Be the sound of higher love today…

I was sorry to hear of Donna Summer’s passing. I was mostly indifferent to her breathy, moaning disco hits from a musical standpoint (though I did enjoy dancing to them back in the day), but I’ll never forget the first time I heard this song. It gave me goosebumps and still does. This is one of those rare instances where I like the cover of a song as well as the original (by Jon Anderson and Vangelis). I’m not a religious person, but this song touches the spiritual part of me, the part that says we’re all connected in some way.

A co-worker was telling me that in the last few decades Donna Summer had many struggles with substance abuse, and conflicts with her faith vs. the sexy disco diva image that put her on the map, and was never able to get any traction with performing the kind of music that she wanted to. That’s sad. It’s a certain kind of hell, I guess when your inner and outer selves are in conflict. I hope she’s at peace now.

  1. I loved her music, I used to play it when I was getting ready to go out as a teenager. Oh that conflict you talk of would be unbearable, people can either take me or leave me.

  2. She gave me many fun moments of singing and dancing in my apartment!! I wasn’t familiar with this song…thanks for the introduction. It is sad to see so many of the people I enjoyed in my life begin to pass away…Dick Clark was a very sad moment.

  3. I remember this song! One of the many that I loved by Donna Summer. I was a disco queen, so ‘Love to Love You Baby” the long version, was one of my favorites. Thank you for this tribute to a very talented woman. And yes, I believe that we are all connected, which is comforting in so many ways.

  4. Thanks for sharing such moving thoughts and observations. As an ex-teenage disco queen who loved Donna Summer, I was sorry to hear of her death, though I didn’t know about her struggles. I, too, hope she’s at peace now.

  5. I never liked her disco stuff at the time, but the other day Terri Gross replayed an interview with her from a couple of years ago on Fresh Air. She played the famous songs, and I was struck with how striking her voice really was. Also, she sounded interesting. The interview was done in connection with the release of her bio, so I might check it out.
