On The Beauty Beat: Old Faves And New Finds

Clarins Double Serum, one of my skincare faves. Details at une femme d'un certain age.

Time To Restock…

A few of you have asked about my skincare routine. It does tend to shift with the seasons or as I try new products I like, but one product I’ve used consistently for a few years now is this serum. I think it has improved the texture of my skin, and I notice a difference if I stop using it. It was reformulated last fall, but still has the separate oil- and water-based ingredients that blend when dispensed. (No mineral oil.)

styling treatment that works well with fine hair. Details at une femme d'un certain age.

This is another favorite beauty product that I’ve now been using regularly for a few years. I have very fine, thin hair so have tended to shy away from styling products, as they can weigh my hair down, or make it look greasy. This treatment does just the opposite! It actually makes my hair look and feel fuller without stiffness. And I think it helps my hair look clean longer. After I shampoo and towel dry, I rub a pea-sized amount in my hands and rub through my hair, then comb through.

Fresh brown sugar scrub, one of my favorite beauty products. Details at une femme d'un certain age.

Our climate is mostly dry so I use this sugar scrub year round, but I find it especially helpful in the winter. It smooths, moisturizes and smells heavenly. It works quite well on rough knees and elbows. It’s a bit gooey, so I keep a small spoon in the shower to scoop it out.

lip plumping treatmentI’ve always had lips that tend to chap and flake, but since using this lip treatment I’ve seen a major improvement. They feel less dry, are far less prone to flaking, and look smoother and plumper when I use this regularly (a small drop 2-3 times per day).

super-moisturizing body lotion. Details at une femme d'un certain age.

I finally managed to get in for a manicure/pedicure late last week, and the nail technician recommended applying this moisturizer to my feet at night. Great stuff, really does the job, and paraben-free!

Cailyn O! round makeup brush. Details at une femme d'un certain age.My friend Karen recently texted me raving about this makeup brush, which she found while on vacation in Hawaii. She says it’s the best for applying makeup, and really delivers an airbrushed finish. (She knows and loves makeup, so I trust her.) I’ve ordered one to try, will report back!

  1. Really enjoyed reading about these products, Susan. My long time favourite Clarins product is Super Restorative Tinted Cream, SPF 20, Litchi shade. It’s a moisturizer/ foundation, very light and makes my skin feel like cashmere. I have fair skin and med. dark hair and this product gives my face a subtle glow. Will try to access both the Weleda cream for cracked hands and Living Proof for fine hair due to the extreme cold here in Canada. Please keep reviewing beauty products. Any more recommendations? Thanks!

    1. Hello Elizabeth, I use the Weleda Skin Food at night with white cotton gloves – it’s a very heavy, ointment-like cream, so the gloves keep my sheets clean!

  2. Thanks Susan- your skin looks so soft and creamy on your blog. I have been using Stemology eye serum for a few months and notice my eyelids have actually firmed up a bit. I’m looking forward to trying the lip treatment. It has been so dry here in Southern California this year. I enjoy reading your blog. Oh and I’ve been wearing a beret since your Paris trip-fun!

  3. I recently discovered the Fresh line. After reading about Seaberry Oil in a magazine I ordered that product online from Nordstrom, as my local store does not carry them. However, I was in Sephora with my granddaughter one day and noticed you can try many Fresh samples there. I really like, and use, some of the masks, the Seaberry Face Oil was lovely and effective for helping to heal the latter stages of my last Rosacea flare-up; Black Tea Corset Cream; Black Tea Firming Overnight Mask; for lots of moisture if your skin is very dry try tiny bits of Rose Deep Hydration Face Cream (which I use more of in the arid air of Colorado). An added, unexpected plus was the Seaberry Oil vastly improved my fragile, ridged and dry nails (I’m 70) after I applied it to my skin for about a week. The Black Tea Age-Delay Infusion is the first toner type product I have ever been able to put on my skin without reacting to the astringents normally used. I have sensitive skin; currently non active stage 1 Rosacea; and many perfumes/astringents/acids bother me. I find the natural scents (ex: rose) used by Fresh actually seem restorative for me. Of course everyone’s skin is different, as is their current level of Rosacea activity (if one has it), and their sensitivity to perfume, so always choose what works for you. I was lucky enough to have an opportunity to receive a bag of nice sized samples with my first two orders of Fresh from Nordstrom, and that introduced me to other products in their line.

  4. I also have used the Clarins double serum for years and love its effects. So happy to hear it’s working well for you, too, Susan.
