Share In Style: Skirts Or Pants

Well, we know which camp I'm in...
Well, we know I bat for Team Pants…

I was delighted when fabulous Sacramento of MIS PAPELICOS invited me to partner with her for this week’s Share In Style: Skirts Or Pants!

Above is the J.Crew Regent blazer I’ve been raving about for the last couple of weeks. I think this is one of the better jacket styles they’ve offered in years. (And as of Monday Sept. 15 it’s again offered at 25% off with code SHOPFORFALL !)

Jérôme Dreyfuss bag, Tory Burch wrap bracelet

I’ve been looking for a cognac colored day bag for years now and here was trying on this one from Jérôme Dreyfuss.  As much as I love the gorgeous color, design and functionality (multiple pockets plus key fob and attached mini-flashlight!), I’m returning it. It’s not an inexpensive bag; I worry about keeping the suede looking nice, and I don’t want to have to “baby” my bags. (I have not used the bag, only tried it on here, and it still has tags on.) The search continues.

  1. I’m retired, and I spend much of my life in jeans (dark wash Jags). In the summer, being too old to parade around in shorts beyond my own garden, I wear skirts on hot days…much cooler. Now the hot days are behind us, I would wear skirts more often if I could find skirts that I liked. MN stores have been overwhelmed the maxi…been there, done that, 40 years ago. What I have seen in our store so far this fall have been either decidedly for business wear, and/or too short. Obviously our buyers are late to the trend for longer skirts that all the fashion mags are showing.
That being said, I have but two skirts for non summer wear: one black, one gray, both of the bencil variety. I wear them with tights and flat shoes (because I can’t wear heels), or oxfords, or with leggings and socks when I wear boots (coming all too soon). Because the top of me is two sizes larger than the bottom of me, I rarely wear dresses for any reason (I own only two, both of them black jersey Eileen Fisher), but I dress up my black skirt in all manner of ways .

I love the bag, and its color…too bad its not in a smooth leather…but its twice the size of any that I would us!

  2. pants !
as an old swanky broad , i feel they are more modern ..
more independant & more youthful than a skirt or dress …
when i was young , i did only skirts , dresses but no mo’ !

  3. You look great! Love those shoes!
As for your question, probably pants trump skirts for getting out of my wardrobe and onto the street, but I do wear skirts fairly often, dresses too.. In fact, today I’m wearing a white linen J. Crew v-neck with a blue-white floral-patterned jean-style skirt. So comfortable on a hot day, imo, skirts — much more so than pants.

  4. Pants, always! Even as a child my mother had a hard time getting me into a skirt or dress.

I love those shoes!! I’ve been wanting an oxblood or burgundy colour boot or shoe for this season. I seem to recall there were burgundy items everywhere a year or two ago, now I can’t find any. If I wasn’t in Canada I’d order a pair right away.

  5. I prefer dresses, especially in the summertime in Texas. I would wear dresses in the winter also, if I could find appropriate winter dresses. Since I am tall, I prefer a midi length in my dresses and skirts. EF makes this length from time to time and I am always on the lookout.

I like pants too, but I am hard to fit due to my waist/hip ratio. I do have some favorite Worthny.com pants for fall/winter. My favorite is Worth’s Frankie pant.

  6. As was said is a previous post, those EF Boyfriend Jeans were made for you!….really!… you look taller.
That jacket is also wonderful on you. I love the slightly dressier stripe of the jacket with the jeans!

  7. I think this is the best look I’ve seen on you in my browsing on your blog. Classic yet current, well-proportioned on you, just the epitome of effortless casual elegance.

I see you took the plunge on the Kirkwoods – good call because they look divine.

