Parsing The Fall Shoe Trends

I’ve come to regard trends as opportunities to try something new, when a trend appeals to me and when it feels like a good fit with my style. Shoes and accessories can be a fun way to test drive trends and refresh our wardrobes without a huge commitment.

The 70’s continue to have a big influence on fashion, from silhouettes to materials and finishes. I see a lot of what I call Luxe Bohemian style in this fall’s collections. Even if your wardrobe is more classic or modern though, some of these footwear styles can fit right in. (Though not for wet weather.)

Velvet

Velvet is an instant shot of Glam. If your style runs a bit more rock-n-roll, try a pair of velvet ankle boots.

Velvet smoking slippers are a classic choice. I love the fleur-de-lis embroidery on these!

Embroidery And Brocade

Anne Klein floral brocade ankle boots. Brocade is one of my favorite fall shoe trends! Details at une femme d'un certain age.

Brocade doesn’t have to be fussy, and embroidery isn’t just for the Boho Gals. Both can have a place in a modern wardrobe. Above: mid-heel floral brocade Chelsea boot. I have a real soft spot for Asian-inspired floral prints like this one.

I don’t need another pair of mules, but the hummingbird embroidery on these is so cool…

Silver

Silver footwear is one of those trends that I think can work well with a variety of styles. These silver chelsea boots are now in my closet, awaiting cooler weather.

A skimmer style always looks sleek and modern to me.

When it comes to metallics, I prefer more muted finishes. I think they’re easier to wear than the shiny, mirror finishes, but you may prefer the latter. I tend to wear only one metallic piece at a time, not including jewelry. And don’t be afraid to mix your metals! You can wear gold jewelry with silver-toned metallics and visa versa.

Hi-yo Silver!

  1. I love the velvet trend. Anything textural or embroidered pleases me. I cannot wear anything with pointy toes due to the dreaded bunion. I am on the hunt for a pair of velvet loafers that I can wear.
