Summoning Fall

Eileen Fisher duster cardigan

We’ve had a run of blissfully mild days this week; if I didn’t know better, I’d think we might actually be on track for an early Fall. Some of the evenings have been almost cool enough to comfortably wear this fall sweater. (It’s lighter weight than it looks.)

I purchased these ponte knit leggings during the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. They have a thicker waistband, the fabric is a little lighter, and they’re slightly more fitted than the skinny ponte knit pants, which are now marked down in Misses and Petites sizes. I’ve tried a lot of ponte knit pants over the last couple of years, and the Eileen Fishers are still my favorites. They don’t bunch or cling, the fabric isn’t shiny, and they can be machine washed and line dried. They wear well if properly cared for. They’re great for travel during cooler months, and can dress up or down.

I tried the cardigan in both the regular and petite sizes, and decided I liked the drama of the extra length of the regular size. It’s hard to capture when I’m photographing myself with a remote, but one of the best things about this cardigan is the way it moves.

  1. Love the grey cardigan, Sue. Especially with the brown bag…. and the gold earrings and touches of it in the necklace… really warms up the cool grey and black. Fall has arrived here and I’m hoping it stays. Crisp mornings perfect for walking, and cool nights. I’m looking forward to wearing anything that’s not a tank and shorts!

    Summer be gone!

P.S. Much easier to say that now that I’m retired. A few years ago the end of summer spelled the beginning of the season of prepping and marking and meetings and, and, and. Phew. Life is good.

  2. My reindeer sweater! Seriously, I have a black, white and red cardigan with a reindeer design, and it’s my current favorite…
    Unless it’s my black cashmere turtleneck… sigh… I love a good sweater!
    hugs,

  3. Here in London, we have had a few weeks of very hot weather, until this morning and it’s been pouring with rain. I am looking forward to wearing a similar grey cardigan – it’s Merino wool from Viyella. Then there is the navy blue coat from M&S – the best way to describe it is as a blanket coat, very unstructured wool material without a lining. The collar and cuffs turn back to an electric blue colour – tres chic. I think it should work very well in early Autumn.

  4. That’s a great combination, the grey, black, and caramel, and I love the way the cardigan’s length, the necklaces, and the bag’s structure and texture enliven that fairly restrained column of black. I’m currently trying to pack for two and a half months living out of a carry-on, after just barely having unpacked moving boxes that have housed most of my wardrobe for the past four months. I have a new black, knee-length merino knit slim skirt I’m looking forward to wearing and I’m hoping to work my camel JCrew Regent blazer into the mix regularly On verra. . . .

  5. I’m looking forward to wearing my Frye boots and Dr.Martens again! I miss wearing closed toe shoes since the summer has been so hot and I’ve just been living in sandals.

  6. Fabulous colour combo. You’ve given me an idea how to incorporate tan for a ‘cool’ colours wearer. In NZ we are entering spring so light layers are finally working for us. I’m having to rationalise my wardrobe since losing 20lbs over 8 months and your blog is keeping me on track for a coordinated wardrobe. Thank you

  7. Nice! A bit arty. Chic and elegant. Love your bag choice with it. Had to look up “ponte knit” haha. Learning every day. Yes that is a life saver for many. Including the manufacturers as their sizes fit more women better.
Fall has not yet set in in The Netherlands. Although it is of course colder in the morning and evenings it is still quite warm during the day. To our standards that is..

  8. Hey All!
I have those Paul Green shoes and I love them!! I have to say ,though ,that my finicky feet require me to customize every shoe I wear, and these were no different. So Ladies, if you have the same issue, moleskin is your friend! The adhesive, soft padded material that is designed to cushion sore bunions, etc, can be cut and stuck inside shoes to take up slack and cushion them to fit better. I have a ‘low volume’ foot and a high arch. In these Paul Green shoes I needed to cut moleskin and stick it inside the ‘roof’ of the shoe to fit more snuggly over my arch and prevent my foot from sliding forward. I also put clear arch pads in them.
    Et Voila! Custom fit shoes.
They are really comfortable now for walking and standing and look awesome with EVERYTHING, all year round. A great investment.

  9. I can’t wait to wear my flannel plaid shirts again. It is still way too hot here in NorCal for a flannel shirt over a tee or tank.

  10. I swore I was not going to give those long cardis a second look. Then I saw the pic of you with the gray cardi and the Paul Green shoes……….What can I say??????????????

  11. Just A Gorgeous Outfit! I love the whole look here. I have been on the fence about purchasing a long cardigan, but after seeing how this style and cut looks on you I think I will make my purchase.

  12. I am tall 5’10” BUT HAVE GONE INTO 3X SIZE. UGH.
I AM 81 love your style. Do not wear cling but if clothing skins could wear it. My question is do you have suggestions of brand or where yo find these styles in plus sizes. Thank you..
P.S. I know my age is up there but i still enjoy looking good
