wear now / wear later (and on sale now)

v-neck cardigan

The Labor Day weekend used to be Summer’s Last Blast, but with schools now starting back up in August, it’s lost some of that wistful significance. I remember how we savored these last few days of staying out late, swimming after dark, hiding from younger (or older) siblings in secret backyard forts, eating the homemade cookies we hadn’t sold at our card-table roadside stand, speculating about what our new teachers would be like and who would be in our classes. Summer wasn’t over yet, but fall was nibbling around the edges with cool evenings that sent us back inside digging through drawers for sweaters that had been tucked away months before.

Now you can’t throw a rock this weekend without hitting a sale, but mixed in with all of the summer items on clearance, you can find a some good get-a-jump-on-fall pieces. That sweater above, for example. It’s an easy merino cardigan from J.Crew, light enough now to throw over shoulders when evenings turn cool, but will also work well as a middle layer under a coat or jacket come November. I like the blue, but also the jade green. The shorter length is good for wearing with this season’s fuller skirts.

olive chinos

I really love these “Sunday slim chinos” also from J.Crew, available in hillside green (a lovely deep olive) and several other colors. Available in regular, petite and tall sizes. Wear now with a tee or linen shirt, later with your favorite sweater. Here’s the sale part: get 30% off your J.Crew order of $125 or more with code GETSHOPPING.

If you’ve ever shivered through a movie in an overly air-conditioned theater, you may have wished you’d had a lightweight scarf like this one:

lightweight scarf

Wear as a wrap now, later keep the chill off your neck underneath your coat. Other colors available too.

two tone watch

Watches are pretty seasonless. If you’ve been looking to replace or update your watch, this statement “slim runway” style from Michael Kors is 50% off. (I have the all-gold version and have been quite pleased with it.)

classic riding boot

A classic riding boot on sale? Yes, please!

long plus-size cardigan

This bouclé cardigan is soft and SO cute. Wear now with a tee, later with a turtleneck. Much more on clearance at Nordstrom, here.

If you have any travel coming up and need luggage, this blue Lipault Paris 4-wheel carry-on is 30% off at Shopbop.

How are you spending the long weekend? Any fun plans?

  1. The jade green would definitely be my choice. I love burgundy too, but that “dark wine” is a bit too murky; I’d like it to be a bit redder.

Here is a cartoon about something you’ve touched on before: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/globe-debate/editorial-cartoons-for-september-2015/article26123093/ I see people texting while driving, walking or cycling all the time, and the other day saw a young man texting on a skateboard!

Perhaps a picnic this weekend: weather lovely up here.

  2. Loving those olive trousers. It’s my favorite neutral for fall/winter. I don’t wear a watch anymore (cellphone junkie) but that’s a lovely one. xox

  3. You always write so beautifully. We have a busy weekend with family. The air was VERY chilly this morning at about 4 AM–our bedroom window was open. I’ve gotten used to the hot muggy Honolulu weather!

  4. I love the blue cardigan…just bought a pullover in that color last weekend at Talbot’s. And a Nordstrom’s Rack opened here in Charleston 2 days ago… Today is my birthday, so I’ m going to go check it out and perhaps buy myself a treat!

  5. I just purchased the Lipault 22in carryon from your link. Can’t wait to use it on my trip to Portugal and France next month!

  6. Have just found your blog, and am eternally grateful! I’m almost 65, don’t color my hair, apple-shaped, an Eileen Fisher devotee, and complete Francophile. We should be best friends.

  7. The watch is a stunner! Funny thing though, I am in a non-wearing-watch phase. Funny how we go through accessory phases. (That would be a fun article.) Do you think the scarf would actually provide necessary warmth in the chilled theaters? I freeze in a theater and definitely need something that works like a down jacket. 😉

I notice that Nordstroms is having a sale again, similar to the big one a few months ago where I had an item in my cart and missed purchasing it by a day (I snoozed). There it stayed until yesterday when I went back to it and it was on sale again – 40% off – an early Christmas- shopping satisfying purchase.

    1. Geesh, notice all the fun in my comment? That’s what 3 margaritas and too little sleep gets you. 😀 I hope you have enjoyed a wonderful holiday weekend.

  8. I just found your site thanks to a mention in another blog. I enjoying going through and looking at all your blog offers. I like the idea of some additional outfits. It is refreshing to see someone who is not 24 giving OTD ideas. It is like over the last few years I have forgotten how to dress myself in anything other than black pants and a top.
