4 Beauty Products You Might Want To Try - une femme d'un certain âge

Lifestyle blogger Susan B. recommends fragrance-free borage lotion for dry skin. Details at une femme d'un certain age.

Can you believe we’re at the end of August already? This year has been flying by.

Drugstore Beauty

We’re heading into a few weeks of hot, arid weather in Southern California. Even with upping my water intake, my skin gets really dry and can start looking lizard-like, as well as feeling itchy and irritated. Karen had recommended this ShiKai Borage lotion, which I was able to find at a local grocery store. It’s very soothing, non-greasy, and lasts all day. Fragrance-free too.

got2b glued styling product

Don’t let the packaging scare you…this “spiking glue” is one of the best styling products I’ve found for my fine, straight hair, and it’s a bargain! I learned about this from Melanie of Bag and a Beret. Just use a pea-sized amount, rub in your hands to warm it up, then run your fingers through your hair. It will feel a little sticky at first but dries quickly, and then you can shape or fluff for more volume. It will hold a style, but also adds lift and texture. Doesn’t look spiky unless you want it to…if so just use more product.

Style blogger Susan B. recommends Colleen Rothschild Radiant Cleansing Balm. Details at une femme d'un certain age.

The nice people at Colleen Rothschild sent me some products to try, and as some of my regular products have run out, I’ve been working them into my routine. My favorite so far is this Radiant Cleansing Balm. It comes with a muslin cleaning cloth, which I really like. I also enjoy the fragrance which I find quite soothing. After using, my skin feels clean but not stripped or dry. Colleen Rothschild products contain no parabens. Currently they’re having a promotion, 20% off sitewide with code LABORDAY.

Style blogger Susan B. recommends Makeover Workshop Firming Neck And Throat CremeMy friend Brian has a wonderful company called Makeover Workshop. He teaches makeup techniques to women all over the country, and has created his own line of makeup and skincare products. The Re-Creation Lip Treatment has been a favorite of mine for a couple of years now. A few weeks ago he gave me this Firming Neck & Throat Creme to try, and though I was skeptical, I’ve been using it daily. I have to say, I have noticed a difference. While nothing out of a jar is going to tighten my jaw line or get rid of a wattle, the skin on my neck does look smoother and less puckered. So I’m going to keep using it. Thanks, Brian!

The Japanese skincare company DHC has a couple of things that I’ve really come to like. I’ve used their “Neck Treatment Essence Peptides” and it really did make a difference with my neck. I’ve also used it on my face. Their “Deep Cleansing Oil” is a makeup remover, but I’ve used it to cleanse my face when it was painfully dry and it helped prime it for a good moisturizer. Speaking of moisturizers, their “Extra Nighttime Moisture” was my go-to for daytime use during the winters I lived in the Rocky Mountains. If you’re curious about their products (or wish to do patch tests), they’ll send you samples of almost anything they make, and I believe their US business is mostly conducted online — that’s where I found them.

Ah, the battle with fine hair…it is one that I have been waging throughout my entire life. I’ve tried that spike gel and found it to work very well, but you are right, a little goes a long way. Might I recommend a shampoo/conditioner? I recently began using the Matrix Oil Wonders Volume Rose, and found it to work wonders both on texture and volume. It seems somewhat counter-intuitive to use an oil-containing product on fine hair, but it’s great (at least for my aging fine hair).

I don’t know if you find this to be true, but it seems that for me a product will work well for some time and then just stop being effective. I’m guessing this simply occurs because as I age my hair is aging, too. So for now I’m enjoying my Volume Rose success while it lasts!

I find with hair products that my hair gets tired of them after a while but it seems to be ok if I rotate my favourites !

Recently, a commenter on (I think?) Alyson’s “That’s Not My Age” blog recommended a moisturizer called E45, which I ordered off Amazon:

It’s super as a body moisturizer, better than anything I’ve used recently. And I’ve even used it occasionally for a night face cream when I’m too tired or lazy to do the whole night-time routine.

    That’s all I got. 🙂

I have discovered pure emu oil and use it on top of my moisturizer. It improves on anything I put on my face. It absorbs quickly and leaves me hydrated.

I also have started using RMS living luminizer. A tiny amount on the top of the cheekbones, brow bones and the bridge of my nose gives a very subtle, healthy glow. It is not sparkly at all. The first day I used it my hairdresser said my skin looked great. A little goes a long way,

I love Josie Maran’s argan oil Her cream is amazingly terrific on my very dry skin and I love the scent. Not overwhelming – I am currently using the unscented version. I tried the oil on my hair – it is thick and fine, but it was too heavy. I need to try Got2B!

Just adding a big *Amen!* to the recommendation for ShiKai Borage Therapy Advanced Formula lotion. I live in the desert Southwest and it is the only body lotion I’ve ever found that truly keeps my skin hydrated all day. Soaks in fast and the lack of fragrance is a huge plus. It’s pricier than other drugstore/grocery brands, but a bargain by any other standard. (Note: the regular formula is too light for me, but might work well for people who don’t need such hardcore hydration.) Even my husband is a convert. They make a great, unscented hand lotion, too.

Thank you for the tip on the spiking glue! I saw it but thought it was not for me until your post…got a cut yesterday ( just moved, looking for a new stylist, having hair angst…) and stopped on the way home to pick up the product. WOW…love it, and with baby fine hair in a pixie cut this makes it look great. Have a great Labor Day Weekend!
