Comfortable Style

Luxury must be comfortable, otherwise it is not luxury. — Coco Chanel

I’ve been adamant for some time that comfort is non-negotiable for me. I won’t wear anything that pinches, binds, constricts, or is stiff or scratchy. I’m also adamant that one can be comfortable and still look polished and presentable. I believe that one of the best ways we can practice self-care is by dressing in clothing that fits, is comfortable, and reflects our style.

This post is sponsored by Soft Surroundings and ShopStyle. I was provided a gift card to purchase the items I’m wearing. All ideas and opinions are my own.

Soft Surroundings believes that taking care of ourselves will help us to better take care of our families and communities, and live our best, most fulfilling lives. When they asked me to partner on this post, I knew they offered lots of products for the home, beauty and wellness, and loungewear. But I didn’t realize what an extensive selection of clothing, shoes and accessories they have. I was delighted to see that they don’t skimp on “special” sizes either. Petites, Women’s and Tall sizes are all well represented.

The Details

Soft Surroundings coatigan with faux fur collar. Details at une femme d'un certain age.

I love faux fur, but find that it can sometimes be a little scratchy. The collar on this St. Moritz sweater coat is so soft! Soft Surroundings gives all of their pieces a softness rating between 1 and 3. This sweater coat is rated at 2.

The Everyday Earrings are a mix of gold and silver metals, and have a bold visual impact without a lot of weight. I’ve worn them for hours at a time, and even forgotten that I had them on.

Soft Surroundings Riva bracelet. Details at une femme d'un certain age.

The Riva bracelet is a multi-strand leather bracelet that will layer nicely with my other jewelry.

Soft Surroundings sweater coat and Amazing Pants. Details at une femme d'un certain age.

I’m always keeping an eye out for Little Black Pants candidates, and was so impressed with these Amazing Black Pants. The fabric is a substantial stretch twill that looks polished, but is as comfortable as a knit. These are a pull-on style with a thick waistband that doesn’t twist. The cut is a slim straight leg, which is a nice alternative to skinny fit. They seem to run true-to-size. I’m wearing Petite Small.

The top is the Valentina Zip Sweater. It wasn’t offered in Petites, so I’m wearing the Extra Small. The fabric is a textured knit that some might find a little bit sheer without a camisole underneath.

Soft Surroundings Meridia booties. Details at une femme d'un certain age.

When I saw and ordered these booties online, I initially thought they were studded. But they’re actually two layers of leather: a laser cut lattice pattern over metallic, which is also pretty cool. (I’ve folded the pant hems up a little bit so you can better see the shape of the boots.) They are true-to-size, and maybe a little bit narrow. These are the first pair of open-sided boots I’ve tried that my heels don’t slip out of when I walk, another big plus. They’re on the distressed side, and would work very well with a Boho style.

Thanks again to Soft Surroundings for these #LiveSoft pieces!

  1. Love this outfit…looks really nice on you. The sweater coat is beautiful.
I’m also a femme of a certain age and lived in Paris half my life… enjoy your blog
    Thx

  2. Do you think these would travel well? I would love to try the Eileen Fisher pants you love so much, but as an elementary school librarian who sits on the floor with little kids, I am not sure I want to spend that much..would these be a good alternative???
Happy Thanksgiving and I am thankful for this blog…such a pleasure everyday!

    1. Happy Thanksgiving to you too, Carol! The fabric on these pants is a bit heavier than the EF stretch crepe, which makes them probably a little bit warmer. They take a little less than a day to completely line dry. That said, I think they would make good travel pants and would be comfortable enough to sit on the floor in.

  3. I recently found this store online and unbelievably in my city. The items I have purchased are comfy, stylish and made well. And complimented on! Good to read your blog about them. As retired school librarian I would expect these pants to be a better purchase than E.F.

  4. You look fabulous! I like Soft Surroundings for things that are just a little bit unusual. I purchased the La Vie en Rose cardigan and I love it.

  5. That faux fur collar really looks pretty up around your face. i’ve received the Soft Surroundings catalogue, but never purchased from it. Will reconsider after this post.

  6. I am glad Soft Surroundings reached out to you. I have purchased several items of clothing from them in the last couple of years and have been happy with my purchases. I have not been brave enough to try their pants because fit is always an issue with pants. As an example, E F pants don’t work for me because of how they cut the rise. I will now be brave enough to try the pants from Soft Surroundings. Thank you.

  7. The tops at Soft Surroundings are what I will buy: they tend to be more of the tunic type and always a bit unusual! Yes, fit is true to size. Their mix is unusual and I do think you have to look very carefully at exactly how the clothes will fit…

  8. I love the SS metros. They look like leggings on the site, but they fit me like slim-leg pants, don’t stretch out in the knees during the day, have a lot of “give” but a smooth fit at the waist, and are very flattering with a tunic or longer top. Much of their line, even in petites, seems to run way too long on my 4′ 11″ frame, but the Metros are great.

  9. I ordered items from Soft Surroundings and sent back 2 out 3. The items look better in the pictures than in reality. I no longer order clothing from catalogues, in general. I need to touch, feel and try on the clothes before deciding to buy. Too much trial and error, not worth my time.

  10. You look like a million bucks in this outfit. Did you happen to see the NYT article about the remake of the play “Network” in London? The “Downton Abbey” star Michelle Dockery is in it, as the hard-driving producer. The costume director put her in flats and pants because being powerful requires being comfortable. Think about it!

  11. You look fabulous in this outfit! I agree wholeheartedly with the opinions expressed in your first paragraph. Comfort is an absolute essential for me too.

  12. I discovered Soft Surrounding this summer while in Jackson, MS. LOVED IT! I just ordered something for my mother from them and another bottle of their L perfume for me. The shops are so well done and the clothes are very well made! So glad to see you bring them into your blog.

  13. Hi Susan! I am so aligned with your way of thinking and comfortable clothes! I must wear clothes that are not only stylish but comfortable as well, and many companies are adhering to this! LOVE the faux fur collared coat, the color is lovely on you. I recently received a pair of black pants, similar to yours and they are a staple. Such pretty jewelry! Have a Happy Holiday!
    jess xx

i would love to have you at the Turning Heads Tuesday linkup sometime 🙂

  14. I have purchased clothes and jewelry from Soft Surroundings for several years and am very happy with most of their items. Tops, pants, the velvet silk bathrobe for my daughter and daughter-in-law. They love it!! Beautiful jewelry as well.

  15. I really like soft surroundings and is my go to for interesting tops and jewelry. Their items are expensive so I typically shop the sales and outlet. Well made stuff.
