rainy days and fridays…

leopard scarf, skinny jeans

Here’s what I wore on our wettest day this week. Between some technical issues with my camera equipment (now resolved) and the weather, I’ve been relegated to hallway selfies. Rain, rain, I won’t complain. We need this rain so badly and I’m welcoming El Ninõ with open arms. (Though there is the ever-present downside in LA of mudslides and flooding, and I am very sympathetic to those impacted.)

Though I looks here as though I’m wearing a lot of black, the sweater is navy and the jeans dark indigo. The boots are several years old from Etienne Aigner, and still winter stalwarts.

My week started off on a high note with an impromptu power breakfast with the fabulous Sandra Sallin and @Mrs_Badinage .

Mrs B is visiting from Scotland. She’s quite lovely but very camera-shy. 🙂 We met at The Ivy, an LA landmark and frequent celebrity haunt, though we were there early enough to have the place pretty much to ourselves. The floral arrangements were knockouts.

It’s been all downhill from there. Today the house will be heat-treated to rid the rafters of any remaining termites. Oh, the Glamour.

I feel a major closet purge coming on. More on this Monday, and I’ll have a proper outfit post next week if the weather cooperates.

Bon weekend!

  1. Love this outfit on you and the rain has been a blessing (and sometimes a curse with the freeway accidents and the mudslides)! That French Kande tassel necklace on you is very cool. I just received two pieces of FK jewelry a couple days ago–LOVE them!

  2. Hi Susan, great outfit for today and glad ya’ll are getting rain and…..you get to wear your rain boots! I want to ask you about earrings. I notice you wear beautiful thin hoops a lot. I have real short thin hair also and I love the hoops, but I find a more structured, solid earring seems to enhance the short hair, and takes away the look I get sometimes of flat head. What are your thoughts.maybe you could do a comparison post so I could see the look on someone other than me. Love your blog and I take so many tips from you. Thank you!! Stay safe in the deluge!

  3. Really like that layered look with the white tee peeking out underneath. I’m liking dark blue these days; it’s kinder on my face than black. Enjoy the rain.

  4. The older I get, (62 now) the more I want to own LESS.When I lived in Aix-enProvence as a student in the mid-seventies, I had a very limited wardrobe (and in fact, most French women do). It has never be as easy to get dressed in the morning as it was then. If I got bored with it, I’d buy scarves, jewelry or a different nail polish. In photos of those days, I always looked chic. Now I find myself with too much in my closet. I probably wear only 25% of it on a regular basis. That said, your outfit is really cute, but how to the leather boots do in the rain? I usually slip on some rubber Hunters, and carry a pair of those wonderful Tieks ballet flats in my bag. Hope you have a good weekend!

  5. I am really curious how you go about your closet purge. Please post all the details. I am bad about hanging on to “good” pieces that I never wear, you know “just is case”. Wondering about your thoughts on what, if anything you save.

  6. I am really enjoying your blog! It is helping me stream line what i need for my post work, Calif casual life. Glad to hear you chose heat over all the other non chemical termite options. I did “the university” tests on this while working at a UC campus 70 miles east of you.

  7. Wish I were your size … I’d take all your purge items :o)
Ines de la Fressange for Uniqlo may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but her new collection comes out on January 21st, and I’m getting ready to dive in.

  8. I would also love to see a play by play of your closet purge. I do it regularly and find it very therapeutic! I use the “four piles” method: Keep, Donate, Trash, Tailor/DryClean. I have a big pile of Eileen Fisher pieces that no longer suit me or my new career that calls for more casual clothes. I’m getting ready to drop them off for the “Green Eileen” program that resells gently used EF pieces to benefit women’s programs. Even though some of these pieces were expensive (even when bought on sale) and are perfectly wearable, they are taking up valuable closet and psychic space. I get tired of the routine of taking them off the hanger, trying them on, not feeling myself at my best in them, and then putting them back in the closet, ruefully. It’s time for someone else to appreciate them.

  9. You look well prepared to dodge the raindrops…hope the mudslides are not too serious.
Oh and such lovely roses at The Ivy and lucky you to have met Mrs. B! I would jump at the chance to meet her!!

  10. Loving the outfit. You can keep the rain though! Here in the North of England we have had enough of it!! Flooding everywhere and still it falls out if the sky. I hope you don’t get as much as us. One result of the bad weather is my wardrobe declutter and it still continues.

    1. Marilyn and Rose, yes Marilyn, but California had the opposite effect of “climate upheaval” as scientists are now calling it: dry as dust, and Rose, alas I fear your summer will be the mirror image of the Californian one. Those floods in the north of England, and the borders in the south of Scotland, have been horrific. Wish you had dykes like the Dutch.

Dark blue doesn’t suit me so much. I’ve found a few things in a very deep violet (as deep as navy) and in a dark forest green, but those colours I love are very hard to find.

  11. Here on the east coast of Australia we have the other side of El Ninõ — super dry weather in some parts of the country (with resultant bushfires and damp in our part. So much for the Aussie summer right here.

    1. Jill Ann, yes the very same. She is still very interesting and quite glam! It was delightful meeting her.

  12. Wow, I can’t imagine how early you must have had to leave to meet her. The restaurant looks lovely, and you’re boots are great! Since our remodel I have been moving boxes back into the house ever so slowly. My boxes of boots are still in the garage! We’ve had a lot of rain up in No. Cal this week and I plan to get my boots in my closet and wearing them this week-end! My Salvadore Ferragamo’s are my favorite boots to wear. They’re old and similar to the pair you have on.

I love the way you tied that scarf. A tutorial on how you tie your scarves would be great at this time of year. Hint, hint! 🙂
