Friday Miscellany: Wearing And Watching

evening accessory bundles

I didn’t pack a lot of jewelry for this trip; Napa’s vibe is laid-back, so a lot of glitz feels out of place. “Casual luxe” carries the day (and night). Above a couple of accessory bundles for evening.

Left: bracelet and white turquoise necklace c/o French Kande

grey bead necklace (couple of years old from Ann Lightfoot.)

Right:  necklace from Alexandra Sojfer, Paris (shown in yesterday’s outfit post) |
French Kande pearl bracelet.

During the day, I’ll probably just wear earrings, a watch, and one of the bracelets above.

Entertainment: Parisian Style

Call My Agent (Dix Pour Cent)

We stumbled across this series titled “Call My Agent” on Netflix, and decided to watch, not realizing it was a actually a French series. If you haven’t yet seen this (originally released in France in 2015 with the title Dix Pour Cent) it’s really fun, if a little formulaic at times. Some well-known French actors make guest appearances. What I enjoyed most was seeing a few familiar places in Paris and Parisian “casual office” style across a broad range of ages and personalities. I hope there’s another season in the works!

The Collection

It’s 1947 in Paris. A family-run couture house looks to remake itself and make Paris fashion relevant again after the war. Everyone has secrets. Some may have collaborated with the Germans (it was wartime, after all…). Others are hiding things of a more personal nature. That’s the setting for The Collection, available on Amazon. While it’s more broad and less deft at times than one would hope, it’s a fun, soapy series with plenty of New Look-esque fashion, and glimpses of Paris in the years immediately after the war. The cinematography and photography are gorgeous, and there are some fun period music cues.

Have you discovered any fun series to watch recently?

Bon weekend!

  1. “Plus Belle la Vie” is a hugely popular series in France, set in Marseille. Not my cup of tea, but all my friends watch it.
“Mafiosa” is pretty to watch (except for the violence), set in Corsica.
There’s a new one, with Gerard Depardieu, called “Marseille.” Notice a theme? Series set in the south are popular.

  2. Finally got around to watching Borgen, previously available only on DVDs, now on iTunes, and we are totally hooked. It’s about Denmark’s (fictional) first female prime minister and delves into the political machinations, the media, and the complications of having a family when you’re in that kind of role. Kind of like West Wing. Subtitled, unfortunately, but we got used to that quickly. It’s intelligent and the acting is marvelous.

    1. If you’re up for a War thriller “Nobel” is a Norwegian drama about a soldier who is deployed to Afghanistan. It reminds me a bit of Borgen in that the scandinavian culture comes through in some of the dramatic twists and turns and he returns home and continues to be an operative.

      1. Yes, it was excellent. Another Norwegian series is Occupied – on the same level of excellence.

    2. Loved Borgen so much I purchased the other seasons on DVD. Love these recommendations. Perfect timing for being hoe so much right now.

  3. I’ve been meaning to get Netflix forever but never get around to it. I really must enter this decade like the rest of the world:) Your choices are perfect for Napa. Have a fabulous time!!

  4. Had fun watching Call My Agent, in French with French subtitles, on Netflix — a really great well to work on aural comprehension. I second the recommendation for Borgen. Have you seen The OA yet? Blew me away in the final episode — hard to categorise and not everyone’s cuppa, but. . . .

  5. The series A French Village is a riveting drama about the German occupation of a village near Besancon. It follows the stories of a variety of characters – German sympathizers, members of the Resistance, Nazi soldiers (some sympathetic), teachers and children. It’s in French with English subtitles. My husband and I are on Season 5 and are addicted.

  6. Love your style! And thanks for the entertainment tips too. Just last night I was thinking it was time to find something to watch to help feed my all things French addiction; especially right now, as I’m recovering from the flu. Started watching The Collection this morning, and it’s the perfect antidote. Especially the music!

  7. Thanks so much for these Napa posts. We are headed there in May for the first time. I had suspected the “casual luxe” vibe, but it’s nice to have you confirm it. My current packing challenge is a weekend in NYC this month followed by Napa in May. Thinking about doing all black for NY and then all white/bone for Cali–all in my small under-the-seat carryons. Such a fun challenge! Enjoy your trip. Happy Birthday!

  8. Happy Birthday and thanks for your blog that holds my interest. I’m trying for your style made into my own for my larger size needs. Thanks again…

  9. Love Call My Agent. Kitschy french humor, classic french characters and great scenes of Paris. Marseilles was also excellent in a totally french way: more edgy and sardonic but with interesting characters and the setting is colorful. Netflix has an awesome collection of foreign TV shows. Some of those not mentioned here: Heavy Water Wars, another Norwegian show about the Nazi German occupation of Norway and nuclear weapons; Happy Valley, a British show set in Yorkshire, about a female police sergeant and her life. Good characters but somewhat gruesome stories, so be prepared. Gripping though. Stranger Things from Netflix, something my children got me to watch, is totally different but I found completely entertaining. My husband didn’t like it, due to the weird sci-fi part, but the character development is really good and the kids do a great job. Happy Birthday, by the way.

  10. Thanks for the tip about Call My Agent. I don’t watch much TV, but I love this show. I read just today that season 2 is starting this week in France!
