5 Easy Fall Outfits with Corduroy Pants - une femme d'un certain âge

1 Pair Of Pants, 5 Easy Fall Outfits 🍂

Even though we’ve been mostly staying close to home the past several months, I still like to get up and get dressed. It helps me to feel “present and accounted for.”

But anything too elaborate or overdone just feels out of place now. I’m not walking between the tents at Fashion Week, I’m walking the dog, walking to the market, walking to the post office. Comfort is key, but I still like to look put-together.

I love corduroy for fall, and these pants are the perfect color. They work with so many other pieces in my wardrobe! So I thought it might be fun to use them as a starting point to create some fall outfits. It’s a great illustration of how working from my palette allows me to create a cohesive wardrobe with color.

(I’ve joined some of my favorite Over 50 bloggers in a roundup of Fall fashion and outfit ideas. Be sure to check out the links at the bottom of this post!)

When the calendar says Fall, but it still feels like Summer…

Susan B. wears a yellow cotton top, brown corduroy pants, and leopard print sandals. Details at une femme d'un certain age.

Fall in Southern California can fluctuate between cool-to-mild and hot, dry days. So for those warmer days, I’ve styled the cords here with a lightweight cotton top and some fun leopard print sandals. The corduroy fabric is light enough to be comfortable even in the heat.

I’m wearing size Small in the top, size Petite 28 in the pants.

When it starts cooling off…

Susan B. wears brown corduroy pants, a puffer vest, blue tee and white sneakers. Details at une femme d'un certain age.

For those early morning dog walks when it’s cool, but not quite cool enough for a jacket.

I’m wearing size Petite Small in the tee, size M in the vest, and size Petite 28 in the pants.

Susan B. wears brown straight leg corduroy pants, a striped tee, utility jacket and leopard sneakers. Details at une femme d'un certain age.

Another option for cool-morning-warm-afternoon days…

Wearing size Petite Small in the jacket, size Small in the tee, size Petite 28 in the pants.

Zoom meetings, or a sidewalk coffee date…

Susan B. wears a red cardigan, leopard print tank, brown corduroy pants and gold wedge sandals. Details at une femme d'un certain age.

Earrings | Cardigan | Necklace | Top | Bracelet | Pants | Sandals

We’re often still in sandals well into October. On a cooler day, I could sub out my metallic sneakers.

Wearing size Petite Small in the sweater, size 0 in the tank, size Petite 28 in the pants.

When the weather turn brisk…

Susan B. wears a red quilted jacket, silk scarf, brown corduroy pants and brown ankle boots. Details at une femme d'un certain age.

Earrings | Scarf | Jacket | Sweater (similar) | Pants | Boots

This bright quilted jacket is made from recycled plastic! It’s quite light and very warm.

Wearing size Petite Small in the jacket, Petite Medium in the sweater, and Petite 28 in the pants.

You look so put together and stylish. I look like a bag lady on the morning dog walk.

Oh, this made me laugh! Here I thought I was really upping my game with my colorful rubber “dog walking booties” from Joules.

White vests and outerwear are my Winter mainstays. I have a puffer, a fleece and a fake fur. I’ve been looking for a knitted sweater vest. Daylight savings will be starting soon and I like something white to put on while walking with or without the dog in our sidewalkless neighborhood.

That sounds very sensible! I love knit sweater vests in general and I think they are very flattering. Sadly, they seem to have gone out of style….

Love the outfits! You just radiate confidence (which is really high on my style list). I was using leopard print to accessorize, shoes and scarves, however, I read a post by Cindy Hattersley & she had a great leopard print sweater blazer. I was in love! I wanted to try a sweater blazer, I bought a that sweater at J. Crew at a great price. It is now a staple in my fall wardrobe. Can’t wait to read the other blogs; thanks so much, I just love your blog!

For the last week or so, I have not been receiving e-mail notifications when you have a new post. I tried to resubscribe, but received a message that my email is already subscribed to your site. Thought you might want to check on your end, as others may be experiencing the same thing.

You’ve pot together some great outfits using style and color to welcome Fall. I live in southern Missouri and our temps fluctuate a lot here this time of year, too. It’s so refreshing to be able to start wearing Fall clothing because this is my favorite season!

Every single one of these outfits is just terrific. More importantly, they are each just terrific on you! I don’t know if it’s because you had your colours done or what, but each one of these looks just great. I’m going to run upstairs to my closet and see how much I can copy! Thanks.

Also, what size are you wearing in the off white puffer vest, please?
I’m too scared of Covid to go to the stores and try on clothes, so it would really help if you would consider mentioning your sizes. 50 is Not Old blog does it and it’s very helpful.

          October 1, 2020 / 2:50 pm

Hi Trey, thanks so much. I’m wearing a Petite Small in the tee, a Medium in the puffer vest, and a Petite 28 in the corduroy pants. I’ll update all of the sizing information in the blog post shortly.

