The Best Cotton Sweaters & Wool-Free Knits for Fall
It’s not quite sweater weather yet, but I can see it from here. We’ve finally had a break in the heat, just enough to start thinking about fall sweaters. Many of you have asked for wool-free options, and now is the perfect time to shop, as retailers typically have the best selection. For this roundup, I’ve focused primarily on cotton sweaters and cotton blends, along with a few other wool-free options. They’re more breathable than many synthetic fabrics, and they also tend to hold up better over time.
Why choose wool-free sweaters?
Some people are allergic to wool or other animal fibers and want to avoid a reaction. Others have sensitive skin and find that even the softest wool or cashmere feels itchy or uncomfortable. And for some, choosing wool-free sweaters aligns with a preference for avoiding animal products altogether.
Personally, I find that cotton and linen sweaters are ideal for mild fall days and fluctuating temperatures. They provide just enough warmth without feeling heavy or overheating, making them a practical choice for much of the season.

This teal sweater from Eileen Fisher is a linen-cotton blend, which is very lightweight and breathable. The linen in the mix adds a bit of fluidity and drape. It’s also available in a Petunia color, a purple that can work for both Winters and most Summers. And it’s currently on sale!

Yes, it’s a splurge, but I’ve had mine for 6 years, and it still looks almost new. I wash in the machine (cold water, gentle cycle, in a lingerie bag), and dry flat. It’s available in two other neutral colors. The fit is relaxed and roomy; I take XS.
Quince Cotton Fisherman Sweater – $42
Here’s a similar style in a budget-friendlier version. Though it has a less refined feel than the one above, it is available in loads of colors. It’s been a while since I’ve tried this one, but I recall that runs smaller than the Jenni Kayne version.
Banana Republic Cotton-Silk V-Neck – $120
The silk in the mix gives this knit a very refined look and feel. It’s also washable. This style is available in five colors, sizes XXS to XXL. (Go with your usual size for a slim fit; size up if you prefer relaxed.)
There’s also a crewneck version. (Winters, check out the Tawny Port Red color…)
Lands’ End Cotton Rugby Shirt – $94.95
Rugby shirts are everywhere this season. The woven collar on this one adds structure and polish. I like this smaller stripe, but Winters should also take a look at the solid Aster Pink. In Regular, Petite, and Plus sizes.

Madewell Cotton Crewneck – $98
This relaxed fit sweater is available in a few colors, but because I so often hear that Winter palette colors are hard to find this time of year, I wanted to show you this pretty blue. (Blue Springs and most Summers can probably wear as well.) According to reviews, it runs large, so I’d suggest sizing down.
Eileen Fisher Bateau Neck Top – $228
This lightweight sweater is a blend of Peruvian cotton and TENCEL, which gives it softness and drape without sacrificing breathability. Autumns, take note: this “Sailor Blue” color is close to your Marine Navy. Also available in two Winter colors: Purple Carrot (Damson) and Infinity (Indigo). Sizes XXS-3X.
Madewell Pointelle Short-Sleeve Sweater – $78
The styling ease of a tee, but with a more refined look. Layers beautifully under jackets and most cardigans. This pale blue color is great for you Summers; 3 other colors available in sizes XX-Small to X-Large. They run a bit small, so I’d suggest sizing up if you’re in-between sizes or want a more relaxed fit.
The Best Cotton Cardigans
I purchased this budget-friendly Quince cotton cardigan in early spring, and it was in frequent rotation until late June. I’ve washed it a few times and it’s held up very well. It’s easy to style, and I’ve worn it both as a top as above and open as a top layer. I’m thinking about adding a second color.

Here’s another one that can work as either a top or jacket alternative. I think this soft green could work for most Autumns. It’s also offered in a pink stripe and maroon. My experience with Boden knitwear is that it runs true-to-size.
J.Crew Rollneck Cardigan – $118
Forgive the yucky dressing room lighting here, but I only yesterday had the opportunity to try this on in the store. I think they must have put the models in the smallest size available, but the fit is not as shrunken as it appears online. I’m wearing my usual size Small here and it’s a perfect fit. Go with your usual size, or size up if you want a more relaxed fit. This true navy can work for most seasonal palettes, and there are several other colors available, sizes XX-Small to 3X.

Lands’ End Milano Cotton Cardigan – $56.97
For a more refined look, here’s a fine-gauge 100% cotton cardigan that’s available in several colors (solids and stripes). A nice blend of soft and structured, it’s available in Regular, Petite, and Plus sizes, and runs true-to-size.
Halogen Classic Cable Knit Cardigan – $69
Cable knits are timeless, and can be an easy way to add some texture to your outfits without the bulk. This one is available in several colors (some on sale).
Make it a set with the matching shell.
Frank & Eileen Cotton Terry Cardigan – $288
It doesn’t get much softer than cotton terry, and this one has a luxurious feel. It runs true-to-size, and is available in several colors. This Pine green is a good one for Winters and Blue Autumns.
Varley Tweed Cotton Cardigan – $168
And when the occasion calls for something a bit more dressed up, here’s one in a sophisticated tweed effect knit. Yes, it’s 100% cotton! In sizes XXS-XL. (I find this brand often runs a bit large, so I suggest sizing down.)
