I’ve tried pricier lip balms, but for keeping lips soft and preventing chapping, I’ve not found anything better than Rosebud Salve. You can also use on your cuticles in a pinch. $6 at Sephora.

For elbows, heels, seriously dry or chapped skin, try Aquaphor. It’s like a superconcentrated Vaseline but without the smell. I never travel to arid or wintery locations without this. $5.09 at Drugstore.com. (Also good for diaper rash, chafing.)

  1. I LOVE Aquaphor (and Cerave). I have very dry lips and most balms produce a chapped lip with a waxy-grease layer on top. Aquaphor seems to actually hold moisture in and ward off the peeling. Kiehl’s Everest balm, Burts Bees, Vaseline, nothing else works as well on me.

  2. Love Rosebud lip balm, though haven’t seen it over here for a while – the retro tin is cute too. I’m using Kiehl’s mint lip balm at the moment – a gift, which is OK but possibly a bit too glossy for my forty-something lips.

  3. My favorite budget skincare product is Cerave lotion. I learned about it from Paula Begoun’s website. Each member of my family has some. It’s that good.

  4. Rosebud salve is a life-saver! I put a tin in everyone’s Xmas stocking this year.

And Carmex is a stinkier close second, if I can’t find Rosebud. (Carmex is also great for speeding up healing of little scrapes, burns, and bruises.)

  5. True confession money saver…

After recently paying my daughter’s sorority dues and spring break deposit, there were not enough pennies left in the ol’ wallet to buy my pricey anti-aging skin care.

To get by until payday, I resorted to using my Curel hand lotion on my face. And guess what? People have been commenting on how good my skin looks! Even my husband noticed with this rather clumsy comment, “What are you doing differently? When you smile, the lines don’t go down so far in to your cheeks!”

Pay day has come and gone, and I am still patting on the Curel! 🙂
