Outfit: A Lightweight Jacket For Summer Into Fall

style blogger Susan B. wears a copper lightweight jacket from Eileen Fisher, jeans, and leopard mules.

Transitional Season Dressing: The Lightweight Jacket

Yes, I know we’re smack in the middle of summer, but “pre-fall” is a very short retail season and often has some of the best pieces. So if I waited until September to show this to you, it would likely be gone.

Wearing: jacket (also in Plus) | tee (similar) | necklace | bracelet | jeans (similar) | shoes

A longer, lightweight jacket that’s Not Black has become my wardrobe Holy Grail. In Southern California, it’s a multi-season piece. I really like the color; it’s rich and makes a statement. It’s a bit brighter than the wool jacket I showed you last week. The fabric is a cotton blend with a rumpled texture and a slight sheen. It’s washable, too!

I’m 5’1″ and wearing the XS.

I really like the blue-greens in these stone beads against the “paprika” color of the jacket. These are both from French Kande from prior seasons, and still available. You can select from a choice of medallions on the necklace. I wear this bracelet often.

When I last checked, these shoes were still available, although in limited sizes. But if you’re interested and they’re out of your size, do keep checking back. Returns Happen.

  1. Love the outfit! The colors, the accessories and the animal print shoes all look fabulous. That jacket is my dream jacket…just cannot justify the price tho. Would you ever consider doing a splurge/save feature where you show a jacket like this and then something similar at a lower price point? I have no question the jacket is worth the price but cannot justify it for myself right now.

  2. I noticed last night that it was dark so much earlier. I thought, already??? So I refuse to look at the coat on principle (OK, I peeked and it’s very cute, and now I’m back to reveling in summer). But those slides are wonderful!

  3. Love everything about this coat…except for the rumpled look. Some, like yourself, can pull this off, but I would look like I just picked it up off the floor. Great color, and great transitional look…hope to see more of it this color this fall.

  4. I love the idea of pairing “spice” colors with black . . . or gray . . or navy . . . or brown. Now the hunt begins!

  5. This is such a great transitional color, and autumn color! Would love to see a round up of other items in this color family. I have searched a few websites for color names sounding like this and came up with a few things, but randomly. Lovely outfit!

  6. Yes, wonderful jacket. When I think about something like this on me, as a lower contrast person, I’d have to wear a gray shirt, or a faded blue one or a faded something in the spice tone range.

  7. I have essentially the same comment as Nancy. I love the jacket but the $358 price tag is way too high. Alternatives perhaps?

  8. Hi Susan! I hope you can answer a question. When I click through to the French Kande necklace, the page states that it is 34″ long, but the necklace you’re wearing doesn’t look that long to me. Is 34″ the length you’re wearing? Or are you wearing the 28″ length? Thank you in advance!

    1. Hi Linda, my apologies for the delay in getting back to you. I’ve been out of town and just got home and was able to check on this. It looks like I may have linked to the wrong piece, d’oh! The one I’m wearing IS 28″. Link HERE.

    1. That’s what I like about it, in addition to the color: it’s a variation on the French “blouse de travail” or worker’s smock – very stylish. Meanwhile I’m wondering how you achieve that hair color, or is it natural?

      1. Hi Jeanne, that’s what I like about the jacket too! My hair color is “chemically enhanced.” My natural color is a very drab “dishwater blonde” with some grey. If it were more silver I’d go natural, but am not there yet.

  9. I stumbled on a similar EF spice jacket at a regional department store at a deep discount. It’s more of a heavy linen and will carry me through November. Thanks for showing how to style it! Early fall separates are such workhorses. And they’re usually on sale when I’m just starting to think about cooler temps.

  10. What types of pieces am I always on the lookout for? French marinière (or Breton) shirts. I finally sprang for Saint James via J. Crew in both long-sleeve and sleeveless versions, hoping for better quality. I just can’t get enough of the blue/white stripes.

  11. Can anyone tell me if there is a type of horizontal striped shirt that I could wear,(I am usually size XL) that? I know…many say wear what you like, but I don’t want to wear something that makes me look wider…is there a type of stripe be it colors, width of stripe, etc I should be on the lookout for? If you can link to a picture that would be so helpful. Thanks in advance

    1. Hi Nancy, it’s my experience that stripes that are narrower and with more space between tend to be more flattering. Picking colors that have lower contrast between stripes and background may help too. Here are a couple of ideas: http://bit.ly/2tT2EiJ (long sleeve) and http://bit.ly/2tTg26J (short sleeve).

      1. Thank you so much. You are so good about replying and helping us with our fashion adventures and challenges. I may take the risk of a striped tee if I can find one I feel comfortable in and wear it under a long vest or jacket ( If I can ever find one I like and can afford…the endless quest, ha)

        1. Narrow stripes can be more attractive than solids for a variety of body types. I’m … er… busty …. (like G-cup), short and rather plumper than pseu, but not plus-sized. I’m wearing a simple summer dress in narrow grey and black stripes, but I also have red and black ones. I shy away from white and navy or white and black.

And the same kind of stripes can be attractive on very slim, “boyish” types.

  12. Love the jacket and the reasonable price point! Anyone could pull off this rumpled fabric because it’s “intentional”. Keeps it casual and fun.

  13. I had this same jacket a few years ago and wore it until it wore out. I had the light color, bone, or something like that. I just bought it again in that color. I always loved it. This is a better color for me than the orange. Thanks for finding it again! Love it.

    1. Oh Greetje, here in Chicago I was thinking the same thing! I looked at the jacket and thought, “Oh that’s adorable, but IT HAS NO BUTTONS. That will never do.”
