Happy Feet – Travel Edition
For those interested in the Mephisto sandals I purchased in Venice, they’re available online here.
The ECCO Mary Janes that worked so well and carried me through days and evenings are those above. (On sale, too!)
While both are, admittedly, on the Sturdy Gal side of the style spectrum (perhaps with a nod toward Artsy Cousin?), both are exceptionally comfortable and supportive, perfect for those days that include hours of wandering through art museums, Roman ruins, wineries, cathedrals or just in circles trying to find Harry’s Bar.

Isn’t it amazing how *important* the feet become when traveling? These are two very nice-looking options (no puffy white sneakers for me)that would be perfect for New York City. Thanks for sharing!
i like both choices. I just posted about my packing list and, believe me, my shoes are ugly–including SAS sandals and crocs. But Mr FS and I love to walk and often clock more than 10 mile days–so comfort outweighs aesthetics.
Many Parisians wear shoes like the eccos–they walk a lot too,
It’s great to see that you had such a lovely trip to Europe!
I have an admittedly off-topic question, prompted by your earlier posts about Eric Bompard. The Eric Bompard cashmere sale is approaching. How do its sizes compare to American sizing?
Those Mephisto sandals are my favourite and I love the neutral shade…they will go with everything.
I used to have a pair of Ecco shoes and found them to be immensely comfortable and great for walking great distances.
Josef Siebel shoes have been high on my radar lately and I currently own 3 pairs!
Hope that you enjoy the weekend.
Thank you Pseu! And even the Grandes Dames go sturdy to walk through Venice.
A visiting friend just bought Naot sandals and I have them too, the cork bed is less conspicuous than Birkenstocks, the styling hipper. I sacrifice style for comfort when trekking cities and would still never appear in crocs. Or a Tilley hat.
One of the reasons why I don’t travel much anymore is that I can’t find decent shoes that I can wear all day that won’t cut my feet or give me blisters.
In my mind I’m all grand dame, but my feet are sturdy gal and they need sturdy shoes!
I like both of your suggestions.
I’ve had a pair like those ECCO Mary Janes before. They are super comfortable when doing a lot of walking.
Too bad comfort and high style don’t seem to go together!
Oh Roman ruins require sturdy shoes, that’s for sure.
Oh Roman ruins require sturdy shoes, that’s for sure.
I have to admit, style-wise they do not appeal to me. Comfort is another story and the idea of walking and wandering on anything not super supportive and comfortable is not an option. My 3 month trek through Europe was made in lace up all leather Bass Weejums. They were awesome.
While I like Mephisto shoes, they are cut really narrow for my wide foot. I found the Think! Julia sandals to be just as comfortable and much more stylish. They come in many different colors and are extremely comfortable due to the cork insole. This shoe is suprisingly versatile. All Think! Julia’s are built on the same footbed.

I hope you like it as much as I do.

Patti – oh yes, absolutely! There’s nothing like limping around with blisters or aching feet to ruin a vacation. Have a great time in NY!!
California Girl – Bass Weejuns…they’re a classic!
frugalscholar – when you put in that kind of mileage, comfort is the primary consideration!
Christy – thank you! I’ll tell you what, I’ll address your question in a post early next week, as the short answer is…it’s complicated.
😉
hostess – thanks, they are the most unbelievably comfortable sandals. I’ve never had a sandal before with this kind of arch support. I had a pair of Siebel shoes a few years ago and loved them. Nordstrom used to carry them in our local store, but don’t seem to anymore.
SheWhoAccessorizesWell – love your handle! I’m a big fan of Think! shoes but don’t have any of their sandals yet.
LPC – you’re welcome. Your archetypes are so brilliant and evocative!
Duchesse – I love the look of Naot sandals but have never tried them.
Belle – See LPC’s comment above. You’ll be in good company with Sturdy feet.
Ann – they’re certainly comfortable, and stylewise aren’t as bad as some I’ve seen…with jeans they look like ballerina flats.
Bourbon & Pearls – not to mention all of the cobblestone streets!
love the sandals…easy to take on travel…
I love the sandals!
I get serious about foot comfort when I am a tourist. My Mephisto fisherman sandals have taken me everywhere. They are not nearly as stylish as Deja Pseu’s Mephisto’s, but give the most support of any sandal I’ve ever worn.
You can see them here:

Comfort trumps style when traveling. It seems foolish to sacrifice your feet in the name of style.

I could have done with a pair of these on my shopping trip to New York
