GNC Ultra Zinc Lozenges

This last weekend, petit monsieur had the Head Cold From Hell™.  Nose running like Niagra Falls, coughing and sneezing over every surface in the house. Despite my constant hand washing, I knew I’d probably been exposed, and exposed but good.

I don’t remember who first recommended these to me, but I’ve been using for a few years and swear by them now.  Beginning Saturday night, I took one of these every few hours.  Monday night I could feel that tickle in my throat telling me the virus was trying to take hold, but as of this morning I seem to be working through the usual cold cycle more quickly, and the severity of symptoms is greatly reduced.  I’m often able to avoid a cold entirely if I begin a regime of these lozenges at the first hint of a viral respiratory incursion.

I never travel without them either.

Edited to add: A couple of people have asked about queasiness.  The Cold-Eze lozenges did make my stomach a bit queasy but these never have.  And I do sometimes take one first thing in the morning on an empty stomach.  The flavor of these is much better too (orange) though the texture is a bit rough and chalky, not smooth like most lozenges.

  1. Thank you for this suggestion, I’m going to go to the drug store immediately and look for some. The office is full of contagen this time of year. My throat has been sore when I wake up the last few days. I’d just as soon avoid another cold.

  2. Just make sure you use zinc lozenges on a full stomach, otherwise you will have the worst stomachache you’ve ever had in your entire life! First hand knowledge on that, unfortunately.

  3. I haven’t tried these, but I swear by the Cold-Eeze lozenges, available at most drug & grocery stores. They are a zinc product also, and my pediatrician said it was ok to give to my kids too. They do hate the taste, however.

  4. I’ve tried zinc before, although not with much commitment, and I have to admit to not liking the taste. Maybe it’s time to try again — I really didn’t like being so sick last week! And I’m crossing my fingers for you that you skirt this one, it’s nasty!

  5. I love it when I find somethings that actually works! For me it were the Kaloba drops that saved my health during the winter months when I thought it was already to late to stop anything coming because the throat hurted. Sensational, isn’t it? Now you need to watch lots of FUNNY movies to boost your immunesystem and you will be safe.

  6. I’ll have to try them. I had a serious thing for Trader Joe’s zinc lozenges — I think they reminded me of St. Joseph’s chewable aspirin, which I loved as a kid — and when they were discontinued, I was bereft. I’ve never found anything else that was palatable enough to stick with for the length of time required to have an effect.

  7. I’ve been taking a Grapefruit Seed Extract pill every morning since the fall and haven’t had a cold all winter, knock on wood! I also use zinc in tablet form about once a week. Feel better!

  8. Kids and I both have low grade snuffles at the moment – this is probably just the ticket. Will go and try to find the equivalent at the pharmacy – thanks for the tip!
