Step Lively…

Some people just naturally gravitate toward color and love wearing lots of it. I’ve never been one of those people. But each Spring, with the return of sunshine, warmth and longer days, I find myself craving a bit more color in my wardrobe. In past years, I’ve tried adding some bright cardigans or tops to the mix, but find those pieces are the ones I ultimately wear the least. I’m not immune to Spring’s siren call for Something Pretty either, but as with color, it works best for me in small doses. That means accessories: scarves, bags, jewelry and shoes.

I’ve been absolutely giddy about some of the footwear coming out this Spring. Mules and slides are back in a big way, and I’ve been a fan since their last heyday in the 90’s. They’re great for our climate, and those times when it’s not quite warm enough for sandals, or when a sandal feels too casual. (For shoes that don’t flap when you walk, stick to styles with a higher vamp.) This season, it’s all about embellishment…prints, bows and bling. But for those who don’t like mules or slides, there are also some fun, pretty choices in loafers, and even sneakers.

Here’s a floral print loafer, pretty, practical and reasonably priced.

For some styling inspiration, check out Lisa’s “Polished Tomboy” look with patterned Gucci mules. She nails that whole hi-low insouciance thing.

I’ve focused mostly on low-heeled options here, just to show that pretty or even dressy doesn’t have to mean a high heel. What shoe styles are inspiring you this season?

  1. Susan,
As someone who mainly lives in ballet flats, I’m loving the new ‘pretty shoes’.
Heading into Autumn here in Australia – too many lovely choices.

  2. I’m with you. I prefer a wardrobe of mostly neutrals to work as a backdrop for wonderful accessories. I love unusual jewelry — especially things I’ve collected over the years — and shoes with personality. This spring I am looking for some red shoes — maybe ballet flats — to spark up my black Eileen Fisher crop pants. Any tips?

  3. SIGH….. I would love to be able to wear some of these beauties. Guess there’s not enough of us with 11AAA feet to get the manufacturers’ attention.

  4. I’m thoroughly loving the pretty shoes around this spring. You’ve got some great ones here. I haven’t found my mule of choice for spring, but it might be that first one you’re showing.

  5. I’m seeing a great deal of patterned leather here, too, and love it, from the bright flowers to the muted “splotches” of metallics. The mules will not be safe in my city, with subway stairs and many crowds, but I have seen oxfords and other styles with backs. Women who don’t wear prints can enjoy them on their feet!

    1. JavaAndJunket, I’m finding my happy medium is to go minimalist with clothing, but use accessories to add the fun element.

  6. Slippers? Not for me. I am short and love a heel. But very cute for somebody. Lots of choices. Great that you found so many options. Love your style.
