Denim Crush…

So…I’m kind of in love with these jeans. The split hem seems to be a micro trend for fall, but that wasn’t what pushed me over the edge. It was that seam down the front, which IMO makes these very flattering. They do run large, so I’d recommend going down one size.

Lately I’ve been living in my white linen shirts. The one above is from last year…a couple of similar styles here and here.

Color Crush…

style blogger Susan B. models a Kenneth Cole New York wool coat from the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. Details at une femme d'un certain age.

I also wanted to show you this coat, (Plus option here) which wasn’t available in my local stores in Petites so I ordered to try. It’s a very nice topper that would be a winter coat in Southern California and probably a fall-to-late-fall coat in the Northeast. It’s also available in black and grey, though I really like this nutmeg color. The sleeves are knit, which makes them nicely fitted, but they aren’t so snug that you couldn’t wear a light layer underneath.

I’m not keeping this one as I really don’t need another winter weight coat, but I was tempted as it’s a very nice piece. What I’ve realized from trying this on is just how many more styling options a lighter weight, longer jacket in rust, “nutmeg,” or cognac would add to my wardrobe. I’m now officially On The Hunt!

The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is now open to all. There’s a lot of merchandise included so I’ve narrowed the field a bit, and you can see my picks on my Sale page HERE.

Bon weekend!

  1. The look of you in the split jeans–I have to say, in the entire time I’ve been following your blog, that outfit, hands down, is my favorite look on you!!!
I dig those jeans, but for me, the price point, even on sale is a bit high on what I want to spend–I don’t know if it is a trend or if the look is here to stay. I’ll be studying that jean to see if the price falls. It’s a great look!!!!

  2. That nutmeg colored coat caught my eye, too. I will be waiting with great anticipation for the results of your hunt. What a great color!

  3. I bought this as well & it’s so cute. Reviews said scratchy sleeves so kept it on awhile. Yes I’d need something underneath. May not keep. I live in AZ so anything scratchy or hot doesn’t work. Red raincoat (via spiga) was too small but found a Med. Online at The Rack last night. Find us a nutmeg blazer or lightweight jacket please.

  4. I don’t comment often but wanted to say the nutmeg coat/duster looks great on you. It suits you very well

  5. I’ve seen those split jeans around. Also splits on the sides. I have a couple different jeans with zippers at the ankles, which allow for unzipping for a slit. Also a pair of palazzo pants with slits. Very fun that such huge, flowing pants could also show a glimpse of leg.

  6. Hi there! The split jeans are not my thing–I don’t want to cut into the line of my already-short legs–but I love everything else you’re wearing in these shots. Shoes, jacket, linen shirt, love all.

  7. Ooo, thanks for modeling the nutmeg jacket–my size is available, yay! We are relocating to TX and I think this will do well for most of the winter (I’m currently in FL, where it would be a “no-go”.)

  8. Aren’t jeans super hot in the summer…and in southern CA to boot? I can’t even think of putting on jeans right now…pulling them up my sweaty legs…ugh!! Then the thought of walking down the sidewalks, going into the sauna that is the subway…oh I am breaking into a sweat just thinking of it. But you look really great…as you always do. But for me, this would be a fall outfit.

    1. Hi Rebecca, LA tends to be much less humid than much of the country in the summer, so even if temperatures are in the mid-80’s F, I still find jeans comfortable. I’m also near the coast, where it’s usually about 10-20 degrees F cooler than inland. Our really hot months are September and October, where we’ll often see temperatures above 100F. Even though it’s still pretty dry, on those days I’ll often forego the jeans. And thank you!

  9. Love the nutmeg coat although the double-breast makes me hesitate. I often wear coats open and DB often doesn’t drape well this way. What do you think?

    1. Margot, I worried about the double-breasted detail too, but this coat is soft and drapes nicely, so I didn’t find that to be an issue.

  10. I’d like to see you wear a slightly shorter top with the split jeans. I’m not sold on them. I can’t tell if it’s the length of the pants, or the top doesn’t quite work? It’s not bad but not a winner.

  11. I keep being really tempted by that nutmeg coat. I have been obsessed with that color off and on my Whole life and lately is one of the on times! Like Connie, I live in Arizona so if those sleeves are scratchy this might be problematic. But I suspect not so much in Tucson. And my other excuse is that I travel to the Midwest for work a few times every year, in spring and fall. Wouldn’t it be grand to have that coat for my October trip?!

  12. I utterly love the coat and the beautiful colour. The hem in the jeans is also intriguing, but I’m not sure it would flatter everyone. As for the split, I am sick of affluent people trying to look poor.

LA would be a paradise if it weren’t so car-dependent and ecocidal. I envy your temps but would never live there for that reason. It is a tragedy what has been done to one of the most beautiful places in North America…

    1. Wow, it never occurred to me that this jean design was “trying to look poor.” I just thought it was an interesting design detail. I disagree with that characterization.

As far as LA being car-dependent, it’s something that many people here are working to change. There used to be an excellent streetcar system that was bought up in the 1930’s and then demolished by a consortium controlled by General Motors. Now, the city is spending a lot of money to re-establish a light rail system and encourage bus ridership. Also on the plus side, California is taking a leadership position in combatting global warming and encouraging eco-friendly technologies such as solar power. California has the strictest emissions standards in the nation. Too many cars on the road for sure, but it’s something that most of us would like to see change.

  13. I just purchased that coat during the Nordstrom anniversary sale, and seeing it on you made my day!! Looks fabulous. And I like the split jeans – they’re sexy with heels and available at other price points.

  14. Love these looks on you. The jeans outfit is definitely one of my favorites, very contemporary and interesting. Nutmeg, along with terra cotta and copper is a color that surprisingly works well with my cool coloring, basically those with a pink undertone. It’s a color I’ve recently been integrating into my color family for some variation.

  15. Me encanta esta página, es una pena que sea en inglés! A veces no llegó a comprender todo! I love all te looks!
