available colors here). I’ve also linked to several similar styles in the widget below.

This J.Crew scarf has been a favorite for a couple of years now. I’ll wear with long ends as shown above, or wrapped twice around the neck with ends tucked through the loops as shown below.

What’s your favorite accessory color? Do you find it changes with the seasons?

  1. My mom would have loved your scarf. She was crazy about poppies. There’s a big, flaming field of them just behind my house now.
I’m with you on red. Just got a big red bag that makes me walk with extra zip. Just imagine what I’d do with red shoes!

  2. You look very snappy with those punchy accessories! Love the red bracelet with the poppy scarf. I too have always liked red with my olive neutrals. I have an olive drab slim skirt I used to wear with a red blouse. Purple and olive are another sophisticated and enlivening combo…

My favorite accessory color? Maybe teal. Or pale pink. I have a blush bag that I can wear with virtually everything. Oh– cream is a favorite color of mine for accessories too.

  3. Red must be in the air! I’ve hunting in vain for a pair of red flats. A little more heel than a ballet slipper, but not as dressy as Ferragamos. As usual, I have talked myself into something that doesn’t exist. I need a shoemaker!

  4. That’s a nice looking combination. Red isn’t my best color so I’m prone to olive and purples also. Utility jackets have volume, drawstrings or big pockets, so I like them with slim bottoms. If you were a denim skirt wearer that would be another option. Suede sandals won’t work here in DC, at least if you intend to walk around in them a lot, late afternoon thunderstorms are hard on suede shoes, you’ve got other options that look more wet street friendly.

  5. wow, sue! what a great outfit. aren’t green utility jackets so versatile? i wear mine year round. love the pops of color you brought in with your scarf and sandals.

  6. I am on the search for a green jacket like this! You should crush on red…it looks great on you! Love the scarf!

  7. So here’s something odd. I cannot wear olive with black. If I have anything olive on, which to me has a brown tinge, I have to carry a non-black bag and wear non-black shoes. At a guess it comes from having very cool coloring? You are more spring than summer, right?

    1. amidprivilege, I think my coloring leans warmer (though it has cooled a little over the last few years). I’ve always worn olive with black, but I tend to choose olives that have less brown in them.

  8. LOVE that scarf! You look great. I like olive with red also but only wear them separately–thank for sharing!

  9. Hi Susan,
Love the scarf, and the red looks marvellous on you, with your lovely light blond hair!
My go to accent colour is always purple. Year round.
Love the new website format – it’s always great to see what you’re wearing!

  10. Deeply lovely outfit. That scarf is so sweetly beautiful. I have the biggest soft spot in my heart for poppies, as they remind me of one set of my paternal great-grandparents, who I was fortunate enough to know briefly (they both passed by the time I was six). They lived in a wee house with a small garden and in the summer months, as the hot West Coast air rustled through the blades of grass, rows of crimson poppies swayed in front of their house, beckoning one inside.

    1. Hi Jessica, thanks and thank you for sharing those lovely memories of your grandparents’ poppy garden!

  11. I’m getting the vapors over this post. Seriously. You have NO idea how much I love red. It is a good thing you are not my neighbor or I would break into your home and steal that J. Crew scarf. How do I love red? Let me tell you. My new favorite “toy” is my red leather Longchamp Le cuir bag. I want to marry it. Add to that my red ballet flats. My red J. Crew Schoolboy blazer. Red F**K me pumps from Vince Camuto, red Tippi Sweater from J. Crew/. Hermes scarf with lotsa red. Red wool skirt from J. Crew…and..my ever-present red nail polish. My motto “Better off Red”!

    1. Aww, thanks Catherine! I love those Longchamp Le Cuir bags too, so lightweight and practical!

  12. You look so hip (and I use that word because I can’t think of another that captures your chic and modern sensibility.) I don’t usually wear red although I have learned there are shades that would work for me. Love the poppy scarf. For some reason, I have been attracted by the color raspberry, one color that I NEVER wear. It’s been very hard to integrate it into my very warm, peach-dominated wardrobe. But it makes me happy!

  13. Love this combination. I need to pull out my utility jacket again now that the weather is better. Red is a go to colour of mine too for accessories, but lately I have been using blue as well.