Totally agree with you on not having to “baby” a bag. I’ve got a number of Gucci and LV bags in my closet that date back 30+ years (ugh, can I be that old?) and despite being in constant rotation, they still look great. (Side note: I just learned that if I wanted to sell them (never!), they are all worth more than I originally paid for them. Ha! Now I can argue that they are my way of investing. 😉

Hope you can find a bag shaped and sized just like the Dreyfuss but not in suede, because the overall look is just right. 🙂

  8. Classy look! You make jeans look very chic with the elegant (yet comfy – I love that!) shoes and accessories you chose. I think I can safely state that by now, I enjoy wearing both skirts and pants equally. There were times in my life when I mostly wore dresses and skirts (back in Russia in my younger years), and times when I wore jeans and pants almost exclusively (more practical and active lifestyle in the US, always on the go, always driving). Now I came to love both skirts and pants equally for different moods, occasions etc. 🙂

  9. As I grow older, I am drawn to dresses less and less. With my 5’1″ stature, it’s hard not to look *cute* in a dress. This was ok when I was younger, but after 62 years of living, I feel a lot more badass than cute. Dresses don’t feel like “me” anymore.
Love everything about your outfit above, Femme. You look wonderful.

  10. Definitely more skirts than trousers. I wear trousers and jeans when I have to, usually if it is horribly cold or if I’m doing housework or a task that requires them. Though I confess I often wear “yoga pants” working on my computer at home, alone.

Since I’m an old boho type, skirts + opaque tights or leggings is certainly a far more common combination than sheer hose. And essential on a vintage bicycle!

Great photos; especially loved the German Swing Girl, beswingtes Fraülein.

  11. just spray the bag before using it! I have a pair of ( very expensive) dark blue suède Cloé boots and i wear them when it’s raining, when the streets are dirty, etc. They remain impeccable, thanks to my spraying every two weeks!

  12. You look very elegant and stylish in these pants. I like this look a lot. The shape of the jacket really suits you & I enjoy the array of deep colours too. The bag looks soft to touch. Really perfect. Thank you so much for commenting on my post, I appreciate it. I hope you have a wonderful week beauty xx Kizzy.

  13. The bag is really nice but if only it comes in the same color as your shoes or even the wrap bracelet (that color is gorgeous by the way) it would be perfect. This color instead is the normal oak color which is nice but nothing out of the ordinary. The blazer is TDF.. JCrew makes good blazer in my opinion. I too use more pants than skirt. |I think they go with my personality more and the comfort is just a no brainer!

  14. Not sure why, but cognac is a very hard color to get right in a bag. Mulberry has a beautiful cognac leather, and since cognac is a year round bag color in LA (or really anywhere) I think it’s worth the splurge. Of course there’s a gorgeous cognac Hermes Birkin as well 🙂

    1. KPL, I’ve loved the look of Mulberry Bayswater bags for years, but it’s a larger bag than I’m looking for. They’ve added a smaller satchel version that I’m going to check out.

  15. Great outfit! The bag looks fab, but I can agree about the maintenance. I normally wear mostly skirts, but in the winter, I will wear leggings or skinny jeans with boots. 🙂

  16. Pants, for sure. I think I look better in them than skirts, too. Those Nicholas Kirkwood shoes are AMAZING. I am a fan of his work but thought he only made the highest of high heels! I love those shoes on you and now I want a pair! XO, Jill

  17. You make it look SO easy, Sue! I would die for that jacket, but it’s out of my price range. I really need to start trolling ebay more often for a few high, high quality pieces.
I love wearing skirts or pants depending on my mood. I’ve recently acquired two pairs of Michael Kors jeans that fit me so well they run the risk of falling into heavy rotation!

  18. Great blazer (love that word!). And your shoes are so shiny and new – I love them. Too bad about the bag. I knew a man who used to scratch the paint on his new car right away so he wouldn’t worry about it. I don’t suppose that spilling something on your bag would make you feel comfortable with it…?! You’ll find something even better. Maybe in kahlua or a drink with cranberries or oxblood (?) this time. This linkup made me realize I’m in short supply of skirts; I wear pants or dresses more frequently.

  19. That’s a beautiful jacket and superb on you! Bag too heavy for me to even consider (even empty) though I like the colour. Am in pants most of time, except if temps over 85F or so, then floaty skirts or summery dress. Adore dresses but, since mostly retired, just don’t have the occasion to wear them as often.

Woman in blue skirt at bottom looks entirely at home in that; I could never wear it. That’s what’s fun about individual style.
