Sunday Music Corner
If you’ve never seen the movie, “The Committments,” time to add to your Netflix queue. This quirky movie about a struggling Irish band that plays the music of Motown is one of the best studies ever of personal dynamics within a group of performers I’ve ever seen. And the musical numbers kick some serious arse.

I loved this movie- I have fond memories of seeing it with my friends when i was at uni. Which you’d call college.
A favourite of mine also, and I play the soundtrack regularly — great for running! Also love Roddy Doyle’s writing. Thanks for the Sunday music enorphins, Pseu!
Great flick..
That’s a perfect movie…I love every second of it.
I never saw that film. I will netflix it.
Happy, happy anniversary ma chere.
I’ve never seen this movie, will definitely have to change that. Thanks for the tip.
Bon dimanche,
Mimi
I saw this when I was in graduate school–my favorite scene was the montage where each musician is asked “what are your influences?”
Yes! Loved this movie and “Mustang Sally” was the best song! Roddy Doyle is one of my favorite Irish authors. I guess I’m a bit of an Eire O’ Phile.
endorphins . . . but you probably knew that’s what I meant!
Great movie! Chain of Fools is definitely on my playlist!!
Excellent choice! I love this movie.
(pardon my soul music geekery…but there’s no Motown in the picture, lots of Stax and Atlantic.)
Loved this movie, and love the music in it. Have watched it a number of times.
My fave line is “The Irish are the blacks of Europe”–also the fave of all the Irish-American people I know.
Thanks for the reminder – I think my music-loving 9-year-old would love The Commitments! Excellent excuse for me to see it again.
I also loved this when at uni!!
Thanks for trousers tip too, specially as Audrey is the aim xx
I think this is one of the films I watched for my ethnographic film study class my freshman year of college! Loved it!
Outspan has an Oscar now.
Why not round out the Roddy Doyle trilogy and rent The Van and The Snapper as well. Not musical, but good films.
Ah, but I loved this film . . .
