On The Beauty Beat: Eyes And Lips

Berry lip shades for fall. Details at une femme d'un certain age.

It’s Berry Season…

Ok, so we’re starting with the lips. Most days I’m all about the “My Lips But Better” color. But I do like to change things up a little with a change of season. I’ve traded in my beige-y pinks of Spring and Summer for some wearable berry shades. (My definition of berry: a little deeper and more sophisticated than pink, but not as dark as plum.)

  1. Sheer. Though it looks purple in the tube, this Lip Glow in Berry goes on as a slightly deeper shade of MLBB. Those of you with cooler and/or darker coloring may find this is your perfect “no lipstick lipstick.” It feels and wears like a balm.
  2. Bright. “Berry Squeeze,” is a nice raspberry color. It actually looks redder in the tube than on the lips. Satin finish. If you want to go for impact, pair with Maraschino lip liner. For a warmer or more neutral look, line and fill with Neapolitan lip liner first, then slick this over. (Makeover Workshop lip liners are fabulous. Stay put for hours, and prevent color bleeding.)
  3. In-Between. Again, don’t let the color in the tube scare you. This color (Calla Lily) goes on as a semi-sheer, warm berry color. The formula is very moisturizing and lasts for hours.

The Eyes Have It…

Beauty Box: eye defining makeup collection from Makeover Workshop. Details at une femme d'un certain age.

Even if you are a makeup minimalist like me, framing and defining the eyes makes SUCH a difference. Brian is offering a special Beauty Box for eyes that includes my very favorite brow pencil, an eyeliner, eyelash curler and a bonus mascara. And check out his latest how-to video co-starring yours truly, along with the gorgeous Sandra Sallin. (Don’t worry, I did not poke myself in the eye with that mascara wand!)

Do you change your lip color or makeup with the seasons?

  1. I have had difficulty finding the right eyebrow makeup…I am fair skinned with blond hair and many are just too dark or too auburn, etc…also pencils often do not cover those stubborn grey hairs I have. Right now using a eyebrow mascara from Benefit…Any suggestions of some products to try…I don’t believe the one above is avail. in a store to find the right color etc so would prefer not to just order on line without trying first. Thanks in advance.

    1. Sonya Kashuk’s line at Target has a great light colored eyebrow “mascara’ that might work for you. I am blond with fair skin and her lighter one is just the right color for emphasis without making me look like a scary clown. Also covers MY stubborn grey brows!

    2. Glossier Boy Brow in the blonde color is wonderful. I also have light hair and brows, and this is the perfect color for me, and the product itself is excellent. Unfortunately you do have to order it online, but they take returns.

  2. i tend to gravitate towards cooler colors in the fall, but there’s frequently the temptation to mimic the beautiful colors of the autumn foliage, so I will go back and forth between berry and warm colors, as I am neutral and can pull both off. As for eyebrows, I have discovered a wonderful brow-mascara, and it’s mind-blowingly cheap at Ulta. It’s the Essence brand, and they have a light/taupy shade, and slightly darker one. For those prices, you can afford both to experiment with.

  3. My summer face is a bit different than my winter face for sure! With my fake tan I can go a bit darker when I wear foundation–ai just bought the Fenty foundation and 170–Light/cool is a perfect match. Fenty Lip Bomb is surprisingly flattering on me! I’m in love with the line!!!

  4. Years ago, an Armani makeup artist told me to use eyeshadow with a stiff bristle brush for filling in my brows. There is a wide range of eyeshadow colors. I have used this method ever since.

  5. I bought the Chantecaille lipstick next to Calla Lilly yesterday. Calla Lilly was sold out, and the one I bought is very close. Thanks for the head’s up. Their formula is really great too, very moisturizing.

  6. Merle Norman makes a “Blonde” eyebrow pencil that us good for my fair skin/blonde coloring. The studio I go to is great when it comes to trying on for color and sending samples home with me to try before I buy – which they promote at their store. They don’t have samples for every product but still have tons of samples available.
