Simple Interest

Outfit with embroidered teeLayering is one of my favorite ways to add interest to a simple outfit, but during warmer months that’s sometimes just not workable. Some like wearing prints, but I’m mostly Print-Averse. I’d been looking at lightweight embroidered tops earlier in the season, and while I love those Boho-inspired looks, they just didn’t work for me. So when I spotted this simple embroidered top at Sandro in Paris, I had to try it on. I love the Asian-inspired motif, and the fabric is very light.

Asian-inspired embroidered teeI’ve washed it (gentle cycle, cold water, in a lingerie bag) and it line dries within a few hours. I wore it on our last day in Paris when it was beginning to get quite warm, and was comfortable, didn’t overheat.

Wearing: vintage pearl earrings (similar) | top | jeans (similar) | ring | watch | bag | sandals

Lip color is NARS “Red Square.”

vintage medallion jewelry ringI’m wary of too many focal points in an outfit, but I think the red bag works well here. Usually I find black and red on their own too harsh, but the denim in the mix softens it up. The ring is from the new French Kande fall collection, and is very comfortable to wear.

Stuart Weitzman suede tassel sandalsI’m afraid the Stuart Weitzman sandals above are almost sold out everywhere, but I think these are a nice alternative (albeit with a lower heel) and I’ve included a few other tasselled sandals in the widget below.

How do you add interest to a simple outfit in warm weather?

  1. I’m Print Averse, too. But this looks FAB – I like the flash of red and the co-ordinating handbag. Hope you had a fantastic time in France! x

  2. A colorful bag is a great idea. Bangles are fun, too, especially since they don’t work as well when we have to put on coats. And with hair up, big earrings are perfect. And they don’t feel hot!

  3. Love that top, Sue. Especially with the red bag. Still it’s been sooooo humid here for several weeks that long or even three quarter sleeves are too hot with pants or jeans. But I’m finding that I can do long sleeves if my legs can feel the breeze… so with shorts or a skirt I’d be okay.

    1. Where I live (Houston) I never, ever wear jeans from June through October. Too freaking hot! This is why white jeans, which I love, just aren’t functional for me. White linen pants are a go, though. Similarly, anything with long or even 3/4 sleeves, if it’s close-fitting, doesn’t work either. This climate is tricky for “women of a certain age”, if one wants to cover up a bit. I wear sleeveless more than the condition of my upper arms would indicate!

  4. I like the way you add excitement with embroidery, a zing of color, and pretty shoes. And your adorable haircut, which always looks polished but playful.

I love to layer, so hot, humid summers are challenging. Let’s see. In hot weather I sometimes do wear a print on top, just to make my one-layer outfit more interesting. E.g.: Yesterday, I wore a lightweight denim skirt, a lilac button-down shirt in a small, muted animal print pattern, and flats. Jewelry can “count” as a layer, so I wore a long chain interspersed with pastel (cream, pink, lilac) pearls, and another very delicate silver station chain. Felt airy. Since we were going into pumped-up air conditioning, I could at least “carry” my blush linen blend jacket!

  5. A brilliant way to wear a print without wearing a print. This demonstrates that once you know your limits, you can find solutions that work well – keep eyes open, and brain working!

  6. I used to be print-averse. But, as you, I now find a patterned tee or two have become staples, also to be worn with non-plebian shoes and denim. Simple interest, unfussy. xox.

  7. I love your outfit, and I agree blue jeans lend it a nonchalant softness that compliments the top so well. I love prints, but also the freshness of a solid top with a neckerchief or a long chain with a pendant.

  8. I found your blog quite by accident when I was writing a post yesterday about fashion – I love your style! I have added your blog to the blogroll on my page so I can keep up with your posts – so glad to have found you.

  9. I am print-averse, too, Sue. For myself, I think it has to do with being short. It is so easy to be overtaken by anything “busy” in my clothing. But somehow (perhaps only in my own mind) a graphic tee like this one is different than an overall print–it’s really just a solid shirt with a focal point. Looks wonderful on you. And with the NARS lipstick and your bag–pow!

  10. Love this look on you and the t-shirt is adorable! Could you tell us what size you bought? They say it’s “coupé ample” or fairly baggy, but Sandro things sometimes come up a bit small for those of us with a bust 🙂 I’m the same size as you (height and shape). Thanks in advance!

      1. Thank you so much! You really look fab here, I keep coming back to it. The bag is a real stunner too.

  11. Susan, as always, you achieve that all-too-difficult balance of chic sophistication and approachability. I love this look! Thanks for sharing one of your Parisian souvenirs. I’m sure that with each wearing it will bring back some wonderful memories of your recent trip.

  12. On you, the Sandro top is really beautiful, and how wonderful that it is pure cotton. Did it need any ironing after you handwashed it? I wish it came in another color, as I avoid black when I’m not working. But I am tempted…. You are such a good shopper and so generous to share your finds with us!

  13. Wonderful outfit! It’s so fun to find a piece while traveling! In April I found a wonderful stripped tunic by Sandro during my trip to Paris and Provence.
I have the Marc Fisher sandals in a tobacco colored suede and they’re great! I’ve been getting raves on them!
PS: stumbled upon your “foulard” series on You Tube! Having such fun!

  14. Glad you showcased a red bag. One of my fave bags is my Red Longchamp LePliage Cuir. I love wearing one color and carrying my red bag. Red. It’s my favorite color!!!

  15. Oh that’s a wonderful top! just the right amount of everything. Summer dressing does get challenging, as we don’t want to add vests, boots and wooly scarves.
