Another bride, another groom…

The Bride Wore Pucci

This month’s By Invitation Only theme is “Weddings.”  If I could write the script for the kind of wedding I’d love to attend, it would go something like this:

You were BF’s back in college, and somehow have managed to touch base and catch up with each other’s lives every few years since (now much aided by Social Media, thank you Internet!). She’d been married briefly in her early 30’s, and in the years since had seemed to be content building a career and traveling the world. Oh yes, and refurbishing the country house on 5 acres she’d picked up for “a song” during one of the real estate market troughs in the late 90’s.

So you were a bit surprised and pleased to receive her handwritten note inviting you to a wedding in her garden on the second Saturday in June. (The last time you spoke, 6 months ago, she hadn’t mentioned any serious relationships on the horizon, so this comes as a bit of a surprise.) You immediately text her to set up a video chat to get more details.

His name is Hervé, and they met skiing in Gstaad. He’s a “few” (cough) years younger, and writes apps. For skiers and snowboarders. Apparently does quite well with this. She says her aunts think this is a green card marriage, but her laugh and the twinkle in her eye tell me otherwise. The dress code will be “stylish casual” and it will probably be warm in the afternoon, though shade tents will be set up. Her Cavalier, Austin (named after her hometown) will be ring bearer. “Most everything else we’ll play by ear,” she says. “Oh, and we’re not having attendants, but we’ll be taking pictures with everyone, so…”

Summer Garden Wedding

A lightweight and easy fitting dress is called for, something with color, and some wedge sandals to avoid sinking heels into the lawn. Minimal jewelry. As she promised, it’s a laid back affair, with the bride in a shift dress that appears to be vintage Pucci, the groom, quite handsome in a slightly disheveled way in khakis and a white linen shirt. The couple seem absolutely smitten with each other. Austin performs admirably; no rings are dropped or swallowed.

The champagne flows before, during and after the brief ceremony. The toasts are lighthearted yet heartfelt. The food is light, delicious and refreshing, and features an eclectic mix of tapas, salads, and a make-your-own-tacos bar. Instead of a cake, there are a dozen fresh berry pies, and homemade vanilla ice cream.

Just as dusk begins to fall, the band sets up. Shoes are kicked off, and citronella candles lit. You forgot to bring a wrap, but grab your trusty denim jacket from the trunk of car as the temperature drops. But you don’t wear it for long, once the dancing begins. And goes until the wee hours. That comes as no surprise, because…

  1. Such fun, Sue! And fabulous outfits! Now that jet lag’s almost conquered, we’re starting to think Nuptials around here, getting ready for our son’s wedding at the end of August. Not sure what he’d think about having the Nick Lowe on the playlist, but it got my morning rocking. . .

  2. The bride wore Pucci. You had me with this!! Such a wonderful & probable story about the meeting in Gstaad with the younger man, etc. Only thing missing is Ricky Nelson’s song “Garden Party,” my dear friend. So so so happy you are with us for “By Invitation Only,” every one of us is completely different and add our own special facet to the group. Sending a big hug….

  3. Great story, great dresses! Those dresses make me feel sorry for the color-phobic among us, who would rather dress in beige and black rather than these beautiful, happy colors. And I love the video, I’ve never heard that song and it made me want to dance!

  4. Delightful, that BV dress is stupendous. Not sure I would have the courage to put a jean jacket over it but love the audacity. Feel like I was there!

  5. Pseu, these are great and really fun to read! You’ve created quite a niche here with your writing coupled with sumptuous pictures – it’s like a “graphic novel” :)!

  6. That was inspired! Fun story, great ending.

Had to watch more Nick Lowe music vids after that.

  7. I have the biggest smile on my face after reading your post! I loved all of it–the ambiance was so fresh I could practically taste the tacos!!!
PS. Doesn’t the girl in the video remind you of Geena Davis in “The Accidental Tourist”?

  8. Great outfits, and glad that you chose the jean jacket to put over the BV dress for evening – great looks, both the bride and yours.

  9. I loved everything about this – Herve … LOL. The boogying grammas in the video made me giggle. Fun, fun post.
