Leopard Remix, Take Two

leopard and cobalt blue

Several of you have mentioned that you’d like to see more “remixed” outfits. I hear ya…we’re all trying to get the most out of our wardrobes these days. While I regularly wear many of my wardrobe pieces in multiple outfit posts, most often they’re my basic pieces. That’s the beauty of good basics: they can be worn over and over without calling attention to themselves.

As I mentioned in Friday’s post, my first attempt at creating a different look with this leopard jacket fell flat. I’d styled it with subdued earth-tones, going for an “elegant neutral” look, but the overall effect was rather muddy and drab. I like this MUCH better.

I’ve actually been searching for a leopard coat or jacket for decades. I’ve rolled up the sleeves as they’re just a little bit long and I haven’t had time yet to get them shortened. Apologies again that this particular coat is no longer available, but leopard coats seem to be on-trend this year, so your chances of finding one you like may be better than average. I’ve included a few options in the widget below.

pearl necklace with vintage medallion

I’ve also re-mixed this pearl necklace from French Kande, swapping out a medallion from a different FK necklace. On their website, they now offer the option to customize many of the necklace styles by selecting from a choice of medallions!

block heel ankle strap pumps

I always loved the style of the Valentino Tango pumps, but ouch! They were uncomfortable across the top of my feet, even when I sized up. (Those of you with a narrower foot or lower instep may have better luck.) I found this similar style from Paul Green last year and even though the heel is a little higher, they’re quite comfortable. They’re no longer available but here’s another option that’s very close in style and with a lower heel, and lower price.

Is there a “standout” piece in your wardrobe that you’ve been able to style in different ways?

  1. I love the coat and the blue sweater together. Blue is my favorite color to wear. Cannot bring myself to buy this type of coat because I live in Florida! For example, It has been chilly the past few days and I actually got to wear leggings and a sweater!

  2. I’ve already confessed I had never considered leopard and bright blue together, but will now find and wear that combo. Thanks again for showing these details.

Question — when you need something altered in a way that’s not just hemming pants, where do you find a good tailor? I’m not having much luck on that front lately.

    1. Thanks, Ann! I’ve had little to no luck finding a tailor I’d trust with complicated alterations. If anyone reading has a good recommendation in the West Los Angeles area, please let me know!

  3. Love the coat w/colour. I made my first foray into animal prints when I bought a pair of leopard print boots in Paris – I love them! Like your coat, they don’t require neutrals to look well – in fact a punch of colour somewhere makes them stand out.

  4. I too had been searching for the right leopard coat for years, one that wouldn’t drown my small frame…. found it in Marks and Spencer!! Sadly now out of stock. We certainly get the weather to wear it in Scotland! I’ve been lazily pairing it mostly with black, though with a statement brooch with a lot of red in it. You can see a post/pic of my coat on my (fledgling) blog – Oohclothes.com. Enjoying your posts and the process of finding a likeminded online style community

  5. I love a nice leopard print scarf, or ballet flats also carry the print well … but all I can think of when I see a leopard coat are the prostitutes touting their wares down by the docks, trying to stay at least a little bit warm, but still sexy! Maybe Ive just seen too many hookers in leopard in my time! Lol.

  6. Love your pizzazz! Thanks for inspiring this mama to take it up a notch. Now proud owner of leopard print heels — how did I manage without them?

  7. The blue definitely makes the outfit look crisp and fresh.Well played!

My favorite statement item to remix is a bright violet paisley blouse I bought from deep sale a few years back. It looks pretty wild in my otherwise quiet wardrobe, but I’ve found out it actually is quite a versatile wintery piece. I believe this is precisely because most of my wardrobe consists of neutral basics. I don’t wear the blouse all the time- just a few times during the winter season, and every time it’s styled differently. Black for drama, light or medium grey to tone down the piece, dark brown and gold for adding warmth as they pick up warm tones of the print…I think everyone should have their own versatile statement piece!

  8. I’m a fan of animal print myself, Susan. I love how you have styled it with the bold blue. Adding that touch of animal print always gives me an extra edge to the attitude. Looks like it does that for you too!
A very successful restyle. Have a fabulous week!
    xx, Heather

  9. That blue is fantastic. I have a shirt that color, too, and now you’re inspiring me to try it with my tiger striped scarf!

  10. I love leopard type animal prints and have worn them sparingly and used them in my home since the 70’s LOL.

Right now, I’m coveting your find and your look! IMO – Your coat is a beautiful combination of color and perfect contrasts – I especially like the pale ivory background and how it works beautifully with your hair and skin tone. I’ll bet your coat will look fabulous with many colors (thinking of reds also).

    1. Thanks so much, Pam! There are so many different leopard prints out there, and finding the right one for our coloring can be tricky.

  11. Would I call it a standout piece? Perhaps, but it is just a pair of back and off-white summer wool peg-leg houndstooth pants. These were in my professional rotation, often styled with low black pumps and a stylish black wool sweater or packet. Very conservative. But, I have also found that these are great with bright blue or purple tops and especially great with an Aquatalia pointy toe burgundy menswear style flat – a little edgy. I have occasionally tucked them into a knee high boot and paired with a silver sweater for date night. In the summer I can pair them with a tank top and scarf and go anywhere. Like an animal print, it has become a neutral.

  12. Happy New Year Susan! As always, I am loving your posts. I purchased those Paul Green shoes earlier and agree with you that they are surprisingly comfortable for (what I consider) a higher heel. As for the leopard coat, as always with your widgets, I LOVE the most expensive selection. Sigh.

  13. Susan, this looks great but it got me thinking. I loved, no, correction, I adored the furry jacket you featured in a packing post for a ski trip a year ago, but I’ve never caught a post of you wearing it. Is it possible for you to do a post of that one as I’d love to see it styled and “in the flesh” so to speak.

    1. Hi Mary, thanks! That’s a *really* warm jacket so I don’t wear it as much in LA, but will include in an outfit post in the near future.

    1. Thanks Lesley! I think there are a lot of ways to work the blue and leopard combo. If the jacket is too much leopard, a scarf or bag might work. Or maybe blue pants with a leopard print shoe…

  14. Hi,

I love the coat.I understand the looking for a leopard coat thing. I’ve been wanting one for about 6 months and was lucky enough to be given a vintage one from 1960 by a friend’s mother. She was even nice enough to include a note of the coat’s history(where and when she bought it) and for how much. Mine is much different in shape than yours, being a swing coat with a large collar and three quarter sleeves.I hope you enjoy your coat as much as I’m enjoying mine. 🙂

  15. Hi Susan,

Hong Kong has finally made it to the lower temps, so I can pull out my leopard coat. Like another Ann up above, I never considered pairing it with cobalt blue, but now thanks to you I just might!

Lovely. I found you via Catherine’s infamous #iwillwearwhatilike! Congrats for being featured!
