Be Still, Mon Coeur

It’s that time of year when une femme’s fancy turns to thoughts of jackets. So all week, while we’re sweltering in midwest end-of-summer heat (and humidity), I’ll be sharing some of my favorites so far for fall.

I’m seriously, seriously tempted by this Lafayette 148 burnt orange tweed.

The one thing that holds me back, (aside from the price tag and my current semi-moratorium* on new clothing) is that in taking closet inventory last week, I acknowledged that I am well stocked with cropped and swing jackets, and if I invest in any this fall, they will be of the longer variety.

Longer, you say?Is it warm in here, or is it me?

*more about this later.

  1. I like both jackets and find the top one more wearable; the bottom is like a European winter coat. And that lambskin skirt! When a leather skirt is this refined and gorgeous, it’s endlessly versatile. I would love to find this long enough for me.

  2. I like long jackets in theory but when I put them on I always feel a little like Maude(you know, the 70’s tv show with Bea Arthur).

  3. I´d go for the long one, since you already have many jackets. Don´t know how cold it is out there in the winter, but a long coat with boots and a great bag-that´s all you need. Surely there are lighter versions too.

  4. LBR – I think if you go more structured, you can avoid the Bea Arthur trap.

materfamilias – ochre is one of my good colors, but the combination of boxy fit and horizontal stripes would probably be a disater on short me. Still, it’s a lovely piece.

duchesse – you’re right, the top one is more wearable, and I wasn’t looking for something quite as long as the second one, but I just thought it was so stunning I had to share. And yes, that skirt is pretty damn tempting as well!

metscan – I probably would only have a handful of times in any given year I could actually wear that longer jacket, but maybe some of you who live in colder climates, well I’ll have to live vicariously through you.

anne – we still have months of warmer weather ahead of us in LA as well, but a girl can dream.

  5. I’m so late with my comments, but I just had to say I tried on both the jacket and the ombre coat. I had to be dragged away from buying both by reminding myself that the mortgage must be paid and the dogs must have all their shots and physicals.

I am so glad I was not the only one tempted! And I have to add that the ombre coat did make me look shorter and dumpier.

On the positive side, rumours abound that the designer of Lafayette 148 may be coming out with a less pricely line…
