Channeling My Inner Rocker

With our kitchen out of commission, we took a short “staycation” over the weekend and went out to dinner both nights. Saturday night’s dinner was in Beverly Hills, so we decided to go over a little bit early and take a walk around Rodeo Drive to look at the lights and decorations. Evenings have been getting cooler so it seemed like a good opportunity to wear something velvet.

I always get a bit of a “Rocker” vibe from this black velvet duster, so decided to play that up a little bit with this outfit. The duster is an Eileen Fisher piece from last year, and I realized I’ve never featured it on the blog before. I believe she’s offered it for the last 2-3 years. It always sells out quickly, and this year seems to be no different. This shawl collar jacket is similar in style, but shorter. I’ve linked to some other velvet duster options in the widget below.

And to keep my neck warm, I added this new Black silk/cashmere wrap with scattered Swarovski crystals (gifted). It’s a wonderful piece…warm but very lightweight, and those crystals really catch the light! It’s also available in Cream and Navy.

I didn’t feel like I needed to add much jewelry other than some simple earrings.

And I thought these boots completed the look and fit in with the Rocker theme very nicely!

We did quite a bit of walking, and they were comfortable throughout.

Le Monsieur snapped these outfit photos, and was a very good sport about it.

Do you have an outfit or a wardrobe item that channels your inner Rocker?

  1. A tuxedo jacket and jeans with flat black boots are my formula for feeling pulled together but not
    too dressed up.
I love velvet but will not wear if not tailored and fitted. Blazers are great, but
anything ‘duster’ on my 5’11” frame screams ‘bathrobe’ back at me
when I look in the mirror. I did have a pair of Maison Margiela
black velvet palazzo pants which I wore to pieces. Always paired
with a tight fitting top and wide belt to balance it all out.

    1. The J Peterman catalog has a long velvet jacket which is tailored like a blazer, but longer. Sort of a “Westworld” vibe. I’ve never ordered anything from them before, but am tempted, as I love the idea, but have trouble with the bathrobe problem you describe….

    1. I just checked this jacket out. Love it! Those pleats that it up a notch. Wish I had somewhere to wear it.
I love it when fellow readers make suggestions, as we are all different body types that love Susan’s style and travel tips/pics.

  2. Susan, I love this outfit. I love anything in the rocker realm. A great graphic tee, my 501s or black jeans, a black jacket from moto to tux, black boots and minimal jewelry creates a rocker look for me.

It is my FAVORITE style of all. Debbie Harry is my #1 fashion muse.

  3. Love this on you, Sue. Especially those boots. I’d love to find something velvet that I could pull out year after year. I looked today, but nothing seemed to scream… “buy me and keep me for years and years.” The years and years part is mandatory for me since I’d probably only wear it once or twice a season.
My inner rocker chick piece …my black leather trousers, which I’ve worn to death…year after year:)

  4. I love this outfit!! I have a purple velvet evening coat that I’ve had for years and still find ways to wear it. I also have a black velvet blazer that I can wear with everything from jeans to dressier trousers. I love that you’ve added a sparkly scarf – I find that black velvet always needs something – I usually add a broach, but now you’ve given me the idea to add a scarf instead.

  5. Dope! I’m with Ann, but I did think, Joan Jett. You look hot. Next time try a deep lipstick and you might not come home till really late 😉

  6. My rocker accessory is a black leather swing coat. i have a velvet coat similar to yours and my office holiday dinner is tomorrow, hmm…

  7. I did it – first time ever – I bought the black studded suede boots and they are awesome! Comfortable, stylish and cool! I get lots of compliments and they have just the right edge for this 50-something city slicker (Washington, D.C.). Thank you for the posts and keep the ideas coming!
