Monday Miscellany: Bathrobes And More
While doing laundry last week, I had to finally concede: after eight years (or so), it’s time to replace my bathrobe.
Shopping…
My current robe is from Bedhead, and I love it, though it’s now quite faded and threadbare. It’s a nice cotton flannel, which works for me pretty much year-round. I wanted to find something similar, in a natural fiber and fun print. Above: I really like this toile print, and it’s on sale.
But this leopard with pink piping is fun too…
Plaid is always classic, and I like that velvet trim for the winter months.
These striped cotton kimono robes can be monogrammed, and are on sale!
If you prefer something longer, here’s a kimono style in a cotton-silk blend.
If you prefer something longer AND warmer, this one’s organic terry cotton (also available in white).
While I’m at it, my winter pajamas are also looking a bit sad and could stand to be replaced. I’ve been wearing Soma Cool Nights pajamas for years and love them. This set shouldn’t clash too much with one of those printed bathrobes…
Reading…
When I met up with Janice in Paris, she gave me this book which she’d just finished. It’s fascinating, and if you’re interested in color or art or design, I’d highly recommend it.
Watching…
We went to see “The Favourite” last week. I really enjoyed it, though be warned, it’s not your standard period drama. There are some absurdist elements (the dance sequences) and dialog that feels very modern. Still, I thought it worked, and that the performances of all three women (Olivia Colman, Rachel Weisz, and Emma Stone) were outstanding. Loyalty, treachery, scheming, and power struggles…none of these women are passive pawns. The costumes are fabulous, too.
And we’re counting down the days until the next season of “Call My Agent” on Netflix. The French name of the series is Dix pour cent (10%), referring to the agent’s cut. Quirky characters, frequent shots of Paris, what’s not to love?
Happy New Year!!

I adore my terrycloth bathrobe (makes me feel like I’m at a spa) but it IS too hot for summer. The leopard robe is fun.
I really love these cotton knit PJ pants that “breathe” , but they are so so old, they are going to literally fall apart one day….I get so warm…not hot flashes, just higher body temperature…and for some reason not as in love with model pjs as many others are. Not even sure what I am looking for…would that be labeled organic cotton? I want a soft knit that gets even softer after multiple washings (similar to a t-shirt)…not a shirt type of fabric. Any suggestions ?
For my “hot nights” (every night) I buy men’s XL cotton boxers from JCrew which I wear with a cotton rack top or thin cotton tee shirt. Not the most glamorous, but cool.
I’m OK with a terry bathrobe for immediately after bath, but for lounging around pre-bed or in the morning I like to go with something snappier -jammie pants and a sweater/fleece. Nobody but the models in the catalog looks good in a big bulky bathrobe.
Amen. My constant thought over the years has been “When will they ever start making bathrobes that don’t tie, making everyone who is not tall and thin look like a sack of potatoes tied in the middle!!”. I have looked long and hard for these over the years with no luck. Still looking.
I don’t like a tie either, except for a terry robe right after a bath. I prefer a zip front, but many of them are really geriatric looking. So I have been wearing Natori zip caftans for the last several years. I currently have a lightweight, silky one and also a heavier weight for days when it’s really cold. Sometimes the sleeves are too flared, and I have them altered. Not cheap, but the quality is excellent and I love them!
I agree. Robes that tie do not look good on me. Additionally, when I sit wearing that robe style, I experience a gap that runs from the hip to the bottom of the robe. As a result, they don’t fulfill their mission. A robe that closed at the shoulder would be more attractive and avoid a gap. This would be similar to a Chinese style of closure.
I love the punjammies from Sudara , a wonderful on- line shop that helps women in India support themselves. They produce both cotton and rayon in gorgeous prints , Capri, long and short pants, matching robes and T-shirts . I’ve worn the Capri pants in the summer while travelling and receive constant compliments. Add the matching robe and , voila, an outfit!
I have one pair of their flannel pajama bottoms – love them, but the flannel is rare:(.
After reading about Soma Cool Nights items on your blog, I bought a nightgown for a recent river cruise. Loved it! I came home and bought the matching robe. A pajama set is next on my list. Having had a long marketing career, it has been interesting to see how blogs like yours are now major players in this space.
Thank you for cold-weather options for northern climates. I need two robes for cold and warm weather and like the variety of switching every few months.
I must have 6 robes in rotation…cozy, hygge winter months make variety a necessity for me. I also have a vintage 1950’s satin brocade men’s smoking jacket I like to bust out every once in a while. Love, love, love your blog. Thanks for keeping it up with all the great tips and sources! Happy New Year!
The pajamas and nightgowns from Garnet Hill are all I have worn for almost ten years. Cotton, perfect length and fit, nice prints and it is probably my favorite on line retailer!
Thank you! I hadn’t looked at Garnet Hill in years as they didn’t ship to Canada (although they are close by in NH!) but they do now. I’d been looking for midi skirts, which have become very scarce in the shops here. They have several, incluing an EF knit at deep discount.
I rarely wear bathrobes or dressing gowns; I tend to wear soft athletic bottoms and tops when around the house alone. I also like knit nightgowns.
Yes the best for pjs both summer knits and winter flannels!
I adore my sweatshirt velour robe from UGG. It’s warm & cozy.
I’m also a nightgown person with favorites from Natori & Eileen West.
Meanwhile I’d still stand up and applaud any company willing to make flannel pajama bottoms that aren’t either a) studded with “cute” motifs or b) plaid. I have to accept that I’m an outlier and nobody makes clothes for extreme outliers;).
I’d be another, Lisa. I like very plain garments and hate anything cutesy, and like plaids only for scarves/mufflers.
same here.
We are going to The Favourite tonight to celebrate New Year’s Eve, then go to our friends to play games and eat and drink. All the Beat for 2019!
Natori Shangri La robes – have them in every color! Comfy and elegant. Perfect for a So Cal climate.
Thank you for your hard work and good advice. I really enjoy reading your blog and always learn something. Happy New Year!
I love Natori cotton robes. So smooth, soft, light, comfortable and well made. I have two: a short one which is Josie by Natori and a long one, simply Natori. Another plus-I’m petite and the full length one doesn’t trail on the floor. And I never heard of Soma before. Since they’re currently having a sale I just purchased a pair of pajamas to check out.
Thank you, Susan, for the Dix pour cent Netflix recommendation! This looks like a fun way to improve my French!
Have a Happy New Year!!

I love the plain, shawl-collared seersucker robes from Vermont Country Store.
I looked at their offering again. While alas there are many mumsy, dowdy garments, there are also quite a few classics in natural fibres; something to celebrate.
Unfortunately I don’t think these neighbours ship to Canada yet. I’ll write to confirm.
My internal temperature is always set on hot. I discovered Soma’s cool nights PJs a few years ago and love them. I’ll never wear anything else! And I can’t stand bathrobes – too hot, too long, too tangly, so I found a long knit cardigan from Target that I wear over my pajamas. I feel modest enough if I have to answer the door but I don’t have on too much fabric. It’s also great as a bed jacket on cold nights.
For the last few years I’ve gotten more and more depressed about ever finding nightgowns or robes that I like. I live in the north, so all of these possibilities look like summer robes. I need something warmer. I’ve never found a cotton terry robe to be either warm or attractive. In addition I find that robes and gowns are now mostly around knee length, rather than longer. For years I bought Eileen West flannel nightgowns at Nordstroms. They longer make all cotton flannel. They’re added rayon. They are less warm and pill quicker. And they are mid-calf length rather than longer. This might make me take up sewing again! ;-/
