Out And About: Dressed For The Theater

dressed for the theater: tweed jacket and leather leggings

Tuesday night we went to see “Amélie, A New Musical” at the Music Center in downtown LA. I wanted to dress up a little bit but still be comfortable, and these leather-blocked leggings (purchased in late 2015) are among the most comfortable I own. I threw on a simple black v-neck sweater (similar here) some chunky faux pearls (several years old) and my tweed jacket. I thought this outfit worked well, and I’d definitely wear again.

We managed to snap this photo in between rain showers. Sorry, didn’t get closeups but I’ll try to get some better shots of the outfit when the weather is more conducive.

The musical itself was fun, not great. I should stipulate that I’m not the biggest fan of musical theater, and have trouble at times hearing the lyrics, so am probably not the most receptive audience. But the performances were quite good, and I loved the staging. Overall, it was entertaining.

One note on blog post scheduling: I have such a backlog of travel-related posts, that I’ve decided to add one more day to my posting schedule. Look for these on Tuesdays.

Do you have a go-to outfit for going to the theater or other events?

  1. I like the look — especially the leather leggings. And I selfishly look forward to your extra Tuesday travel postings.

  2. Love your outfit. I love musicals, but at most Broadway productions and in the Opera House at the Kennedy Center in DC, sound directors set the volume of the orchestra much higher than the vocals, so many in the audience can’t hear the lyrics. This is maddening, especially with ticket prices in the stratosphere.

  3. My go to is a black dress. I prefer dresses to anything else 😉 In the winter, and esp for travel, I love a merino dress! With tights or not, boots or flats, scarves or pearls – definitely my go-to for easy dressing for work or pleasure! (and I just got a short sleeve merino dress – Eileen Fisher on sale at Nordstrom – that I’m excited to have for shoulder seasons. Or, most of winter here in NC!)

  4. I love your outfit for an evening out. Comfy, slightly casual but still a touch of elegance. You nailed it!
I, too, selfishly look forward to an extra post.

  5. Love this outfit Susan, and you’ve inspired me to consider buying faux leather leggings! I’ve done a little research and am leaning toward Lysse’s version. I so enjoy reading your posts – thank you for your inspiration!

  6. Looking for some advice on what to pack for a casual trip to LA in mid February with my oldest best girl friend who needs to get some sun (she lives in Seattle I’m in NY). We’ll be based in Westwood, intend to drive up and down the coast and spending time on the beach, window shopping coastal areas Santa Monica, etc. I’m from the NY and have very little LA experience and I feel at a loss as to how to dress for the climate and the culture. Not planning anything high end or trendy. I’m a 56 and want to feel relaxed but appropriate. Any thoughts West Coasters? I don’t wear dresses, in NY I live in yoga pants or jeans.

    1. Hi Susannah, you’d fit right in here in yoga pants and jeans. 🙂 February can still be pretty cool and wet. We’ve been getting more rain this winter than the last few years, so I’d expect at least a couple of rainy days. You may want to bring one pair of sandals that are comfortable to walk in, as we’ll occasionally get a warm spell. Very few places are really dressy anymore, and “smart casual” will take you just about anywhere. A pair of black pants or jeans, a nice sweater and accessories are fine for most evenings. Interiors here aren’t as heated as on the East Coast. Don’t bother with a heavy winter coat. If it rains, a lightweight shell over a sweater should keep you plenty warm. I’d bring a lighter scarf or two, again, you may have some chilly evenings. Sneakers, ankle boots, loafers would all be fine shoe choices, whatever is comfortable.

      1. Thanks! My friend’s plan is to spend an hour a day actually “on the beach” (if it doesn’t rain!) and I’m working to how to wrap my mind around the transition of beach to town! I guess I can roll up my jeans and walk in the sand 🙂 I suspect my friend is going to have a bikini on but not me 🙂

  7. Susan,

I enjoy reading your posts and your blog to bits!

I’ve viewed this post a couple of times now and I just don’t like it.

The leather leggings especially do nothing for your legs.

You look ‘top heavy’ to me. If you know what I mean?

    1. I have been reading Susan’s postings for the last 12 months and I’m undecided about this look. To me Susan always looks lovely but this is not my favourite outfit. My preference is for more traditional clothing and faux leather leggings are not on my list. Perhaps they’ll grow on me, never say never. Rock on Susan! I love your postings.

  8. I always intend to wear more dresses and heels, but if it’s a rainy day here in Seattle I end up taking the dress off, putting on black pant (from black jeans to eileen fisher ponte to black gabardine, depending on dressiness) slipping on the black flats and being happy. Going to a big “do” Thursday night where I swear I’m wearing a black dress and heels if it kills me.
