We’re getting deep at By Invitation Only! This month’s topic is “What’s Wrong With The World/What’s Right With The World.”
One certainly doesn’t have to look hard or far to find What’s Wrong: greed, selfishness, lack of compassion, short-sightedness, intolerance, forgetting that “there but for the grace of God go I” and that we’re all in this leaky boat together, cruelty, exploitation of the earth, willful ignorance and bigotry. The very idea that there is an “Us and Them.”
But because I firmly believe that what we focus on and give energy to is what we create more of, I’d like us all to take a few moments to focus on What’s Right. Let’s create more of this.
Kindness.
Compassion.
Pulling together in tough times. Pulling together in good times.
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you notto be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”
What’s Right With The World is that we each have the power to make a difference. We can make a difference in small or large ways, but we have the power to create more of what we want to see in the world. We can choose where we put our energy, what to feed.
I’m looking forward to seeing what the rest of the By Invitation Only bloggers have posted on this topic. Marsha at Splenderosa is hosting!

Yes, let us all looking for the good and ‘right’ things of the world in hope that the ‘wrong’ ones will disappear one day. Every one of us has some power to help, step by step, bit by bit, day by day, starting in our own house and environment.
As for “Why focus on the things that are wrong?” as Jacqueline @ Home asks: What is ‘wrong’ usually evokes pain, and without feeling pain- from a pinch to deep grief-we become too busy, too distracted or too apathetic to do the hard work of creating social change.
The quotation from Marianne Williamson should hang on the wall in every home in the world. I truly believe this, and if we could quit hiding behind fear or ridicule we would all shine a little brighter. There is so much more “right” with the world than “wrong.” If we all pulled together we would all win. Thank you for this, Susan. A brilliant & uplifting post on a very difficult subject. You are loved….
Powerful post…you nailed it! There is trouble all around me each day…it is important to take the time to enjoy the sunrise and to look deeply into each face which comes my way and find the beauty in everyone. I see so many people today eaten up by discontent, greed, judgmental attitudes and anger. How sad for them to waste one moment! You did a wonderful job with this post!
My post for our ‘By Invitation’ subject is very similar to yours Trish …. we all know that there are so many things wrong in the world today but why focus on them when there are so many positives that we should concentrate on and be grateful for ? Here’s hoping for a peaceful and beautiful 2013. XXXX
This was your best post, ever. Every year my resolution is to be a better person, and I’m still working on it, as there is much to improve. THank you for a thoughtful reminder to stay focused precisely on why this remains a resolution.
Thank you– it’s so refreshing to see others writing what I’ve been thinking. I can’t tell you how many times in the past few weeks I’ve had to reference things we learned by age 5 about how to act that seem to be forgotten (the biggest: if you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all). Slowly, I think more people are recognizing the problems, and the ones who are are leading by example to make change.
We so often underestimate our own power and we fear it as well because with power comes responsibility. To those whom much is given, much is expected. The theme of my small group discussion group last night was the beauty of simple things. Sometimes we don’t recognize the beauty in our lives.
Simply a wonderful post, Susan!

Lovely post.
There are so many wonderful quotes and positive ideas in this post! Well, I fear I am a bit out on a limb on my own for this BIO…
It is great to remember some of the small moments of 2012 that were powerful such as these. Merci!
Moving, inspirational, important.

Wonderful, important post, Susan – I appreciate reading this today and getting my head straight. And that “Joy” picture is the best!
These are glorious and poignant reminders of compassion and community.
Good Men Project (http://GoodMenProject.com) did a piece recently on heroic men. It was a very moving reminder that heroism still exists.
Good men and good women remain. “Good” – for all the senseless suffering – remains. That gives me hope.
JOY!! I think we all have an infinite well of kindness and goodness.
Excellent post.PS The David Bowie exhibition is on till July!

Seeking the good with conscious intention is crucial. Lovely post, Susan!

Deja, just saw this post, what a beauty! You made me cry, made my day. Happy New Year to you!
This is such a great post. It’s funny and powerful at the same time. I really had a great time reading this.
