Espadrilles, Mr Whippy’s, Arnold Palmer’s, the garden sun umbrella, stripy deck chairs, picnics in Hyde Park – all but a dream this stinky summer.
Love your collection – mine (in an English Summer) would be a glass of Pimms. Here in Australia it would be a barbecue at the the beach…….X
Mojitos, boybeaters, those glasses that sit in straw holders, watermelon-colour lipstick.
Love this – what a fantastic selection of photos. My favourites are a straw bag and sunglasses. Oh and my bicycle!
Your comments make my day.
I adore you!!!

Mine: the window box with geraniums, like you’d find spilling generously from homes in Europe. Adirondack chairs in bright colors, out in a meadow. & gazpacho, served up in an oversized white bowl.
Fabulous selection of images…Audrey as always so beautiful.
Have a lovely week.

All these pictures make me happy!
Italian ices, lightweight flirty skirts, sandals, coral lipstick & coral nailpolish, sangria. Your photos put a big smile on my face.
Beautiful photos. My favorite summertime classics are garden tomatoes, more garden tomatoes and fresh strawberries.
For several of your pictures, I picked the wrong thing as the classic, thus showing that our style icons have multiple levels of cool! For example, in the Audrey picture, I thought it was the checked capris and ballet flats; for Sophia, the scarf, etc. i hate to sound like an old codger, but I really doubt that in 50 years our granddaughters will be admiring pictures of the Kardashians and Snooki as style icons.
Since I live where summer is miserably hot, we wear as little as possible (a true challenge for the middle-aged among us). I’ll say flip flops of every style & color, straw bags, sundresses, lots & lots of iced tea with lemon. And hibiscus flowers, there’s a pretty orange one outside my window right now.
It all goes around and comes back…doesn’t it! In Texas, two classics with cool would be Dairy Queen and Sonic with the waiters and waitresses on roller skates. Movies on the side of buildings downtown with the audience in the grass. Flip flops of every color and design and bling (for men and women) and Sperry Topsiders!
The smell of Coppertone….
Strawberries and ice cream, naturally.
Here in the Bay Area “summer cool” means fog, wind, and 55° high temperatures. The July issue of San Francisco magazine has a style tutorial for our cold-to-colder summers: http://www.modernluxury.com/san-francisco/story/fogwear-laid-bare
Nancy, I remember the ad campaign the Giants ran in the late 80’s showing fans bundled up in furs and parkas to go to summer games at the ‘stick! But truthfully, it’s one of the things I love about SF.
Ah yes–the Giants awarded the “Croix de Candlestick” to those rugged patrons who survived the cold. http://www.croixdestick.com/?page_id=10
I’m miserable every summer until September, when the fog finally lifts and we get some actual warmth. Still an L.A. girl after all these years!
I thought you were going to say, “dogs.”
Which are classics, of course.
Nice to see those pix of MM as a happy, denim wearing, hair blowing young women.
She looks anything but fake happy.
Maybe the most natural photos of her I’ve ever seen.
Thanks for including this American Cool Classic!!

Just bought a wicker basket for my seven-speed cruiser bike. Now I can pretend I’m Audrey Hepburn! I love these pictures and this site.
J’adore c’est site!
Cécile
Wide brimmed hats in the sun, bing cherries, and my rose garden. Lovely photos!
Audrey is, to me, the quintessential classic – perhaps because she is also the One and Only. Utterly Unique.
Madras, espadrilles (though I call them alpargatas), cherries, slushy horchata
Great choices… definitely classic and definitely cool… xv
Americans love iced tea. Didi love iced tea. This is the beginning of a great friendship! And I just love Sophia Loren!
Ice cream, linen, and rum drinks!
Summer in Paris is less traffic, more time to meet up with friends, lunch in the Tuileries, not wearing a coat, the thick green linden trees seen from my Palais Royal window, the long twilight, flowers on the balcony. Summer in Blois is cycling along the river and past the Loire châteaux, tending the garden, barbecues and cold rosé wine.
And since this is my first summer in a long time in California, I’m missing the classic clambake on Martha’s Vineyard….
Boating on a lake, lying on the beach, swimming in the ocean, fresh Maine lobsters steamed with butter, grilling, sitting on the deck overlooking a vast green lawn and quiet brook, dining outside…
