Spring Ahead

Here I've styled this denim dress with an all-white base. Details at une femme d'un certain age.

Blue And White Denim

Wearing: dress/duster (Plus / Petite) | tee (similar) | necklace (c/o) | necklace |
bracelet (c/o) | bracelet | bag | jeans (Petite) | shoes

The week before we left on our ski trip was oddly warm for late January, and I’d been throwing on this dress-worn-as-duster over jeans and a tee to run errands. But I also had this look in mind, which I’d wear out to meet friends for lunch. White denim always feels so fresh to me. I went with accessories that keep the look light and springlike.

I really like the fabric on this duster. It’s a tencel/organic cotton blend and is very light and fluid.

Layered French Kande necklaces: faceted aquamarine and silver chain. Details at une femme d'un certain age.

When my friends at French Kande offered a piece from their latest collection, my first pick was this Aquamarine necklace. It’s a gorgeous color, and my birthstone! If you’re considering your first French Kande piece, I always recommend a stone necklace in a mid-length like this one. It looks great on its own or can be layered with longer or shorter necklaces. Here I’ve added a longer silver chain necklace from an earlier collection.

Cult Gaia bamboo bag and French Kande bracelets. Details at une femme d'un certain age.

The silver cuff on the bottom (gifted) is from the latest French Kande collection, “Luxembourg” and layers nicely with other bracelets. The double strand pearl bracelet is from an earlier collection, and is one I still wear several times per week.

I first saw this bag everywhere on Instagram last year, but it seemed to be perpetually sold out. It’s back in stock now. It’s a fun Going-Out bag for Spring and Summer and very lightweight. The one I’m carrying here is the Small size. Straw, raffia and bamboo bags continue to be a strong trend for spring, so if you like them you’ll have plenty of choices.

Detail: L'Amour des Pieds metallic mules. More info at une femme d'un certain age.

I bought these mules early last year, and still love them for both the funky look and comfort. I know that the frayed hem jeans aren’t to everyone’s liking, but I do like them and will continue to wear them. They’re also available here with finished hems.

  1. Sigh….This is perfect! Every detail works together to create an elegant yet casual look. The news is so sad today, but you lifted my spirits. Thoughts and prayers for Florida and our nation…

  2. Thank you for brilliant ideas, next time I see a button through shirt dress I will think outside the box and imagine a duster coat.

    Florida in my thoughts too.

  3. Thanks for the inspiration and options. I need that EF duster/dress! Also, aquamarine is my birthstone, too. Birthdays are coming.

  4. I swear I had this exact same bag when I was first out of college – many years ago now! I should have hung onto it!

  5. This is a chic look on you, Susan. I have a love, not love, relationship with dusters. On the one hand, they do look chic, as you are modeling. On the other hand, I seem to move swiftly and the length becomes cumbersome and I get tangled in it. I’ll be back to exploring the jacket options. Your new French Kande looks great–I recently picked up a new crystal one–with the spike–which I believe you have, it’s stunning in person.

  6. Hi Susan. Your new medallion appears to be a shiny yellow gold color, but when you click on the link, it shows a muted silver color. Did you order an alternate medallion? Thanks, Cece

    1. Hi Cece, no it’s the same medallion. I think it’s just the light in the photograph. It is a shinier medallion than some, though.

  7. Such an inspiration. I shopped my closet last week and pulled out stored spring and summer clothes. I’ve gravitated to dusters, tunics and flowey coats since retiring. Thanks for the stirring up new ideas.

  8. I love this outfit too. I think with the tencel material, it will be safe but if that duster were in denim, I would be very afraid it would dye the white below.

  9. Fantastic bag!!! I truly like your taste in bags–I’m so tempted though I have no need for (another) wicker/bamboo/straw clutch thing. Thanks for the great posts–keep ’em coming!

  10. This outfit looks great–very flattering and I’ll be copying it because it adds visual height!

I purchased the shoes last year, along with the red ones.
By far, the metallic shoes are the most versatile and garner the most compliments.

  11. This makes me so happy that I bought some white “cigarette” style jeans at Uniqlo the other day. Now I’m even more excited to wear them. They look very fresh!

  12. What a great spring look! I love the column of white with the darker denim and am going to try it. The light colored accessories are perfect.

For some reason I’ve never been able to adjust to dusters. As someone else mentioned, the length gets caught in my legs when I walk quickly. I’m going to try a shorter denim top, perhaps something mid-thigh.

    Thanks for another great post.

  13. Great outfit! I love the shirt dress worn as duster idea. I think it looks much better the way you’ve styled it than worn as a dress.

  14. I am a newcomer to your blog. I love it! And I love this post’s outfit. I’m excited by it because I just ordered a taupe silk/linen straight silhouette button front dress from Garnet Hill. My thinking was that it would be great for an upcoming late spring vacation, to be used as a duster as well as a dress. Thanks for giving me confidence in that idea.

  15. This is beautiful look. Sadly I have several denim dresses with just a few buttons..not all the way down. ….. Mistake.

But I do want to tell you Susan the EF Serpentine velvet jacket was so pretty. I waited and waited and it went on sale. I purchased it from Nordstrom, only to be told the next day…oops. they did not have it any longer. This happens a lot.

I decided to search and found one on Ebay. I bought it. It arrived today, fits perfectly and hardly worn. 66 bucks compared to 400 new and 234 sale. I never thought about purchashing this way but wanted the jacket so badly, I took a chance. What a joy when it arrived today in great condition. Thank you for all your tips. Fantastic.

  16. I also bought those shoes last year. I love them and wear them a lot. Soft, comfortable and quirky. Plus, arch support! Great with casual looks, but I also like how you have worn them with dressier outfits. They look as new today as when I first bought them.

  17. Hi Susan, A day late to post but here goes. Is the Cult Gaia bag easy to grasp at the handle? I’m interested in buying it from Net A Porter but have some arthritis in my thumbs and am worried I won’t be able to properly grasp the handle. Thanks so much and hope you can respond to my question.

  18. Lovely sparkling fresh outfit, Susan! The denim duster is just the right length on you. If it was any longer, it wouldn’t be as nice. I really like the way you paired shorter and longer necklaces together. Please keep offering your blog followers “instant” style ideas like these. Thanks for featuring Paul Green shoes because I always try to buy a pair when in Austria. They are so comfortable and come in great styles.

  19. Susan, is the denim duster you’re wearing a regular or petite size? If petite, it seems longer than shown in online catalog pictures but I know you’re pretty short.

    1. Hi Carol, it’s the petite. I always try to keep in mind that the models online are usually about 5’9″ or 5’10” and wearing a Misses size. For most of us the garment will be longer than shown.

        1. That whole ensemble would look super- cute with the printed orange criss-cross strap sandals from last year for a pop of color! So many options!

  20. This is a very beautiful outfit , I love the dustersnd the way it contrasts with the white. When cotton and tencel are blended I agree it is a very soft and fluid feel.
I very much like the jewelry pieces that you chose from that collection. You layered them very artfully as well.
Fabulous mules to top off the outfit. Have a great week ahead .
    ❤️❤️❤️

  21. You inspired me to buy another French Kande necklace – hope the fact that I used the link means that you get credit. Thank you!
