Room With A View: New York

midtown Manhattan view

I’ve been on the go since I first arrived in New York on Friday night. Had trouble falling asleep that first night so I slept late on Saturday, had a light breakfast, got myself ready, and hoofed it down to Grand Central to catch a train. Our cousin’s son’s wedding took place about an hour north in Westchester County. The weather had suddenly turned too cool to wear what I’d packed for the event (a linen dress and cardigan) so I wore lightweight silk separates (jacket, pants and top, all EF, black and grey). I wasn’t really happy with this look for a wedding, but it was all that I’d brought that felt appropriate and was almost warm enough for a cool evening outdoors. C’est la vie.¯\_(ツ)_/¯ So no, I didn’t get a picture. The wedding itself was a casual backyard celebration (in a beautiful countryside setting) and the other guests wore everything from party dresses to cargo shorts and Hawaiian shirts.

Yesterday I spent a couple of hours working on future blog posts, and then set out to explore the immediate area. Lots of people seem to be in town for the long weekend, and the streets are packed.

The windows at Bergdorf-Goodman are always fun…

Sorry about the glare; there’s just no way to avoid it.

The weather’s turned warm again, so no Fall fashion to speak of on the streets yet, but I did do some Shoe Watching. LOTS of sneakers of all types still prevalent, including some with sequins or jeweled embellishments. On 5th Avenue, some of the more fashion-forward footwear selections…

The woman wearing these was (I’m guessing) in her 40’s and had a very Creative Fashionable style. When I asked her about her shoes, she said “they’re Miu Miu and SO comfortable!”

The women wearing these shoes were much younger, but I think it shows an interesting evolution of the sneaker trend.

This morning I’m going to try to see the “Manus X Machina: Fashion In An Age Of Technology” exhibit at The Metropolitan Museum. Later I’m scheduled to meet up with another blogger (someone I really admire and am thrilled to be meeting in person), and then another NY friend for cocktails. Tuesday one of my blogger Partners In Crime will be joining me from California for some hijinks. Stay tuned…

  1. Don’t know what your plans are but if you have time, walk the high line. It’s a nice walk through some great areas. Also the 911 Memorial is very heart touching. Have a great time.

  2. Enjoy! Would love to get your opinion on Le District if you make it down there. I wasn’t impressed. Was the wedding in Woodstock?? I miss living in NYC so much–more pics please!

  3. I recall my eldest sons wedding. I was so thrilled about the thought of a supposed church wedding that I bought myself a Lela Rose dress complete with Jimmy Choo heels & a vintage Dior clutch. You cannont image my shock when my son and daughter in law decided to get married on a northern NSW beach. No place for Lela Rose or Jimmy Choo!

  4. I love your pics of Berdorf’s windows. I used to “do” windows in Chicago and can really appreciate all the imagination and all the work. Have a great time. Doing any shopping? I’d stop at Barneys and check out fragrances….

  5. Love the Miu Miu boots. And Bergdorf’s windows. And love the Palace — great views of St. Patricks. Best part — you’re so close to the Park. I walk and walk and walk there when I’m in NYC. Cannot get enough. Lucky you. 🙂

  6. I’m sighing so much with contentment I may just hyperventilate. Hahaha. Ooh, New York. Digging in. The windows alone fuel my imagination. I love packed streets with side escapes into cozy cafes and other nooks and crannies. Looks like you’re having fun. Carry on.
PS I love your c’est la vie thingy. I’ve never seen that one. Hahaha.

  7. If you have time for more museums, my favorites are the Neue Gallery (especially if you haven’t seen the magnificent Klimt painting “The Lady in Gold”0 and the Rubin Museum in Chelsea focusing on Himalayan Art. The Rubin has a lovely cafe. You could walk the Highline to get there!

  8. I love your travel posts and have been searching through all your travel wardrobe posts for inspiration. I will be travelling from the UK to the US for two and a half weeks from 25 September and am puzzling over what to pack. What will the weather be like at that time of year in Washington, Philadelphia and New York? Do I need wet or cooler weather clothes and shoes? Our plans are to visit the sights, enjoy the food and do some shopping. I am a habitual over-packer but I am determined to travel lightly (or should that be, “lighter”) this time – to this end, I’ve purchased a new 69cm suitcase (I don’t think I could do just carry-on like you) but have received scoffing comments from family that it’s far too small, especially with all the shopping opportunities out there. Another reason to keep the luggage manageable is that we are taking the train between the cities so will have to handle our own cases – no just throwing them in a car like we’ve done in the past. Would love if you have any advice as to what might be appropriate to take!

    1. I’m hoping some of my readers who live in those areas can chime in and provide some average temperature ranges and weather conditions. It’s been a few decades since I’ve visited those cities in the fall. 🙂

    2. I live in Maryland now near DC and lived in NYC for many years. Washington DC will still be warm in late September, mid 70’s, but likely not humid which will be lovely. NYC will be a bit cooler. Rain always a strong possibility in the Fall. Hope you have a fabulous time — perfect time to be in two of my favorite cities!!

  9. LOVE. THE. COATS. Sadly, I only have a month or 2 here in North Carolina to wear a coat, but man, I would wear one of those brocade numbers in a heart beat.

We went to Manus X Machina in July (Poor Hubby – he was completely at my beck and call for the weekend) and it was very nostalgic for me (college). It was our first time in forever as a couple – sans kids.
Hope you had a lovely time in NYC!!!

    1. Thank you Caroline. I have been doing just that. Temperatures seem quite high to me at the moment and it’s still a bit early for forecasts for the end of Sept/beginning of Oct.
