french country house

My friend Sharon Santoni, who writes the lovely blog My French Country Home, is in the U.S. for a book tour promoting her latest book, “My Stylish French Girlfriends.”  She’s making several appearances all over the country, and you can see her tour schedule HERE. Makeover Workshop Blondi Brow Pencil

I’ve tried several brow products over the years to help fill in and define my skimpy brows. But I keep coming back to this one, another fabulous “one and done” product. It delivers a natural look that stays put all day. The color “Blondi” is a taupe color that works for light to medium tones.

Shaun Evans as Constable MorseWe’ve been watching the Masterpiece Mystery series “Endeavor” on Amazon Prime. It’s a prequel to the popular Inspector Morse series. Though some of the plots are rather contrived, mystery fans will enjoy the twists and turns, and Shaun Evans (who plays the young Constable Morse) isn’t too hard on the eyes. It’s set in the mid-60’s and the costuming (especially the women) is really good.

makeup remover towlettes

When it comes to my skin, I’m a bit of a clean freak. In the evenings I remove makeup first, then cleanse. I’ve used the Neutrogena makeup remover towlettes for years, but picked up these from Burt’s Bees on a whim on my last grocery run and like them even better. They feel very gentle and soothing.

  1. The new season of Endeavour just started here on the east coast and it’s been eagerly awaited in my household. Love them all — Endeavour, Morse, Inspector Lewis. The Mod fashions in the new season are fabulous! I was born just a tad too late to have been in my blooming years during the late sixties (I was just 10) but I do recall a wild black and white graphic shift minidress that I wore in fifth grade, and thought I was the cat’s meow!

  2. “Endeavor” is great! It’s so interesting the way the Sixties sort of cleaved, partway through. The fashions in the very early part of the decade still harkened back to more demure styles, as in “The Dick Van Dyke Show”. You can also see that in my favorite show of the period, the legendary “Fugitive” series with David Janssen. We have the entire DVD set and I revel in the clothes and interiors of the time.

Then– was it around ’66? (earlier than that in the U.K., of course) in American TV shows at least, the influence of Carnaby Street came on strong. A guilty pleasure of that period is “The Mod Squad”– slightly campy but huge fun, with Peggy Lipton, Clarence Williams III and Michael Cole stylishly clad in bell bottoms, tunics and beads.

Oh, and a British series which ran in the very period that Endeavor is set in, “Secret Agent” (also called Danger Man?) with Patrick McGoohan, I think showcased both early classic Sixties and later mod Sixties looks over the course of its run…

  3. We love and watch everything Morse in my house…prequels, sequels, the lot. Although I did find the first episode of the new season of Endeavour a little bit (okay a lot) too reminiscent of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby. I mean, a man who lives in an opulent house next door, who throws wonderful parties and has a mysterious past and is named Bixby…Josh Bixby? Not to mention the fact that he’s in love with the wife of the upper-class bully, who also happens to be having an affair with a redhead who gets run down by a car. My poor husband who has never read Gatsby couldn’t understand why I kept sighing and saying..”Oh…come on! You’ve got to be kidding!” and such. Okay…I’m done now. Just had to get that off my chest. Still love the show and the characters… although you can’t tell that from this comment.

    1. Hah! I said exactly the same thing about 10 minutes in to Monsieur about Gatsby. After a while, we started calling the wife “Daisy.” 😉

      1. Me three! Very GG. Love Endeavour and the clothes and styles, but never have warmed up to Inspector Morse.

  4. We love Masterpiece Theatre. We’ve watched all the “Lewis” seasons, I think, which is the sequel series to Morse – and I eventually got the DVD box set of the first season of Morse, since we’d never seen any of those. Having a hard time getting in to it, but maybe keeping up with Endeavor (the prequel to Morse) will encourage us to tuck in to that treasure trove.

I too love watching the 60’s fashions (I was born in 1959) on these shows. The “Inspector George Gently” series (we see it on Netflix) is another one set in the 60’s in England – and another really good show.

    1. I second the recommendation for Inspector George Gently — it’s excellent, particularly in the relationship between Gently and his and oh-so-callow sidekick, and in its capturing of the huge social changes — fashion, cars, gender roles, marriage breakdowns, feminism, labour unrest — hitting rural England in the 60s. Some serious exploration of ethics and morality in justice and the law. . .

  5. Oh thanks for the TV recommendation – sounds like our style! As we finish up Game of Thrones and Peaky Blinders, we are “due” for something new. xo

    1. This is one we’ve never followed for some reason – I think we saw one or two episodes. I see it is on Hulu with a subscription. NOT on Netflix (except DVD subscription) or Amazon Prime.

I’ll have to add it to our Hulu queue.

  6. I just discovered Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries on Netflix and PBS. Fabulous clothes in 1920s Australia and intriguing stories, too. I turned off Endeavor after half an hour but will give it another try. Doc Martin is my summer comfort entertainment. Thanks to all of you for sharing.

    1. Can I respond to this? I found Miss Fisher’s stories way too silly for ME (retired cop husband enjoys them!), but I LOVE her hair and clothes!! Totally agree about Doc Martin being comfort entertainment. We’ve seen most of the episodes but just started watching AGAIN – SUCH a great, great show. The characters, the stories, the scenery, the accents (we do turn on closed captioning so we catch every word).

      I love talking television. ha!

    2. Love Miss Fisher! I have always been a fan of a badass woman detective type (starting with Emma Peel back in the Sixties), but the best thing about Miss Fisher is her impossibly glamourous wardrobe and home! Absolutely fabulous.

  7. Here in Australia, J.B. and I love the above mentioned tv series – Broadchurch has been our favourite for suspense and intrigue. We always have to wait a bit longer than UK viewers for them all but it’s worth it. (Maybe though, we get to see the fabulous Miss Phyrne Fisher first!)

  8. I have so enjoyed Endeavour, the young Morse character quickly grew on me, but I really recommend The Night Manager. Hugh Laurie plays the baddie and the goodie is oh so easy on the eye. It’s not a 60s period piece but it is a totally gripping series and I believe a sequel is being made. Happy viewing!

  9. I need to find a good series, it is all repeats on TV now. The crime series just get worse and worse, so much gore and scary psycho nut killers. I never watch from internet just what is on TV, so it is whatever the latest choice.

I watch a lot of cooking shows and anything about rebuilding/flipping homes. Except that one show extreme home makeover, it wasn’t about the design but alot of drama.

Would like a good mystery series….
