Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Cream Shadow

For the longest time, I’d abandoned eye shadow, and couldn’t be bothered. Either it didn’t last long enough to make the effort to apply worthwhile, or it shifted, settling into my creases. Using eyeshadow “primers” didn’t help (and the ones I tried often made my lids look as rough as a lava field, certainly not the intention!). I read a recommendation a while back for the matte versions of the Bobbi Brown cream shadows (I veer away from any shadows now with frost or sparkle) and recently gave it a road test. Sold!

This shadow when applied with the fingertips goes on fairly sheer and subtle (I’m using color “Cement” which is a light taupe) and stays put all day. Doesn’t shift, doesn’t migrate where you don’t want it. It makes the skin look smoother and more even. I apply from the lash line up to a bit above the crease. Most of the colors in this line seem to be lighter and subtle, great for “le no makeup look.”

Do you use eyeshadow? Have any favorite eyeshadows?  Have you tried this one, and what did you think?

  1. Gave up eyeshadow too. Will say that I find both Bobbi Brown and Laura Mercier fall too far in the yellows camp usually, while Chanel and Giorgio Armani and NARS tend to have shades in my skin tone. Does anyone else find that to be the case? Or am I just doing a bad job of purchasing?

  2. I have worn BB’s Cement and a number of her other creme shadows for quite some time. I am 62. Boone is a great base and goes well under the eyebrow area The cremes are fantastic, as is her gel liner. And, surprisingly, some of the shimmer powders actually give a little pop without creasing. Check out the book Makeup Forever, a guide to makeup for ladies with mature skin. Lots of guidelines and actual product recommendations for the issues of creasing, overdoing, etc.

  3. hmmm. I wear mascara that comes off with soap and water because it’s fairly water resistant but doesn’t smudge. But now my eyeliner smudges after long wear. I was considering
regular liquid liner, which is what I wear, over primer. Instead of searching for waterproof eyeliner. But now you have discouraged me. 😀

I like teal blue and teal green darkish irridescent shadow but haven’t worn it in a long time. Will have to try again and see what I think. The brownish shadow look is not for me.

  4. I use this too, in Sand. It is fabulous at staying on, but also at keeping my eyeliner in place, if I follow the cream shadow with dark brown eyeshadow applied along the lashline with a straight brush. Subtler than liquid eyeliner and it makes my eyes look bigger.

  5. I buy mostly BB makeup and find her foundations to be my favorites. I will try the cream shadow. I think one trick is to NOT get your base layer of moisturizer On your eyelids before applying the shadow. I find primers to be a crock in general. BB skin care during winter is just wonderful. The serums and moisturizers and face oil are all perfect for dryness. I really like the gel cleanser in a pot too. Smells fab and dissolves every little speck of makeup.

  6. Thank you for the reminder about this item–I put a pot of a lighter, flesh color into my makeup bag a while back, but continued to use shadows. I’m wanting a change and this cream shadow feels so good on the eyes.

  7. I’ll just say I’ve been a BB fan for years and have a number of tried and true products from her line. The cream shadow is a winner. “Bone” takes out eyelid discoloration. I use “Sand Dollar” as well although it has a little shimmer, it’s very subtle, and helps green/gray eyes pop.

  8. I gave up eye shadow for the same reasons you did. I will give this one a try, it’s looks and sounds great.

  9. I am an avowed Dior and Chanel user for the eyes. (Love, love, love.)

However, a few months back I discovered Bobbi Brown lip glosses. Adore them.

Wonderful for those of us whose lips dry out easily, and a gorgeous range of shades.

  10. BB is the very best. I have Dr Hauschka and Aveda powders as well but nothing, nothing compares to BB’s Cement, Malt, and the long-gone Suede

  11. @Lisa,
Yes – same for me. I almost always buy Chanel or Giorgio Armani. BB has a lot of yellow in everything I find.

  12. Matte cream shadow– That looks like exactly what I’ve been searching for! I have some powder-gel shadows that I love (Chanel) but they are more shimmery than I like for all-over the eyelid. And I’ve been hesitant to use them with a powder base. I will definitely put this BB shadow on my shopping list.

I used to love eyeshadow primers when I had very oily skin. Now my skin is more normalized (and even a little dry, in the winter), and I find that primers look cakey. Luckily, I don’t have a huge problem with creasing. But I have noticed that my Urban Decay matte powder and my Chanel gel-powder shadows crease much less than the shimmery powders from Lancome and NYX which I wore all day yesterday.

  13. Day to day I don’t wear eye shadow, but when I do, I pat on some Estee Lauder eye shadow base and then a lash to brow overall color like Laura Mercier cashmere, followed by a little liner and mascara. Or I might do the base + morning dew + an accent color at the corners blended up into the crease like a fawn color I got at Chanel or LM celestial. Some have glitter, but I use a light touch and a lot of blending. I’ve found that with the eye shadow base, the colors go on softer. I have deep set eyes and not much lid “real estate” so I would only use 2 colors at the most. Also like the Clinique mascara for lower lashes – doesn’t smear but comes off easily with makeup remover.

  14. This is the best… I have just started using it too and love it… So funny you should mention it… Great minds… xv

  15. I like Mac Painterly which is also a matte cream taupe shadow that is excellent as a base or a alone.

  16. Well this is exciting. As you know I always take heed of your recommendations as they all seem to work for me too and I have exactly the same problem with eyeshadow. Will definitely try this one out – thank you!! X

  17. BB Cement is one of my favorite eyeshadows in her cream formula. It’s such an easy color to wear and does a great job at evening out skin tone. If you like Cement, you might want to check out Sand Dollar (which Kathleen recommended). It’s sold with BB’s matte cream shadows, but it has the tiniest amount of shimmer. As a Light Summer, that one should look wonderful on you. EL also makes a great cream shadow in the color Cappuccino.

I do wear eyeshadow almost every day, even if I’m just brushing my Jane Iredale powder over my lids. I enjoy the simplicity of the creams, but I really love the Chantecaille ‘Shine’ formula. It’s outstanding for over-40 lids, especially lids that are starting to resemble crumpled tissue paper and are developing a hood. Good stuff.

  18. My post disappeared, but here’s the gist: Cement is a dreary name for a very pretty eyeshadow. I don’t wear eyeshadow because I figure no one can see it behind my glasses — am I wrong about this?

  19. I use “Shore” and love it – will try the other shades mentioned. I am cursed with eyes that are very much like Anna Magnani (Italian actress)- dark eyes, dark circles, etc. So,my goal is to minimize attention to them – focus is more on my lips –and yet want to present a polished appearance.

  20. Thanks for the recommendation I am struggling with the changes needed in make up as my skin changes in my 40s. Will give bb a try
