Gift Guide: For The Traveler

My Gift Guide for the travelers on your list. Details at une femme d'un certain age.

Some years I’m really on top of my holiday gift shopping. This is not one of those years. I’m just now wrapping my head around putting lists together and coming up with ideas. But one thing that doesn’t change from year to year: I like to give gifts that I think people will actually use, and that won’t end up in a land fill by February. So my gift ideas often tend to skew toward the practical rather than the fanciful.

Gift Guide: The Traveler

Whether the traveler on your gift list is a Frequent Flyer, an Annual Vacationer, or a Roadtrip Warrior, here are a few ideas to make their journeys easier and more comfortable.

  1. Silk sleep mask. I’m a recent convert to sleep masks. I find them helpful not only for getting better quality sleep during long flights, but also for blocking unavoidable ambient light in lodgings. This silk mask is comfortable even for sensitive skin, and it’s washable too.
  2. Monogrammed leather luggage tag (similar). Ditch those flimsy paper or plastic luggage tags. Go for a bright color that will help them easily spot their bag on the luggage carousel.
  3. Noise-canceling earbuds. Listen to music or movies while reducing ambient noise.
  4. Makeup travel brush set. These short-handled brushes come with their own travel case, but can also fit into compact cosmetic bags.
  5. Compression socks (similar here and here). These help prevent swelling during long flights, and provide support for long days of sightseeing. Why not have fun with color and pattern?
  6. EMME toiletries bag. This has been one of my top recommendations for a few years running. It’s such a well-designed toiletries bag, holds quite a bit and hangs to save space in a small bathroom.
  7. Elegant, lightweight luggage. This line from Bric’s has the look of an old-school steamer trunk, but weighs in at under 6 pounds for the carry-on size.

  1. I’ll second your suggestion for the Emme toiletries bad. Santa brought mine 2 years ago, and I don’t knwo how I got along without it. Thanks for the suggestion.

  2. Good list. A number of items I need to purchase. I bought that Emme bag and would you believe I lost it at some hotel? No idea which one. I need to buy a new one. I also like those cute compression socks. Always enjoy your posts.

  3. Thank you. I wore compression socks on a recent trip to Madeira. They really work! Love the suitcase. Truly enjoy your site.

  4. Just back from BA Argentina….a two week trip. Emme bag was great…. so great I gave one to my husband and all his essentials fit inside. On several trips I put my nice jewelry in the small bag.
I don’t really use the plastic containers provided.
I have some others I like. But the bag itself is awesome.
Great for travel. Thanks Susan for the suggestion a long time ago.

  5. Just got my black crepe top with glutter sleeves from J Crew. Sooo cute! And so easy ! Thank you again for showing it.
