power player

This Helmut Lang tuxedo-esque jacket has been in heavy rotation lately. It’s become a real power player in my wardrobe: dresses up or down, those shoulders add some structure, and I think the cut is flattering. It works with jeans, trousers, or a pencil skirt. Here I’ve paired with a white linen tee and some black slim jeans. This is an easy workday outfit.

None of these pieces are actually Petite sizes, which is unusual for me. I cheated on the pants hems below, and folded them under instead of cuffing. I think I may get them hemmed to this length.

  1. I love that jacket and it must feel dreamy to wear as well. I’d never have known you cuffed these trousers inside. I bought my first fitted blazer in years the other day and I love it with jeans and sneakers. I usually wear loose things but this structure is a welcome change.

  2. This just says ‘effortless chic’ to me:) That is one beautiful blazer and I understand how it would be a workhorse for you. I do have a couple of Metalicus jackets that are definite ‘go any where’ power players in my wardrobe. You look stunning.

  3. You are right– the cut of that jacket is extremely flattering on you. Those tuxedo-ish lapels perfectly proportioned to your size and so jaunty! I don’t think I’ve noticed that bracelet before. Love the texture. It looks sort of honeycomb-like or rows of little softened squares? Love it.

  4. Yes, that jacket has powers for sure! I love your reply on my FB page about your pale skin – you exude class, Une Femme. xox

  5. Love the jacket. I just bought a similar one from Theory in white. Can’t wait to start wearing it. I like the length of those pants with the shoes. Cuffing under and taping, then pressing, is what we did back in the day when there was no time for hemming. You know, in the distant past ..on a hot date night….or something.

  6. My sister and I are great fans of your blog and your style. We do feel that the sleeves on your white T are bringing the look down a bit. Sleeveless T might have been better or at least tight sleeves that could be pushed up.
    Just a suggestion.

    1. Hi Michelle, thanks! I debated about those sleeves; decided they added a certain insouciance. I’ll try it the other way next time. 🙂

  7. Good call folding them under. I find cuffing any pants, shortens the look of my already short legs.
You look very chic in this outfit. I can see why this jacket would be getting a lot of wear!

  8. Yes I have several power players in my wardrobe. My boyfriend jeans for example. And, just like you, a black blazer. It’s a great way to instantly add some chic to an outfit. You really look like a power player yourself in this outfit. Love the sleeves of shirt looking out from under the rolled up ones of the blazer.

  9. Beautiful look, and I love how you accessorized it. You’ve inspired me to look for a black jacket to add to my wardrobe.

    1. Hi Andrea, thanks! The tee is organic linen jersey (which I prefer to cotton as it travels well), very well made and holds up well too. It’s become one of my warm weather wardrobe staples. I’ve been quite pleased overall with the quality of these. Keep an eye out for sales too.

  10. Wow, I just found you through Who What Wear… atlast I can see what real women wear and not just the supermodel 18 year olds which are not a good reference for what is appropriate for a 40 plus women.
You look really great and your blog is an inspiration, thank you
