Casual Vendredi: Beachy

cotton knit hooded knit coat

I’m often asked about what to pack for a visit to Los Angeles, and I always advise that if you’re going to be near the coast to bring a lightweight jacket or cardigan, even in the middle of summer. Near the ocean, breezes often pick up in the afternoon/evening and it can turn chilly quickly. (And don’t get me started on the often frigid indoor temperatures due to the meat-locker-esque air conditioner settings that restaurants and businesses seem to favor here.)

This hooded cotton knit coat from Winser London (gifted) is perfect for our climate! Winser London sent me this coat to try as well as another top I’ll show you in a subsequent post. The first thing I noticed when I opened the box was the gorgeous quality of the fabric. It’s tightly woven but not stiff, and drapes beautifully. It’s soft but substantial, and feels as though it will hold up well over time. The coat is also available in solid navy and “Winser blue.” I’m wearing the Small here. The cut seems to be generous, and I probably could have even gone down another size in this particular piece. I really like that navy contrast detail that adds some lengthening visual interest. The navy and soft white combo has a very nautical, beachy vibe, hence the post title.

Winser London hooded knit coat

Winser London was started by Kim Winser, who has a background in fashion retail at Marks & Spencer, Pringle of Scotland and Aquascutum. She recognized (as many of us have) that there was a dearth of well-made, simple pieces in high quality fabrics that weren’t either too classic or too trendy. Launched in 2013, the line is now offered online in the USA. Winser London manufactures their clothing in small factories near the fabric mills, to save shipping costs and keep quality high and prices affordable. The collections are designed to be easy to coordinate, and to build upon season after season.

tassel necklace, leopard bag, French Kande ring

The Kay and Star leather tassel necklace was a birthday gift from Adrienne (The Rich Life In Wine Country). I love how navy really sets off the turquoise. Thanks again, Adrienne!

Paul Green metallic booties

These peep-toe booties from Paul Green continue to be one of my favorite pairs of shoes. They just add that something extra to an outfit that makes it work. And they are SO freakin’ comfortable!

Bon weekend!

  1. Susan – I love this coat with jeans, otherwise it could be too precious. Beautifully styled. A perfect example of your Susan-ness aesthetic. And the hood…

  2. I think I will check out that website. Love the coat and can think of some ways to include it in my wardrobe.
Thanks for all of your great suggestions!

  3. Susan, like you, I am traveling to Europe five weeks from now. Do you have any concerns? I am feeling a bit nervous today. Hard to ignore current events. I was last there sixteen months ago, but so much has happened. Do we just plow ahead with confidence?

    1. Since I made this comment two days ago, a 50 year-old woman has been stabbed to death by a recently arrived refugee as she was taking photographs of street art in a close in Paris neighborhood; This is exactly what I was planning to do……photograph public art installations! I really don’t know what to think at this point. I’m sure this woman thought she was in no danger. She was stabbed six times, her throat cut. The police could not save her.

      1. Hi Gloria,

According to the news reports I researched based on this comment, the woman was in a suburb of Paris (not the city center), and the attacker was possibly a “homeless” person who objected to her taking pictures of graffiti. Living in a city with lots of homeless people concentrated in some areas, I’ve felt unsafe at times in close proximity to those few who are obviously mentally ill. That said, I couldn’t find a credible source confirming that the attacker was a “refugee.” Details are scarce at this point. Refugee or no, homeless or no, this was a tragedy.

That said, I believe firmly that we cannot let fear win. If we do, then those who would manipulate by terror or intimidation win. I think that it’s more important than ever that we continue to travel and expand our horizons, and engage people in other parts of the world. Bad stuff happens everywhere, including here. (Check out traffic deaths or domestic violence statistics.) Be alert, use discretion, but don’t let an isolated incident deter you from visiting a beautiful and welcoming city.

  4. You look super cute and put-together… I like that you mixed the leopard and the turquoise… BRILLIANT. Oh, and you are so right to recommend girls pack a light weight cardigan. I also like an unlined, leather moto jacket, for the cool nights here in So Cal.

  5. If I got it as a gift it would be great but I’m not paying 30 Pounds for shipping. So I don’t see them offering their product in the USA! Did I miss something?

  6. I bought the Paul Green booties in black three years ago, still love them and wear them all the time. Then two years ago, I purchased them in a metallic, “smoke,” I think. Like most Paul Green shoes, they are so comfortable that they are instantly “go to” shoes. And they last and last! I am so happy to have discovered your blog, similar age and size although I still need office clothes.

  7. Wow – we are so honored to have you wearing one of our necklaces. You have fabulous style. Adrienne is a wonderful person and we love her style too. You ladies are the best.

  8. Glad you have connected to the WinserLondon brand and like it. I agree with you that the fabric is of very high quality. I have pieces from three years ago that are still going strong, despite many washes. I have the same coat/jacket you are wearing in pink. I will be wearing it again shortly as the weather here warms up.

  9. So did anyone find the USA online site for Winser? Love he coat and would buy it but can’t find the USA site where I would hope shipping isn’t exorbitant.
