J.Crew Leopard Scarf, $59.50

If you’ve been longing for a gorgeous lightweight leopard print scarf but have been hesitating to fork over eight HUNDRED and sixty clams for the Stephen Sprouse version from Louis Vuitton, this silk/wool/cashmere number from J.Crew should scratch that itch nicely. (And you can always buy some fabric paint at the craft store if you feel the need for a neon pink logo scrawled across one end.)

I know it’s summer here in the Norther Hemisphere and just the word “cashmere” probably makes your damp forehead explode, but the fabric on this is wonderfully soft and light, and you’re going to want it come fall, and by then it will be long gone.  Trust me on this.

  1. That scarf is gorgeous, although as you say, we in the tropical climates may start to perspire at the very thought of a scarf. Several years ago I bought a silk velvet leopard print scarf (similar to this style, but not as long), because I saw it in a catalog and was smitten. I have actually gotten to wear it a few times, most recently when I went to Michigan in February (another difficult style moment, since after years in Texas I don’t have a lot of cold–nay, frigid–weather clothes. And it was for a funeral, so I couldn’t just throw on jeans and sweaters.)

BTW, I clicked on your “blast from the past” thumbnail that was appearing at the bottom of your post. That was my past too: dresses with full skirts and Peter Pan collars, little white socks and black patent Mary Jane shoes. I also had the same Barbie wardrobe and canopy bed that you had! I suspect there’s a direct correlation between fashion-loving middle aged women, and girls who had the early model Barbies. Those of us who had Barbies when they dressed elegantly, developed an appreciation for the beautiful outfits. Remember that red velvet flaredcoat with the white satin lining, and the matching strapless dress underneath? I would kill for that outfit, as long as it came with a suitable figure, and someplace to wear it!

  2. vicki – yes, the fabric is very nice at that price point!

Patti – depending on where you live, this might work even before December. The weave of the fabric is very light and open.

Pam – true, Texas isn’t very cashmere-friendly! Does it get cool there in the winter, though?

The Style Crone – isn’t this a great leopard, though? You have some really gorgeous leopard pieces.

Big Little Wolf – yes, actually I like this one better!

  3. That’s Not My Age – good plan!

hostess – oh yes, with camel pants and a white blouse, I can picture it now.

Susan Tiner – I think it’s so great that you’re making scarves! That way you can get the exact fabric, shape and size you want.

LuxeBytes – this one’s worth pouncing on, for sure.

RoseAG – for some of us, leopard is NEVER past its prime. 😀

Jill Ann – you may be right about the Barbies. The clothing I so often am attracted to is from that era, and in similar styles.

This scarf is actually very light and the fabric has an open weave, but even so…not for Texas, at least not right now.

  4. Ouch. Nothing says “old lady” more than this scarf–which is fine, but I get the feeling that’s not the message any of you want to convey.

  5. It looks beautiful!! I am going out and about today and just might have to stop into J Crew!! I often wished I lived in a “cashmere friendly” climate!!

  6. Thank you! I have been looking for this, and I ordered it right away. Of course I had to add the nude suede cece flats and the bronzed avocado scarf too.

If you have never worn JCrew flats, you might look at the cece flats. I don’t like flats usually but I love these, they have a little bit of a built in wedge that you don’t see but gives you a little lift. Thanks!!

  7. Anonymous, I so disagree with you and JCrew isn’t usually known for their “old lady” style. But to each their own.

Just curious why you thought it was necessary to post this on this lovely lady’s blog.

  8. It’s very pretty, but my skin has zero tolerance for yellow tones, so I’m making my own from a yard of lightweight leopard print silk with only brown and black and cream tones.

  9. I find “old lady” an ageist term, proffered from the very safe screen of anonymnity. This woman of nearly 63 would wear it; great spotting, Pseu.

  10. Thanks for the heads up; this has been on my wish list for ages!

    Hooray, a holiday weekend. Enjoy!

  11. Is leopard past it’s prime?

How do you know that you won’t suddenly look like last year next fall when it’s time to get it out?

If one’s strategy is to update accessories to help major items weather several seasons then maybe passing on this in favor of whatever is hot for fall would be a better move.

  12. Julianne – fabulous! Please do let us know how you like it. I haven’t tried their flats, but will have a look. And thanks for your support!

Duchesse – you’re right, it is ageist. But glad you like the scarf!

Tiffany – oh they don’t? What a shame. I know some J.Crew pieces are now available from net-a-porter.

  13. Agree 100% with Duchesse. This is a gorgeous scarf – I’d buy it this second if J Crew shipped o/s.

  14. I waited too long to order the leopard print scarf from Talbot’s last fall and it sold out. I’ve been kicking myself ever since. When I saw the photo of the J.Crew scarf on your blog, I stopped reading, clicked over, and ordered it. Thanks so much for the post. I would have missed out on this one if not for you.
As for it being “old lady”, oh honey, no; it’s a classic. A woman of any age can wear a leopard print scarf. I was sporting one when I was a sweet young thing of twenty!

  15. I bought this scarf right when I saw it – it may be difficult to tell on-line, but in person this is a great print for gals with more olive-toned complexions. Some other leopard prints are a little too orangey.

Completely agree with Pseu on this; the fabric is great. It’s perfectly suitable for a cooler summer night and will easily transition into fall. In the spring, I wore it with a fitted denim jacket and my short trench and felt like I was in a Fellini movie.

Age is a state of mind, IMO – it’s all about how you rock it! 🙂

  16. oooh – I bought this scarf in the spring and have worn it a bunch before it got hot. Love it. Lovely weave.

I saw this scarf paired with a navy cashmere sweater on a J. Crew mannequin and it looked so chic.

Leopard is always fashionable. Just look at all the fashion magazines’ fall issues.

  17. I’m another 63-year-old lady who’d love to wear it. I don’t understand how anyone could say that it’s “old lady”. I’ve seen young women wearing scarves like this.
