friday finds: fresh summer stripes

lightweight cotton striped topStripes are a style perennial, and are everywhere this season, especially in variations of blue and white. Though I never tire of a classic marinière, I’m ready for a fresh and updated way to wear stripes. I’ve been homing in on some warm weather options that would work as part of a travel wardrobe, and the lightweight cotton top above is on my short list. The frayed edge hem is a nice detail.

Chicos so slimming striped jeans,

I’ve had a pair of vertical stripe jeans on my wishlist for several seasons now. These (also available in Petites online) might be serious contenders.

long striped caftan

I’m often asked about what to pack for a beach resort vacation. If I were packing for one today, I’d take something like this long striped kaftan, which can go from beach coverup to dinner just by adding a few accessories. You could even take the length up a few inches and wear it over white jeans.

knit asymetrical hem striped skirt

Here’s another beachy look; this one’s a knit so you can just roll it up and toss in your suitcase. It’s available in Misses and Petites.

plus size ikat print pants

These ikat-print stripe pants (Plus-size) could be dressed up or down, and the 100% rayon fabric will be breathable and washable.

laced front striped shirt

The laced-up front takes this shirt up a notch from the expected (though you may want a camisole underneath).

What’s your favorite way to wear stripes?

  1. That first top is EXACTLY like one I made myself in the ’70s! I had a bunch of them. I bet the pattern is still around somewhere (no longer in my size, sigh).
It’s true that it’s the perfect style for looking/feeling cool and being protected from the sun.

  2. A kaftan is a good packing item. It can also do duty as a robe should your nightie be a bit skimpy for lounging.

  3. Stripes are a nice clean look. I prefer mine in only two colors,(usually blue and white or black and white) and am partial to the classic stripes used in Oxford cloth shirts. Unfortunately, whenever I see wide-ish stripes of the same width going vertically, they always remind me of holocaust uniforms–I can’t help the association–so the caftan, while I love caftans, would have to be in different stripe.

  4. These are beautiful! One comment, however, as I’ve been a writer and editor my entire life, you are “homing in.” Honing is to sharpen something such as a knife. I don’t mean to be difficult. I just want your blog to be perfect!

  5. Oh wow, thank you for linking to Adrienne and me. We always appreciate it! I am crazy for stripes any time of the year but especially in summer and you would laugh to see my closet there are currently 7 striped shirts lined up ready to go and I am going to add a few more this week. Ha ha. Have a great weekend! xx

  6. I absolutely love navy and white horizontally striped T’s. I have two long sleeve and one short sleeve (J.Crew and Gap). Two are with me on a trip to London as I write. BTW, I flew over from Toronto on the day flight wearing Eileen Fisher’s wool crepe straight leg pant (thanks to your review here) and they were fantastic! Wore my Isabel Marant jacket to lunch today too but by 2pm it was much too warm. Felt great wearing it though!

  7. All are lovely. Just one, though gives me pause…#4 the knit. Not good for a lady with a
    little bit of a tummy.
