Easing Into A Long Weekend

Everlane Relaxed Linen shirt, a summer favorite. Details at une femme d'un certain age.

Hard to believe we’re already halfway through 2017! Just a few random bits and bobs today. I’ve been doing a lot of “back office” work on the blog the last couple of weeks, techie and administrative stuff mostly. Still, it can be time-consuming.

A Follow Up From Monday’s Linen Post…

I received* this Everlane Relaxed Linen Shirt last week, but didn’t have time to “road test” it before I put together Monday’s post, La Vida Linen. Well, I’ve been wearing it almost daily since, and can give it two thumbs up. It’s a very nice, medium-weight linen. I washed it and threw in the dryer on low heat (as some of you recommended), and it’s maintained a softly rumpled look all week. No hard creases. I really like the cut; it’s relaxed but not boxy. Fits nicely through the shoulders. I’ve worn it both buttoned up as a tunic, and open over a tank top. It’s cut generously. I sized down to a 4 and still have room without it looking too oversized.

And while you’re visiting Everlane, check out their “Choose What You Pay” section for some serious discounts on quality pieces.

Putting My Eating Habits Back On Rails…

I’ve been just a few pounds above my target weight for the last year or so. It’s not a lot, but on my 5’1″ frame, I can tell the difference. After several months of on-again-off-again, half-assed point tracking, I’ve decided to start going to Weight Watchers meetings again, at least every couple of weeks. It makes a big difference in my levels of focus and commitment. I’ve come to think of it like a tune-up, something I do to keep my engine running smoothly.

Weekend Plans…

Jeune homme will be here for the weekend. We’ve seen such a change in him since he moved to the group home a little over a year ago. He’s more relaxed, seems happier, and has less trouble with transitions from one activity to another. He’s also communicating more beyond, “I want X.” Now he’ll point out things he sees as we ride in the car, or try to tell us about something fun he did. “It’s hot today!” seems to be one of his favorite exclamations.

We used to host a big BBQ for the 4th, as the city would hold a fireworks show that we could watch from the park a block away. But they moved the program a few years ago to a location that would require having to drive and deal with traffic and parking to see the display. That kind of took the fun out of it, so now we have a quiet time at home, throw something on the grill and hang out with the dogs. I miss the days when you could have at-home fireworks (Safe And Sane!™), but I certainly understand the dry and dangerous conditions that have led most Southern California cities to ban them.

  1. Hope you enjoy weekend with friends and family!
Good idea to start again with weightwatcher – after 2x cancer(cortison/ chemo and var.other medcine)i had a plus on scale of 40 (!) Kilos – so started ww february 2015 and now need 3 kilos to be goldmember.with 63 years seems a bit harder to lose weight – but the programme is fantastic and i feel good now.

All the best for you – yours Angela

  2. Weight Watchers is a sane program. Healthy, varied, about portion control. Like you said, it’s good for a tuneup.
I love big shirts like your linen example. Cool and classy.

    1. Thanks, Francetaste! Even just the first WW meeting has been worth it; found a good bean salad recipe in one of the pamplets they handed out. 🙂

      1. When I am around my French friends, I realize that I tend to eat more than they do. I am in the normal range of weight for my height, but still, they are thinner. They really practice portion control, while eating a variety of foods. And that’s what WW does so well–provide a reality check on what portions are enough.

      2. Telling you my thought about that WW bean salad: it’s great and it keeps well in the fridge.
My WW is a group of very positive women. Very grateful for them.

  3. Funny…I just explored rejoining Weight Watchers yesterday! I lost 15 pounds with WW about that many years ago, and this winter put on about 10 lbs back. I, too, have had that on again off again experience trying to lose on my own, so back to WW I go!

So glad to hear how well your son is doing in his new setting.

    1. I really like their current program. I find it easier to follow than some of the earlier versions. Good luck!

  4. Ha! I was on the Weight Watchers site very recently trying to decide what to do. Online membership or go back to a meeting, which are not conveniently located. Wonder if the online version is as motivating. The hubs is now retired, so a new life change for us. On we go! P.s. The linen shirt is wonderful!

    1. I’m lucky that we have a center just about 10 minutes away, so it’s easy for me to get to meetings. But it’s nice that they have options, so everyone can find what works best for them.

  5. I am happy that Jeune Homme has made the progress you describe. I work with special needs high school kids and can understand that this change in him is spirit lifting! Have a happy Fourth. I am looking forward to the 14th for obvious reasons, and will admit to fussing more over decor and food , and background music in my kitchen (!) on THAT day.

    1. Linda, I just want to thank you for the work you do with special needs kids. We can never express enough gratitude for these folks in our son’s life who have made such a difference.

  6. I’ve been a liftetime WW member since 1986. The meetings are no longer convenient, but I still go once a month to weight in. (it keeps me as a free member with all the tools). I’m 5’0, so I hear you about every pound making a difference. I’m glad things are working our for your son. I work with special education in the high school.

    1. Linda, thanks so much for your work with special needs teenagers! And I think keeping up a once-a-month meeting habit once I hit my goal is a good idea.

  7. It sounds like your son has made tremendous progress – such good news!
I have the Everlane linen shirt dress and agree about the weight of their linen. It doesn’t wrinkle like the lighter weight linens do.

  8. Actually sounds like a perfectly wonderful way to spend the holiday weekend and I’m so happy to hear how well your son is adjusting. I know this must make you feel so relieved as a mother.
I’ll be spending mine in some linen and a family backyard BBQ, then off to the local park for fireworks.
*little side note-I had no idea you were also on the petite side, now I really need to meet you in person. Have a wonderful weekend beautiful lady.

  9. I’ve been wondering how your son was making out in his new living situation. So glad that it has worked out for him, and for you.
Hope you have a wonderful holiday weekend, Susan. We’re heading off into the wilderness to go camping on Monday. I am soooo hoping that the daily rain and occasional hail storms do NOT follow us!

  10. I’m enjoying my last day in France with a pastry I justvwolfed down, a bag of my new guilty pleasure, Socca Chips, and an elaborate meal tonight. I’ve consumed far too much rose’, had kidneys four times, more rose’, countless Kir Royals, cheese, bread and anything else that passed my eyes! I won’t dare get on the scale upon my return but I will be studying all my WW material and going back to counting points!!!!!
