Aid for Haiti

Unless you’ve been outside the reach of the news lately, you’ve seen the pictures and heard the stories, and are probably well aware of the horrendous situation in Haiti. There are several great organizations providing aid right now, and who need your help. One of those is UNICEF. Click here to donate, and be sure to find out if your employer is matching donations.

  1. I’ve donated to Doctors Without Borders (Medecins Sans Frontieres).
The devastation is so incredible, it’s just heartbreaking to see the images. I’ve a number of posts from people who would like to go there to help, but none of the websites (RedCross, etc.) has anything about that. It would be good if they would address that issue, even if it’s to let people know they don’t want volunteers. Maybe later it would be possible for Habitat for Humanity volunteers to help with the rebuilding after the immediate needs are taken care of.

  2. You can donate $10 to red cross by texting “Haiti” to 90999. They were only allowing you to do this 2 times earlier, but are now allowing you to donate up to three times. I wish they would allow unlimited donations because I would love to have my account backlog go to a good cause rather than the dang phone company.

  3. I am heartened by the number of agencies and opportunities, and would like to add Help the Aged. We have a “foster gran” in Haiti through this organization and of course are wondering how he is.

It’s a very responsible charity dedicated to aid to indigent elders.

  4. I know that my country´s Red Cross has sent their first people this week to Haiti and an airplane might already be on it´s way with removable/tent hospitals. Aid is on it´s way, but I have understood, that the situation in Haiti is so very difficult. Where to start, when not even known exactly how largely the earthquake has damaged everything. I believe in supporting the local Red Cross, is everything we can do at the moment, since no further requests have been made. The whole situation is just so very chaotic.

  5. Matching donations help a lot! People should always check for that.

I keep coming across people who are doing clothing drives. I know that makes them feel useful, but how do they think the clothes are going to get there, be stored and then distributed? Impossible.

  6. Wendy, there is at least one organization the is accepting clothing donations, I saw it on the Huffington Post. And it’s a good thing for those who can’t afford to give cash, to give something.
