Croc’d

Brahmin large Duxbury bag in black. Details at une femme d'un certain age.

My friend Karen has amazing style and always looks adorable. When we met up on Friday, she was toting this Brahmin satchel, which I know she’s had for a few years. It’s softened up nicely, but still looks beautiful. And as I was holding her bag while she was trying on jackets, I noted how light it was for a larger, leather bag.

I’ve been a fan of Brahmin bags for several years. The quality is very good for the price, most styles are not heavy, and they have excellent interior organization. The croc-embossed leather is very durable, and I think especially in some colors, looks more expensive than it is.

Classic, With Interest

I tend to prefer the simpler, classic styles. In my opinion that croc embossing adds nice texture and interest on its own, and doesn’t need to be mucked up with a lot of details.

The “Duxbury” is one of my favorite styles. This is the smaller version of Karen’s bag. It’s available in several colors. I think this soft blue would be a nice way to lighten up a dark winter wardrobe, and work well for Spring and Summer too. The Pecan color is also very nice.

This little crossbody would be a good day bag for travel or just running errands at home.

If you like something a little more structured and ladylike, this is a nice choice (also available in black and Pecan). There’s also a shoulder strap.

I love a bowling bag style! This chestnut color is very rich looking.

This Brahmin embroidered bag looks like something you'd find at Gucci, but at a fraction of the price. Details at une femme d'un certain age.

And if your taste runs to the more whimsical and of-the-moment, this looks like something you’d find at Gucci, but at a fraction of the price! (Also available here.)

Have you owned any Brahmin bags? What style is your favorite?

These are very beautiful. I also love the look of crocodile, but definitely in the form of embossed leather and not the real thing (is that even legal?).
The shape of these is really practical–flat without being so flat as to not hold things like eyeglass case or wallet; not so big as to be bulky or get heavy (the bigger the bag the more you tend to carry); a cross-body strap to keep hands free and also better for your back.
    Thanks for the tip!

Oh boy I think I’m in love with the Duxbury…The price is surprising for what looks like high end quality. Also the brown bowling bag reminds me of a 1940’s style my Nan had, very beautiful too. Thanks for the intro Susan, I’d never heard of this brand before. Hmmm on second thoughts perhaps I should not be thanking you 😉 heehee

I love their bags! I have four of them! I have one many years old that looks like a wallet and is a crossbody. My favorite style is a crossbody which is great for hands-free shopping. I have two black, one pecan, and one multi color. If you take care of them and keep them in their clothbags, they look good forever. I also bought the cream from Brahmin which enriches the leather.

I have at least 6 Brahmins! They are absolutely wonderful! My every day bag now is the little square crossbody pictured in a fabulous irridescent blue/green/ grey/purple that looks great with any color in that spectrum! I love it!

I own several Brahmin bags – have always loved them! They are beautifully made, hold up well, are priced very reasonably, come in tons of colors and textures, and are hand-made in Massachusetts!

I too am a fan of Brahmin bags. I like their small cross body but have a few larger styles as well. The prints do get gimmicky I think but I love some of their soft greys and blues as well as the classic colors. Great style and value at the price! Macy’s carries them and they are often on sale there.

I just bought my first Brahmin last night ;). I’ve looked at them for years, but the shiny finish is somewhat of a deterrent as I don’t usually prefer shiny (not that I don’t think it’s lovely!). I wanted another clutch with “punch”, like the Clare V. leopard, so I ordered the Kayla in “carnation”. I’m looking forward to using it.

The sales associate who once sold me a Brahmin told me they are popular with young attorneys because they have enough structure to sit nicely on a table or floor and enough polish/professionalism/organization for the courtroom, and yet they are stylish enough to go out to a bar with jeans. I tend to buy slouchy handbags but I am always drawn to this brand, too.

And a really good time to buy Brahmin is when Dillards is having their almost quarterly additional 40% off already reduced merchandise. I have bought all four of my Brahmins that way. Admittedly the selection isn’t as great as just walking in and buying anything you want, but I do have a small Duxbury that I purchased on sale, and I love it for its sturdiness and the zipper that spans the entire top making access easy. My Duxbury is pecan with a swath of a very pretty coral down the center.

I have a nice red Brahmin that I love. We have a great outlet shop in West Palm Beach, FL.

I was not familiar with Brahmin, but that little brown crossbody is wonderful. I don’t like heavy bags or excess decoration, either.

I own several of them. For the price the quality is amazing. I had a woman carrying a LV and she asked my about my handbag. It’s nice to see a post for a quality more affordable brand.

I have several Brahmin bags. I came across them about 10 years ago when we stumbled on their outlet store on the way to Cape Cod. They hold up very well.

I’m crazy about Brahmin bags. The organization is perfect and I love the pecan color … a true neutral that goes with everything. I have an Asher tote from several years ago that is three leathers: leopard, pecan and black, that I use every winter, and a Crane Asher tote (black and white) from last spring that sold out almost immediately. I prefer a purse that opens from the top (want a zipper, though, not just a magnet or tab closure). I dislike a big flap that gets in the way when I’m opening and closing it st cash registers. The medium Asher is not too large and heavy but can still fit an IPad and whatever you need. I do believe, though, that some Brahmins are now made overseas.

I have only one. It was a Christmas gift from my husband last year. I really like it for its quality but also because it is NOT HEAVY. Like Linda above, I do carry my Ipad mini in it.