You just sparkle in each outfit, Susan! The Red Leopard session has really paid off for you. These outfit ideas are a big help right now as we bounce from beaching (no kidding- in a bathing suit last weekend here in Canada) to cashmere sweater & turtleneck today.
Thank you for including these fellow bloggers. Yours is the first blog I started to follow (because we’re the same age) and it’s been interesting to watch your transition with colours and with styles. I also follow Susanafter60.com & she did a similar post, Styling Classic Basics For Fall, on Sept 24.
Funny thing…since Covid I can’t stand wearing black & I’m a winter who has always enjoyed wearing black. Hmm…maybe I’m a Blue Spring?

      October 3, 2020 / 1:31 pm

Thanks very much, Elizabeth! I think we go through phases with color preferences. But it’s been great to find my best colors, and play with those.

  11. October 1, 2020 / 8:10 am

I have said this a million times but you are my guru when it comes to color. I need to be more creative! Both you and Mary Ann look ten years younger in those vibrant colors. I just love your new look. Oh and that red jacket looks fabulous on you! Thanks again for joining us. We really worked it to get in two posts in two days whew!!

Your new look seems to really be a happy choice. I’m so glad you have found the colors that make you glow. Especially in these stressful times. And I want to thank you for introducing Cindy Hattersley to my world. Her style and colors are so like mine. I enjoy reading both of your blogs.

I really love that striped tee. You had a similar one from Madewell and I missed out on it. Regretted that every time you featured it, which was frequently. The Everlane one is more reasonably priced, so I’ve got a second chance!

Love all the outfits except one with the turquoise top. All the other outfits harmonize so well, That one seems a bit jarring by comparison. (How would it look with that dark green sweater so many of us loved? Perfect color for fall — I refuse to believe that it isn’t in your color pallet. It is one of my favorite photos of you.)

    • Jill Ann
      October 1, 2020 / 12:01 pm

Agree about the turquoise top outfit. Turquoise is my favorite color, but I’m just not liking it with those pants. Really like the white jacket and red cardigan outfits though.

    • Susan Blakey
      October 3, 2020 / 1:28 pm

Thanks, Lyn! It’s funny, the turquoise top outfit was one of my favorites. The dark green sweater was given to a friend with more winter coloring. Though it’s a lovely color, compared to those in my Spring palette, it made me look drained.

Love these outfits! So different & so Fall! Thank you for posting! I have a similar pair of pants so I want to see what I can come up with! We’re @ 97 degrees today… fires burning 20 miles north of me…

This is so fun how you took us through the different weather options! You look lovely in all of them! The outfit with the off white jacket, striped tee and leopard sneakers…I would wear everyday here in San Francisco!! Thanks for do ing this with us, Susan!

I love this type of post where you show many ways to wear one thing. I’m wondering how you transitioned to these warm colors. I had a cool color wardrobe and now realize I’m a soft autumn. I was always drawn to warm colors more. Did you wear your old colors mixed with new ones or make a clean break?

    • Susan Blakey
      October 3, 2020 / 1:23 pm

Hi Eve, thanks! I mostly made a clean break. Cleared out almost everything that wasn’t in my palette, and have been rebuilding my wardrobe since. I did keep a few items that I love but aren’t in my colors until I can find suitable replacements for them.

    October 1, 2020 / 11:54 am

Love the outfits! Even if we’re not the same color palette as you, the concept works nonetheless.

I can’t find the inseam measurements for the corduroys. Do you know them? I often order petites when I want true ankle-length. Thx!

    • Susan Blakey
      October 3, 2020 / 1:21 pm

Hi Lee, thanks! I’m wearing a 6 Petite and the inseam is 25″.

  21. October 1, 2020 / 12:23 pm

You did an excellent job to get the most out of these trousers. A+

You look so pretty in all those colors. We are roughly the same size. Would you please tell me what size are you wearing in the LL Bean tee (turquoise) and the pants? Thx much

Love the tomato red with the warm browns! I love looking at your colors. Just a suggestion for puffer coats and vests for some ladies that feel overwhelmed in them, find
the ones that have a vee pattern instead of across, makes you less wide.

I don’t want to be negative but I’m finding the background of the bed with the saggy dust ruffle distracting when looking at your lively outfits. It takes away from your fresh look. Bedroom refresh?

  27. October 1, 2020 / 8:41 pm

I love corduroy for fall and winter and I love the colour of those pants! They would fit right into my closet.

  28. Claudia
    October 2, 2020 / 6:20 am

Have trousers a similar color and never thought to pair them with red or turquoise, always brown or cream and always felt rather dull in them. Thanks for opening up so many more options!
    p.s. I didn’t even notice the bed behind you…..

For some reason, I still can’t get the white jacket link to come up. Maybe it’s because I’m in Canada . Could you please tell me what brand it is? Thank you.

      It’s Banana Republic.
