Some Doings In London

with Alyson of That's Not My Age

Happy Fourth to those back home!

We had a lovely weekend in London, and covered a lot of ground! We did not plan out a full itinerary this trip, but wanted to leave ourselves open time to explore based on weather and suggestions. Fortunately, we seemed to arrive at the end of the rainy spell, and the weather’s been mostly fabulous.

On Saturday we met up with Alyson of That’s Not My Age, and the very nice man she refers to as The Blog Widower for some brunch at a fabulous cafe near King’s Cross called Grain Store. We always have so much to talk about, and could easily have sat and chatted for more than the two hours we did. As we were saying our goodbyes, they suggested that le Monsieur and I walk part of the way back toward our hotel along the Regent’s Canal, which ran right along where the restaurant was situated. That sounded like a great idea and it was!

There are several locks along the canal, most of which seem to be manually operated.

Part of the canal route passes through the Camden Town Market, which was packed with food and other vendors and people. Above, a giant pan of paella, which would have been tempting if we hadn’t just had brunch.

Some random “yarn-bombing” along the way…

There are lots of houseboats along the way; some have been decorated quite elaborately!

After a couple of miles, we peeled off, and crossed over the canal to walk through Regent’s Park. (Hmmm, sensing a theme here…) London has some staggeringly beautiful parks, and this one was no exception.

If you’re planning a visit to London, I’d highly recommend carving out a couple of hours to explore Regent’s Canal.

I’ll stop at this point as I need to finish this and get out the door, but will be back with more soon. It’s been a full and fun trip and we still have two days in London before heading on to Normandy. Love this city!!

  5. So glad you got some sunshine!
The canal reminds me of Paris, and also where I live, by the Canal du Midi. I guess they’re from the same era. The houseboats, too.
Hampstead Heath is another great park….

  6. Thank you for the great photos, and also for the introduction to Alyson and her blog. Enjoy Normandy and the rest of your trip!

  7. Oh, wandering a beautiful place you haven’t seen before. Delicious! In every sense. The houseboats are beautiful and romantic, although living on one may not be what my imagination conjures up. I’m glad you got to meet up with Alyson. I can just hear the laughter and non-stop chatter. I hope the rest of your trip is as satisying!

  8. My two favorite style bloggers (actually, the only two on my radar) in one post! What a great way to start the day!

  9. Hi Susan, I am a 50 something fan from Honduras. Love your blog! Thanks for describing and showing us London. Have a great time!

  10. Regent’s Park is a favorite with our family. When we stop over in London we always picnic in Regent’s Park and visit the rose garden. My husband is an avid rose gardener and the garden there gives him great inspiration. We too have done the canal walk and it is fabulous! Thank you for posting the pictures and reminding me of happy times and good memories with my family!

  11. Looks like a great time! I am a fan of Alyson’s too. Regent’s Canal, another thing to add to my list for next time. Had to laugh at the Pimm’s sign; have always heard of it but never tasted it until this last trip. Planning to source some in my local Texas liquor store so I can introduce my friends to it!

  12. Such beautiful scenery! London is on my mile long list of places to visit! Thanks for sharing your trip!

  13. It was lovely to see you and le Monsieur, Susan and we were very tempted to walk along the canal with you. Hope you enjoyed the rest of your stay in London, have a fabulous time in France and let’s catch-up again soon. x

  14. We were in london last week and walked along the canal and then regent’s park. Quelle coincidence! Thr lipault I purchased on your recommendation was perfect for our 3 wk trip. I never had to check it and had plenty of room for purchases. In London we stayed at hazlitt’s. Highly recommend.
